Lessio has had good camps before, his game just hasn't translated once the season starts. But then again, he hasn't been on a team as solid as the Kings yet so who knows. I thought he was very good the times I saw him, one of the better players on the ice.

Fwiw, Brown already has 1 goal in preseason and had a good goal waived off last night. He absolutely is playing simpler, so while it's a downer seeing him without the C, there's a chance it will jumpstart him. I think it's a bigger deal for fans than it is in the room.

I bet both Budaj and LoVerde get claimed.

McNabb Doughty
Muzzin Gilbert
Forbort Martinez

LaDue

With Gilbert and LaDue rotating as LaDue get accustomed to the NHL.

I think Something like this would be very good. I've liked what I've seen from LaDue so far this pre-season. Will never happen, but it'd be nice.

Gotta believe Gilbert, Forbort and Greene make it. Gilbert makes over a 1 mil, has played well, Forbort has to clear waivers, and Greene has been popular for years with Lombardi and co.

They will send down Scuderi, Trotman and Gravel.

Yeah for better or for worse I don't see a world where both Greene AND Scuderi get sent down. Even if Greene is #7.

Greene's not getting sent down after breaking a guy in half. Lombardi doesn't have anyone that's willing to deliver that message.

What's the context for this? I haven't caught much of anything this pre-season except what I read from here haha.

Greene wont get sent down because: (1) Sutter loves to play the veterans; (2) he is a big part of the leadership group; (3) his play is still good enough for the bottom pairing; and (4) we don't have any other gritty defenseman in our lineup. I am okay with him in the opening lineup for these reasons, but there should be a short leash on him. If his play drops off, we should send him down to the AHL or put him as the 7th defenseman. Gilbert has played well enough and is a veteran, so I expect him in the opening lineup as well.

As for Scuderi, he is done as a defenseman in the NHL. He should be sent down opening night.

With respect to the young defenseman, I would rank them in the following order from what I saw this preseason: (1) LaDue; (2) Fobert; (3) Gravel; and (4) Trotman. Trotman looked really bad in yesterday's game. Fobert/Gravel looked solid, but did not blow my mind away.

LaDue was on a whole different level in my opinion. Played high minutes, very composed, patient with the puck, good with his break out passes and zone entry. I don't expect him in the opening lineup, but if things go south fast, I hope Sutter/DL give him a call up. I understand that he is still young and they don't want to stunt his growth, but the maturity level he showed seems to make him the exception to this rule.

Well LaDue is a pleasant surprise, considering I thought Forbort/Gravel were the only Dmen close to breaking into the league. It also helps LaDue is a right hander (I think?).

The D is just so screwed. I think DS will have to settle for this:
Doughty-Muzzin
Gilbert-McNabb
Greene-Martinez
Forbort

The problem is no matter what he does there is no legit second pair without severely weakening the top pair (putting McNabb up there).
With this you have a outstanding top pair and two bottom pairs which of course will allow DS to run Doughty and Muzzin into the ground. LaDue can move up if Gilbert falters.

Fair Points on Greene. I don't see him being sent down either, just that I wouldn't mind going that route if we were carrying 7 d men.

Cards are still in the air, however, for carrying 8 d men. Sutter has not confirmed the route they're going just yet, and has said that he's toying with the idea. Carrying Forbort, Gilbert, LaDue, Greene for the bottom #5-6 wouldn't be a bad option. Lots of flexibility in the D corps then, while allowing for a good mix of youth and vet presence.

My expected opening day roster:

McNabb Doughty
Muzzin Gilbert
Martinez Greene

Forbort (LaDue*) as extra(s) with LaDue being my pipe dream.

Keeping 8 and having the youth mix in with the vets would allow Sutter to give vets nights off (As he was doing with Erhoff/Scuderi to an extent) and keep them fresh. Also gives lots of options with the goals of the D.

Say you want Offense this night

Muzzin Doughty
McNabb Gilbert
Martinez LaDue

Say you want more Defense:

McNabb Doughty
Muzzin Martinez
Forbort Greene

Say you want give the vets a night off when we go up against Vancouver or something:

McNabb Doughty
Muzzin LaDue
Forbort Martinez

It's a little crazy, but I can see lots of options.

as far as LaDue, yeah maybe its a little premature to put him in the NHL immediately, but he's 24 coming off of a good stretch in College Hockey. He's not a wide eyed 18 year old primed to be ruined. And, if all else fails, you can always drop him for Gravel or bring up a forward.

LaDue is a right hander! And part of my hoping for him to be in the line-up is that he's been the 2nd best Right handed D in camp so far. He's beat out Greene and Trotman, and if he keeps it up he deserves a shot.

Where LaDue is older and coming out of college it would still be good for him to be playing every night not sitting on the bench. So have him down and playing big minutes in Ontario. It's not like they aren't an hour drive from Staples.

I think Greene will be given every opportunity to fail miserably so I agree on LaDue.

I agree with this assessment. I think LaDue should be in our roster only if he is going to actually play. Its not worth keeping him up to be the 7th defenseman. Might as well get playing time in AHL.

I was making a joke in poor taste. One of the Oilers wings was wrestling with Greene on the boards after the puck left. I remember thinking that wasn't a good idea, as Greene is quite large. Guys skate got caught and it looks like his knee went.

Disclaimer: I've busted my knee before so I don't feel too bad about cracking jokes about it.

Gravel/Doughty
McNabb/LaDue
Forbort/Martinez

Just do it. They're going to need time to get through the growing pains. Might as well get a good draft pick off the next wave of call ups.

No Muzzin?
