Don't the Ducks pretty much have to go with the 7-3-1 approach if they don't want to expose Rakell?

Then they have Bieksa with an NMC, which means they can only protect two defensemen of the three mentioned. Duck homers are hopeful Bieksa will waive his NMC so the Ducks can trade him or leave him unprotected. Why would Bieksa waive?

Yeah, I hear you regarding if he would waive his NMC but I think he does. Who knows what type of discussions the Ducks, Bieksa, his agent have but I have a feeling something gets settled so he ends up being exposed.

With that contract, there is no way Vegas takes him. The Ducks will have better options available.

I highly doubt Vegas would take Bieksa if he was available so I can see him waiving his NMC. Like I said, for some dumb reason he doesn't, the Ducks will just buy him out. I know it'll be a $3.5 million cap hit if they do that but they have to. Can't lose Silfverberg or one of their young d-men to keep Bieksa. That'd be stupid.

Is Bieksa going to do this out of the goodness of his heart?

His agent will want compensation, and Anaheim can't give it to him. All it does is expose him for a trade. A buyout is a logical recourse.

Well then the Ducks give him some kind of assurance/handshake agreement that they won't trade him or send him down. They'll honor his NMC without the official title.

Something I agree with you on. Even though Vegas won't want Bieksa that doesn't mean someone else might not. Every player exposed is essentially up for auction.

A lot of the trade board posters have vegas taking Nolan in the draft. I can see the advantages.

$950,000 and only one year left. Selecting him doesn't help the kings with the cap at all since his contract can be buried.

i feel like i'm one of few people on the planet that would like to see nolan get used more

not like i'd shed a tear over him getting picked up by vegas but he seems like he got the short straw with sutter

He got injured a lot, when he played well, and was healthy, Sutter played him.

I think Vegas is more likely to take a Dowd, Shore or Lewis. None of their contracts are bad, and all are better players.

I am split. Sometime Nolan seems like he can fly out there, and I like that he plays with an edge. However given his contract and the role he has on the club I think I would rather see someone from Ontario get his ice time.

That said I would still welcome him back next year. There are definitely bigger issues than Jordan Nolan playing 4th line minutes.

I see Lewis being the last player protected.

I could see it too. Honestly wouldn't surprise me either way but I see the below options.

4x4:
Doughty, Muzzin, Martinez, Forbort, Kopitar, Carter, Pearson, Toffoli

7x3
Doughty, Muzzin, Martinez (assuming no trade before hand)
Kopitar, Carter, Pearson, Toffoli. Dowd, Shore, Lewis

yeah the speed impressed me sometimes, if he got a bit of space he could really tear across the ice. i mean, his hands obviously couldn't keep up but meh. i guess theoretically he is replaceable from ontario but he can be a better hitter/agitator than most of those guys

guess i'll hold my tongue til we see what stevens brings

his hands remind me of Sean Donovan.

I always felt that Sutter gave his fair-haired boy King all the opportunities that Nolan never got. I thought Nolan has more offensive upside, was tougher and more net presence. But Sutter never used him that way, King got those breaks. With a new team, he'll do fine used a bit differently.

right? king was up on kopi's wing for extended periods, did nolan ever see the 3rd?

definitely tougher and more willing to post up in front even if his finish was lacking

I've always felt this way too. Sure, Nolan would pull a ridiculous penalty here and there, but he often showed more skill to me than King.

You can't play a guy who is injured.

Nolan the last two seasons, missed considerable playing time, due to injury.

Nolan is horrific defensively though which is why he never got in the lineup or was buried on the 4th line playing 8 minutes a game. No question his skating and offensively skills are better than King's. King is just miles ahead defensively. How many times a game does Nolan do a Lucic and just throw the puck blindly up the middle in the Kings own zone? When you're terrible defensively and only average offensively, you don't get to play for Sutter.

King also played the PK, a lot.

High Pk minutes per game about 1:33 per game.

He is gone now, so that ice time will go to someone else.

This, I think a player like Nolan is the type of Player Sutter stereotypically likes, and I think he gave him a fair chance.

People are sure quick to blame sutter. Whatever happened to players needing to force their way onto teams and to force the coach to play them.

Again I would not say it's that you do not play for Sutter but with the MO of terrible defensively and average offensively you will struggle to play in the NHL period.

I'm one of Nolan's biggest supporters but he has gotten hurt the past two seasons right when he started playing really good hockey.

He didn't care to fight last season either so he didn't play with as much edge last season.

That's true. Actually, I wouldn't even call him average offensively. He didn't score a single goal in 2015-16 after all. Maybe average offensively for a 4th liner is a better way to put it.
