Still don't think Vegas takes Brown in the expansion draft under any circumstances.

I think they take Gaborik to fulfill the expansion draft cap requirements and at $4.5 or so he's cheap enough on a long enough contract but not too long to hinder future signings for LV

I guarantee the price to unload Brown, especially to Vegas, is cheaper than ever right now. He's had a good season. Not his best season obviously, but he has been one of the few bright spots we have. I'd bet Vegas would take him or a small sweetener.

Gaborik on the other hand :help:

Cheaper can be relative. That contract still ends in 2022. It's still a $6m cap hit. Instead of the sweetener being three 1st round picks and Kempe, it's now two 1st round picks and Kempe?

The interesting thing is that Sutter basically said that's all BS. A reporter asked Sutter about calling up people the day after Lombardi said what he said and Sutter pretty much said that the report was BS and no one was getting called up. Sounds like the two still aren't on the same page.

He could be saying that for all sorts of reasons. Maybe he doesn't want to give the guys on the team a reason to quit(we're calling up all the young guys because we're done), since coaches are more about the short term than the longer term view GM's use. Maybe he doesn't want any young guys in Ontario to do anything differently because they know they'll be called up. Coaches also say players have a lower body injury when their shoulder hurts. Even if nobody from Ontario is called up, that still doesn't mean Sutter wasn't manipulating the question.

E.Kane-A.Kopitar-D.Brown
D.Doughty-D.Forbort

T.Pearson-J.Carter-T.Toffoli
A.Martinez-K.Gravel

T.Lewis-A.Kempe-J.Brodzinski
B.McNabb-P.LaDue

N.Shore-M.Amadio-J.Nolan

Quick
Campbell

Kempe could be huge for the bottom 6 while our D should be better but this team is still not a cup contender unless AK,TT and JQ can step it up...

They don't need Gaborik's contract to meet the cap requirements. The low end is what, 60% of the cap? That's like $44m, which is less than $2m per player for 30 players in the draft. Any higher priced guy lowers that number by whatever %. If Vegas takes Fleury, that knocks out a huge chunk.

This is one of the reasons(a lot of dead cap space for years being another) why buying out Gaborik doesn't make sense. And then do what with the added cap space? The open space would be almost $4m next year. Who are you bringing in for less than $4m that is going to make a difference, and makes the dead cap space in a few years worth it? Might as well just keep Gaborik and hope he can get to 15 goals with the cast of misfit free agents that are out there. Outside of a trade free and clear that doesn't cost more future(the unlikeliest of scenarios), every year you keep Gaborik around makes his potential buyout a little less worse, and makes any potential trade a little bit more doable.

Of course he could retire, or get so hurt he goes on LTIR for years on end, but those are only a little more likely than a free and clear trade that costs the Kings nothing.

This is a good point. It also applies to trading Brown or Gaborik. Assuming there is a trade where say Vegas takes Brown and our potential top 10 first round pick in a deal, who do we get in free agency with the saved cap space?

Not a chance. They can sign UFAs to get to the cap floor.

Shore sucks and is not winger. Clifford or Andreoff would occupy that 4th line LW spot. Lewis mostly plays on the RW more oftern, so to spread out the toughness I would put Clifford/Andreoff with Kempe and Brod's and then Lewis with Clifford/Andreoff and Armadio.

This is also assuming Dowd gets picked up in the expansion draft.

At this point the Kings don't have a 3rd line center but three guys trying to fill that spot...Shore, Kempe, and Dowd.

The Kings roster will never turn over properly at forward until Gaborik or Brown is gone.

Those contracts are HORRIBLE and Lombardi did it to himself.

The D is fine, there is a mix of youth and not one bad contract.

Brown at least has showed up to play and been somewhat productive, he's still slightly overpayed, but the biggest issue is Gaborik by far.

Why this team waited so long to make these decisions baffles me.

I still have zero issue with the kids playing in Ontario this season.

What is this team's record with Kempe and LaDue in the lineup? That's with Quick back in net as well.

None of the call-ups make this team a contender. I prefer that they were given big minutes in all situations down in the AHL as opposed to fighting for minutes with Dwight King et al.

Now that it is near-officially over? Definitely get Brodz up here for a taste.

Also bring MacDermid up for the home against Calgary to run Tkachuk.

I didn't see this season as being salvageable and thought a good portion of the rookies called up this season would've been better served learning the rigors of the NHL. There was absolutely nothing to lose. Plus they're not teenagers so I wouldn't really equate this to throwing them to the wolves.

Anyhow, all we have to look forward to now is the progression of these young players. Sadly it has also left Ontario with nothing.

Kempe and LaDue are staying, except maybe to help out during the AHL playoffs. Brodz gets a taste to see what the NHL level is like. This will help focus his training over the summer. And yeah, I'd like to see the Mac Truck up for Tkachuk.

But Kempe just turned 20 in September, and this was LaDue's first pro season out of college. For all practical purposes, Kempe was a teenager when the season started, and a college season is a little different than an NHL season. How many players have ever been hurt by playing a few extra games in the AHL? How many guys have been by playing too many NHL games too early?

That's not a perfect equation though. Just because you burn out if you get to the NHL too early, that doesn't mean that's what caused your game to never get to the next level. Maybe you were never going to get to the next level, no matter what. That's the question every GM has to ask, and that's the risk they all take. When do you bring up a young guy? When don't you? How long do you give them? Like the draft, there's no perfect science to it.

Speaking of UFAs, maybe they will sign Bishop during that 72 hour period pre July 1st and that would take care of losing anyone else in the expansion.

If a free agent does sign with the Golden Knights, he would be Vegas' one selection from that player's team (Vegas is required to select or sign one player off each existing team's list of unprotected players, with a minimum of 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goalies).

Unlikely, of course, but not unthinkable.

If L.A. has a devil of a time signing free agents how is Vegas going to do? My guess is poorly unless they vastly overpay.

No state income tax could be a draw for some, and the GM will want to build up from the back, so they likely try and woo Bishop or Darling those 3 days before the expansion draft. Will see if anyone bites. It should be a better expansion team this go around based up the new ground rules.

I don't know what the tax breakdowns are in Nevada but I can bet they're much more favorable than living in CA. That alone could sway a free agent just looking for money.
