Getting a fourth round pick for 2018 while sitting outside of the playoffs is asset management?

Better than missing the playoffs and getting zero for King.

The problem is with everyone saying Iginla is better than King at the moment when that is false.

The team is now worse defensively with the idea being they can sacrifice there a little bit (Bishop or Quick in net every game) in the hopes that Iginla can energize the offense directly or indirectly.

Like he said...caught between selling/buying. So he sold King since he'd walk at year-end and got Iginla for free outside of salary paid.

I'm sure you're right but it's a little late in the season and it's reasonable to expect some rust on Quick. I hope it's a short leash.

I think Bishop should play a majority of the games and Quick should only play on the second end of the back-to-backs. Quick is our franchise goalie and just came back from what seems to be a serious injury. Why risk irritating his injury and jeopardizing his career for the remainder of his contract with the Kings when: (a) Bishop is an elite no. 1 goaltender and can get the job done almost just as well; and (b) we are not serious contenders and this is just a retool year?

Getting a fourth round pick for 2018 while sitting outside of the playoffs is asset management?

No, getting a 4th for a UFA is the kind of asset management that everyone seems to want Lombardi to do. Sell, sell, sell!

He did that, and then replaced King with Iginla, for nothing. Basically traded King(UFA) for Iginla(UFA) and a 4th(maybe a 3rd) in 2018, which is making a draft pick appear out of nowhere.

This offseason is going to be pretty interesting given the fact that everyone is waiting on the expansion draft. We have a lot of bullet to send LV way in the form of Bishop, Brown, Amart, Muzzin, Gabaorik, McNabb, Lewis and Dowd, the question is do they bite on any of that??
Our defense is pretty solid heading into next season considering the kids are getting some great run at a crucial time of the season that will one help out in the development process.

Derek Forbort-Drew Doughty
Jake Muzzin-Paul LaDue
Alec Martinez-Kevin Gravel
Brayden McNabb-Matt Greene

Our offense will always be the problem, however we have some young kids that are really interesting in Ontario such as Brodz, Amadio, and Mersch and maybe one damn day we'll get a Russian to actually play here.

Dustin Brown-Anze Kopitar-Marian Gaborik
Tanner Pearson-Jeff Carter-Tyler Toffoli
Adrian Kempe-Nic Dowd-Johnny Brodz
Michael Mersch-Nick Shore-Trevor Lewis
Andre Andreoff-Michael Amadio-Jordan Nolan
Kyle Clifford

Jonathan Quick
Ben Bishop
Jack Campbell
Jeff Zatkoff

Most importantly, as I've mentioned above... the kids on D are getting playoff hunt/do-or-die type games that will only help their development and hopefully fuel their hunger for next season where a much better version of our Kings will take the ice... So here's hoping we make the playoffs and get this team on a nice run...

This off season is probably going to be the most interesting one in the past 5 years. Whether this is a good idea or not, there are rumblings that Gaborik may get bought out. I think Brown probably stays, but it will be interesting to see if Dean can package via an overpayment to Vegas in order to trade for Brown (i.e., a first rounder and Kempe going the other way).

Assuming Brown and Gaborik stay, by trading King, Dean has shown that he is not willing to pay over a $1 million for bottom sixers. I think he will try to move Clifford (assuming there are any takers) and Lewis may be the highest paid bottom sixer on our team at above $2 million. Open roster spots will go to Brodzinski and Kempe (if he is not traded with a cap dump).

Greene may go on LTIR, which will open up cap space. And, if we trade Martinez for a top six winger, we may solve our offensive problems with no net gain in cap.

Hopefully we can resign Pearson and Toffoli to long term deals, together worth $10 million.

Lots of moves to be made and possible dealings with Vegas.

Fingers crossed.

1st+Kempe+Brown to LV is something I do in a heartbeat. Unlikely LV is looking to take on long-term crap contracts even with that kind of incentive though

it would be sweet if Dean could somehow package the rights to Bishop along with picks/prospects to entice LV into taking Gabo's contract. I know its a pipe dream, but I cant stop thinking about it. it would really suck to have to buy him out

If Gabby can bring it in this stretch he could save himself. I don't like the idea of any more buyouts.

A stagnant cap doesn't help.

Guess it depends on what the freed up money goes to.

I'm probably a sucker tho, I think he can turn it around.

Vegas taking Brown or Gaborik would be s monumental game changer.

Not sure who steps in their open spots tho in any case. Unless they are planning to youth fillers ala Chicago.

Is LA's farm even capable?

So you are willing to give up a first and a ready to hatch prospect for about 3-4 mil in cap space? No thanks.

I was playing around on Cap Friendly's option to build the Kings roster for 2017-2018, and it appears that we will be about a million over the cap if we resign Toffoli and Pearson for about $10 million together and fill empty roster spots with $1 million a year guys. This is even with Greene on LTIR.

Shore, Brodzinksi, Gravel, and LaDue will need contracts also.

If we trade Martinez in a deal, we would have to bring in a top 6ish forward that makes around $3 million. Not sure where we can find someone like that.

within a year, (if not now) the worst contract on the team will be the Perimitar one.
really locked the Kings into having to let go / move other good players and
replace them with under 1 mill players. Shame.

True, getting a 4th than King is better than nothing. Just like drafting Hickey 4th overall is better than abstaining from making a pick altogether. These are pretty low standards for a GM who was previously pretty creative.

He got caught between selling and buying because he couldn't commit to making a direction. He chose to buy Bishop and make a playoff push. He chose to buy Iginla. He chose to sell King. I'm not going to complain on selling King, but he can't say he was caught between buying and selling when he's the manager who chooses the team's direction.

He also traded a recent 2nd round pick for a rental goalie when the Kings, at this rate, aren't making the playoffs. King, Bishop, and Iginla becoming UFAs at the end of this season are essentially zeroed out. As far as future assets for this deadline, he traded:
2015 2nd round pick (Cernak)
2017 7th round pick

for a
2018 4th round pick
2017 5th round pick

That's not sell, sell, sell-ing.

That 4th for Iginla, doesn't it go away if we don't make the playoffs anyway?

As in, we got him for nothing? As in, who gives a damn?

And if a GM makes a meh pick like Cernak, I don't expect them to sit there and hold on to the prospect as some form of weird penance. Move him for something and try again.

Shore seen with his arm in a sling today. I guess Andreoff is now in or do they call up Brodzinski? The Reign are in town this weekend.

For Jarome Iginla, the Kings traded their 4th round pick in 2018 if they win the Stanley Cup in 2017 OR they re-sign him for the 2017-2018 season.

The conditions on our picks are here: http://www.prosportstransactions.com//hockey/DraftTrades/Future/Kings.htm
