They're going to let Quick fail first. He's the guy. He's the one that will be here next year.
I'm sure you're right but it's a little late in the season and it's reasonable to expect some rust on Quick. I hope it's a short leash.

Getting a fourth round pick for 2018 while sitting outside of the playoffs is asset management?

1st+Kempe+Brown to LV is something I do in a heartbeat. Unlikely LV is looking to take on long-term crap contracts even with that kind of incentive though
And then do what with the cap space?

Kings are likely just going to have to buyout Gaborik this summer to get cap space.
I think so too, no one is going to want his contract and the Kings likely won't be competitive by the time his buyout hit becomes an issue
Better than missing the playoffs and getting zero for King.
The problem is with everyone saying Iginla is better than King at the moment when that is false.
The team is now worse defensively with the idea being they can sacrifice there a little bit (Bishop or Quick in net every game) in the hopes that Iginla can energize the offense directly or indirectly.
Like he said...caught between selling/buying. So he sold King since he'd walk at year-end and got Iginla for free outside of salary paid.
No, getting a 4th for a UFA is the kind of asset management that everyone seems to want Lombardi to do. Sell, sell, sell!
He did that, and then replaced King with Iginla, for nothing. Basically traded King(UFA) for Iginla(UFA) and a 4th(maybe a 3rd) in 2018, which is making a draft pick appear out of nowhere.
Dwight King starts on the 4th line in Montreal.
That 4th for Iginla, doesn't it go away if we don't make the playoffs anyway?
As in, we got him for nothing? As in, who gives a damn?
And if a GM makes a meh pick like Cernak, I don't expect them to sit there and hold on to the prospect as some form of weird penance. Move him for something and try again.
For Jarome Iginla, the Kings traded their 4th round pick in 2018 if they win the Stanley Cup in 2017 OR they re-sign him for the 2017-2018 season.
