We really seriously have to get better in the dot. Don`t see any developing faceoff specialists on our roster, so yes I`m all in on the Helm UFA sweepstakes. Any decent faceoff/defensive specialists out there on the UFA market?

No we don't.
Having your players be better on the FO is nice, but FO specialist is waste of a roster space.
The best FO impact is about 3-4 goals in impact over the duration of a season, and those are the extreme cases... 90% of centres are within +/-1 goal.
It's a minor part of what makes a player what they are.

Is that 5 on 5 only or does it include special teams?

I'm good with this lineup. Maybe Burmi in on the 4th line. I would like him available for the pk.

If we could get a decent dman for Stafford and a prospect I'd be very happy.

I don't think we get that much for Staff. He is only under contract for 1 year. He is a little overpaid.

Don't know if it has been mentioned but Hnidy did an interview with H &L I believe yesterday where he indicated that 5 D were a lock for next year -- the 5th, Chiarot!

He went on to mention guys like Morrissey & Melchiori would be in the battle for other spot. No mention of Postma (yea Maurice hates him) or Stu (we should be so lucky).

Anyway, any confirmation that Stu might not be a regular next year is good news. I know that Hnidy doesn't have all the info on these things but he usually has a good feel.

There should be no way shape or form that Melchiori should be in contention for a spot. Disappointed that Chariot is seemingly being gifted a spot as well...

I don't have a problem with Melchiori if his spot is in the PB. I don't think you can call listing Chiarot as being among our top 5 giving him a spot. Who do we have who ranks higher? This is a good thing. It means that Stu is #6 at best and if Morrissey makes the team it is Stu who moves out.

Edit: How could I forget Postma? He should be above Chiarot, who should be 6 and competing with Morrissey for a starting spot.

Yup Chariot is in the pressbox for me, behind both Postma and Morrissey.

The first thing I would do if I am Chevy is to trade Trouba for Hamonic, because I think with Buff and Myers we have two RHD who can carry the offense, and are sufficiently adequate defensively, but we need a true shut down d-man, someone who can play against the league's best, and who is a penalty killer, before anything else. I don't think Trouba will ever attain that watermark. Hamonic shut down Crosby in the playoffs, and that is not easy to do. Bring our boy home, for the rest of his career, which will conceivably be more than the 4 years we will retain Trouba.

My defense is mobile.

Enstrom-Hamonic
Chiarot-Buff
Morrissey-Myers
Postma as a reserve (in year 6, we finally have more Canadians than others on our D, and more than 50% are W graduates, which bodes well methinks)

Also the two younger players are protected somewhat by their d partners. If we want to play 4 d, I like Myers and Buff together, more than Trouba and Buff, as they have contributed on game tying goal with the goalie pulled, and one beauty shorty 3 on 5, to my memory.

I would trade Stuart for a draft pick, or a LHD prospect for the Moose.

Offensively we need a finisher, but we will likely draft Matthew Tkachuk, who will help us down the road, but not immediately, I fathom.

Ehlers-Scheifele-Wheeler is an excellent top line.

Our second line is a little more problematic.

I like Stafford as a 2nd liner, over Perrault, given the size of the players he will play with. I would like to see Little continue as a 2nd line centre, with either Petan, or Connor on his left wing. But neither are sure bets. Having a vet compete in camp would be prudent. I am hoping Petan shows more in his second year.

I would demote Perrault to the 3rd line, with Burmistrov, and have Armia as the winger. Burmi and Armia could form a top PK unit, with Lowry and Thorburn as well, getting mileage out of our bottom liners, to use our top liners more effectively. Perrault on the point with Buff on the PP, with our top line, gives us a our best PP, in my opinion, and the 2nd line, with Myers and Hamonic would form a good secondary PP.

I like Lowry and Thorburn together, they can really battle, and tenderize opposing d. I thoroughly dislike watching Halischuk on their line, he just doesn't have NHL skill. I think Brendan Lemieux brings alot more to the table. He would give that 4th line the ability to finish occasionally, put some extra points on the board. And lacking top talent, we could at least become a team that is capable of rolling 4 lines, at all times.

Peluso gives us that extra toughness, in a tough division. I would like to see Lipon get the 23rd roster spot, maybe bring back Tlusty to compete with him.

We have a solid top line then with the Moose, with Connor (or Petan), with De Leo and Kosmachuk.

I would send Copp to the minors, he just needs more development in my opinion. He has good defensive awareness, but needs more maturity, and offensive flair, which he can get with some more ice time. Lowry is a better player, and Burmi can shadow with the best of them. Having Perrault take some his draws would help him in his main weakness. If Ducky replaces Vincent behind the bench, the results will be tangible. I also see Marko Dano as someone who should probably start next year in the minors, and work his way up. Maybe Tanev starts the season on the 2nd line of the Moose with these two. Or Lemieux, if he is not ready.

I'd bring Haliscuk back on a two-way, and bring in Jordin Tootoo, who would be a fan favorite on the Moose, as he and Halischuk did have some good chemistry in Nashville. With Ryan Olsen as their centre they could form a formidable 3rd line with the Moose.

Blomqvist and Brassard would be my two wingers for the Moose's 4th line, with whomever (John Albert?) as their centre. I'm not if C.J. Franklin will graduate next year, but perhaps he, Tanner Lane and Jimmy Lodge are our top line in Tulsa.

Defensively, we need help at LHD on the Moose. Acquiring a tweener, who fits our team, like Tyler Wotherspoon would be a start. I don't know if Sami Niku would be ready to make the jump, but he is an option. Melchiori does not impress me much, he is not steady like Chiarot. I would prefer to bring back Jay Harrison, and make him the captain of the Moose, allowing him to transition from player to coach, within the organization. The right side will need development with Kichton, leading the offense, and Kostalek and Nogier developing into steady stay at home defensemen, which was why I would prefer the seasoned vet for the long road.

Goaltending, I think we need to let Hutch go. He can not carry the load. Pavelec is a better goalie, and having Helleybuck pushing him is going to make us strong in net.

I would like to see Comrie get more games with the Moose, and if he is bought out, or if there is a deal to be made, with retention, bring in Ben Scrivens as the #4 goalie in the organization, a veteran to help in the mentoring process.

I think our goal next season should be to become a team that can effectively win 2-1, 3-2 games, by being more mobile, using more transition speed, being stronger on the special teams (Hamonic, Petan), and reliable in net.

As for rearranging the letters, I would make Wheeler the captain, and make Scheifele and Buff alternates. This would be a step to ensuring our leaders are also our best players.

If we have another year like this or worse next year, what's the over under of Wheeler requesting a trade? The disappointment on his face every interview scares me.

For the life of me, I just can't wrap my head around this stat. You get a significant number of goals each season that fully appear the result of a won face off. No face off win, no goal. Nevermind all the less obvious cases where the possession obtained by a face off later leads to a goal for, or perhaps might have prevented a goal against.

Weird.

Pretty natural I think for a competitive guy at the end of a season like this one has been. He gives it all every game. He is obviously tired of losing. The players will have suffered the same disappointment as we have after the high expectations built up last year. Give him a month or so after the season to digest it and he will be fine.

It isn't that FO wins don't lead to goals. It is that over the course of a season they tend to even out so that the difference between a good FO man and a poor one is very little. Only when you go to the extremes of good v bad FO men do you find a substantial difference and even there it is less than we would intuitively expect.

Is it just my eye test or have we played well most games in the last month with this roster and outplayed teams and lost? I think we can be okay next year if we can stay outve the box and get good Helly tending. I think the PK will be better next year, Im not so sure with our PP, I haven't seen progress in 5 years. The only hope is Ehlers, Connor, Petan, Scheif, MP and Buff make our PP better but that will take time.

Yeah I guess that must be it. A rockstar FO% is like what, 57%.

If last nights game is any indicator the Jets will get 3-4 minors/gm if they all just skate to the nearest corner and don't move. You'd think there was a quota!

But yes they have been looking good even missing Little, Perreault and Ehlers for much of the time, plus Myers and Enstrom.

The PK has been better lately but I think that is just variance. They will be back to normal next year. The PP is just indescribable. I think we are more dangerous when short handed. Our Power Play is a Power Failure, a Blackout! It has to be the systems they are using to be this bad this long. We have been employing some pretty good hockey players. I don't think it is the personnel.

I think at this point its also a confidence thing. They look so unsure of themselves and slow down and 2nd guess constantly. i'm not sure who is out there, but they need to bring someone in who can set up a structure and get them to buy in.

Yes. It is quite evident to the naked eye. You would think that practicing against our PK would boos their confidence but no such luck.

I don't have the technical knowledge of the game to be able to pretend to have the solution but the key word has to be 'power'. It seems to me it is way too much perimeter play. When the PK collapses into its box you have more room to move around. Do something unexpected. And get 1 or 2 guys in close.

Come to think of it maybe that is the flaw in our PK too. It practices against our PP so in practice that @#$#@%^& passive box works!

You may have found the issue lol. I think it starts with quick puck movement and having the players on the pp move in and out of space. We do neither, our players are static and the passes are slow and predictable.

We have the pieces that we should be able to instill a good system. Petan, Ehlers, Conner, Morrissey all move the puck quickly so there is hope that if a suitable coach is brought in we can make some headway next year.

According to Lawless we are getting the same coaches back. :thumbd: Ultimately it is Maurice who decides how these things will be done but if he is not capable of coaching successful ST's then HE NEEDS TO HIRE coaches who are!

Sigh. We will see if he is going to make changes next year. Maybe the same coaching staff is adequate if he changes the direction.

What do you guys think about having Perrault as the 3C next year? It would give the Jets really good centre depth and he could be a good vet to carry a couple of young wingers (Dano, Armia, Petan etc.).

That's assuming the second line is Connor - Little - Stafford
