PS. I was wrong about Stone needing to be re-upped. He's signed for the next two years. So to be honest, I don't know why Ottawa doesn't want to re-sign Hoffman. Doesn't seem to be a "him or Player X" sort of situation.

They didn't want to pay him big money on a long term contract. They were afraid that his breakout season would be a flash in the pan. They're probably less afraid after he did even better this year. The question though is whether they can afford him. Last year, he would have cost 4m with some term. Odds are he costs closer to 5m with term now. And that's if he wants to stay.

Florida is going away from what made them a pain in the ass to play against.

Yeah I'm a little confused by this move for them. Sure they recoup some picks and get a nice prospect, but don't they have a gazillion forward prospects anyway?

I'm probably reading too much into this, but I wonder if they are anticipating losing someone to budget constraints (Trocheck maybe:nod:)

Why not Tarasenko? Malkin seems at best with a drive down right boards and put one through his legs to a left shot to drive and create and shoot or give it back to him.

Marc-Andre Fleury (750k retained)
Patric Hornqvist
Olli Maatta

For

Vladimir Tarasenko

Sid gets new best friend. Kunitz. JK when he leaves adding 9.7 salary of Stamkos is a wash

Well done my friend.

Eakin would be perfect here. Don't see Dallas trading him.

Yeah I'd definitely take Eakin at 3.85 over Boedker at 5+MM. Eakin can fill in as top 6 center, bottom 6 center, top 6 left winger. Very versatile guy, can skate, and puts up 30-35 ES points. He doesn't get much PP time so that's not an issue here and is a good PK option. He can play winger next year and then transition to center, if necessary, should we let Bones walk.

Having said that, he seems too important to Dallas to move for Fleury. I guess it depends who they promote or switch around. Janmark can play center. Dickinson might be ready, etc.

Serious question ... if we did somehow acquire Hoffman from the Sens, would the FO make him choose a new number or would he be able to wear #68?

I missed it a couple pages back, but Florida's Gudbranson trade is, I'm guessing, a money thing. They save $2.6 million in actual dollars in the deal. In addition, Gudbranson was set to go arbitration eligible RFA the same year as Huberdeau and Ekblad's contracts expire. They had some tough choices coming and it's not really a surprise that they'd choose to pay the latter two instead of the former.

I'm not sure if this makes them more likely to pay Trochek what he will want, though. Probably depends on what he wants and what Campbell wants.

Jagr and Barkov receive $5.5 million in raises over the summer, so between the (probable) Mitchell retirement and Gudbranson trade, they're cutting $6.7 million (and that's ignoring that they may need to sign another D), leaving $1.2 milion in new dollars (I'm ignoring Purcell and Hudler because they were merc rentals who exceeded the internal budget--ownership had to grant Tallon an exception for them). IDK if that's going to be enough. If Campbell took, for example, a $1 million haircut, that $2.2 million will get them in range of re-signing Trochek to a 2 year deal, but they're probably a year out from Huberdeau and Ekblad's salaries going up by a combined $10 million and may want to just bank the savings for that.

Lot of moving pieces with that team over the summer. Gudbranson was a tough choice, but they have a few more ahead, unless the owners sign off on being a cap ceiling team, which I wouldn't count on.

He doesn't seem to have a huge emotional connection to that number since he apparently wore others (19 and 27(?), I think, this has been discussed before somewhere) in the AHL and juniors, so I'd expect him to change it on his own accord. Would you want to go out wearing a Penguins 68 jersey?
No idea whether the FO would step in otherwise, it's not retired yet, but between the likelihoods of the Pens having to get him first and him having to insist, I doubt it'll become a problem.

I have a feeling they'd leave it up to him but strongly suggest 86

Yeah, I didn't figure that he'd wear it if he did wind up on the team. I did not know he'd worn other numbers, although admittedly I haven't really followed him all that closely.

Me neither actually. I just distinctly remember another discussion about him wearing #68 in general, where people said that.

Kap's career is impossible to determine at this point. Pouliot we know will at least be an NHL defenseman in some capacity and likely more to some extent. He has flaws that aren't out of the ordinary for his age as a Dman and he puts up points.

Yah, but kap can play LW, younger. Id definitely trade DP for kap. 1 for 1. We have alot of young PMD.
