Saw this tweet this morning and it is noteworthy...as to why / how the Kings have 12 regulation wins, yet 9 OT wins??

>>>> Trick: Explain OT, 3 on 3, non-structured dominance. Lack of talent? Lack of skill? Or lack of Sutter...? <<<<<

What is it about the OT, 3 on 3 dominance? It would seem the 'non-structured' factor, along with guys like Carter, Pearson, Doughty, Martinez, can skate and move the puck
and are free to use their skill and speed...with ONE goal: to fully engage 100% to score and not one thought about defense. Sure, they know they must cover to get back and defend, but it is all out to score. And they do it better than any other unit in the NHL.
But of course, 5 on 5 is a different animal.

15-16:
34 regulation wins
12 3v3 OT wins

14-15:
37 regulation wins
1 4v4 OT win

The 37 wins two years ago was tied for 4th most in the league.

What's the difference? Gaborik could still score in 14-15. Lucic was around last year. Kopitar has 4 goals this year. The problem isn't Sutter or the bottom 6.

I know I'm like the only one that thinks it around here, but the 2015 team was better than last year's team and I'll believe that until the day I die.

Last year's team heavily buoyed by the change to 3 v. 3 OT, just like this year's team.

Last season was a mirage. Team has been getting worse since June of 2014.

An argument could be made for that. With Carter, Gaborik, Toffoli, Williams, Kopitar, and then Pearson had 12 goals in 42 games, they were deeper up front. They just could not win in OT or the SO, or beat the Oilers in a must win game.

Now it's early March, at the earliest, for Quick. I'm sure every loss pushes that back a little more.

Quick should just be out for the entire season.

Lombardi's comments from that article clearly point to a park and ride approach. We either make playoffs or miss, there's no white knight coming to save us this season.

It's the right approach. This is a mediocre team with miserable luck, right now is not the time to be pushing anything. Park and ride, get a high draft pick, see how expansion pans out, resign Pearson and Toffoli (who might get a bargain deal if his play doesn't improve this season. He has little leverage as an RFA), and then see where we're at.

Well said, that's exactly what I was thinking about on my drive right now--Lombardi just taking the 'wait and see' approach. Nothing worth sacrificing simply to MAKE the playoffs, and this team is too good to be a top-5 pick team (yes, even if you're a pessimist)...these guys are gonna ride it out and figure it out on their own and adjust later.

They make the playoffs if Pearson doesn't break his leg. Who knows what last year's team looks like if OT is 4 v 4.

Quick coming back to save this team has been a pipe dream. Gain nothing by rushing him back in there.

Definitely should shut Quick down and give Kopitar a rest. Land a high draft pick who could hopefully be ready in 3-4 years tops, and do a better job in the 2nd and later rounds like they used to do when finding gems like Simmonds, Voynov, Martinez, etc.

Focus on next season because this season is a lost cause.

Hate to burst your bubbles but unless EVERYONE gets injured there's no way this is a bottom-five team.

There is some decent talent in the first round regardless.

I'm excited to see what the drafting team can do with this 'renewed focus' on drafting. We're always pretty active slinging picks around to get our guy.

Not this year, and I think that's been Lombardi's plan since last summer started. I think he did sacrifice something simply to make the playoffs last year, because you don't want that pick traded to Carolina to become Matthews. The same way Lombardi protected himself in 14-15, in case they missed the playoffs, because you don't want that pick to become McDavid.

I think Lombardi knows he's in a tough spot. Can't even really re-tool when Brown and Gaborik are both still signed until 2021. No big money coming off the books, and two more guys need bigger deals. I think the Kings might be in wait and see mode, not just this year, but for the foreseeable future.

I'd still try to make the playoffs. Budaj has been adequate, trade a mid/late round pick for someone to give him the night off once in a while. Someone better than Zatkoff, and that bar is set pretty damn low. Enroth would've been prefect if not for the comments after last season. Don't make any other moves. Forget about the regular season for Quick and focus on trying to get him ready for the playoffs. Kopitar has gotta figure it out eventually. Toffoli will be back. If this team can get to the playoffs anything can happen. The defence is there. Anaheim is beatable. So is San Jose. And Chicago. Don't even get me started on Edmonton.

It's weird to say but I feel good about our chances in a playoff series vs. anyone (except maybe SJ), but I'm worried about our chances of making it that far

But agreed, once everyone gets healthy, and Kopitar inevitably (IMO, obviously) and Toffoli get going, we'll be more than a handful. It sounds like the org is considering bringing up Campbell and stashing Zatkoff, so there's at least a cheap tryout on the table there. But we aren't gonna get far in any single game with a .881 goalie.

2nd worst save percentage in the league for goalies with >12 games played, even though he's only started 8. inexcusable and unacceptable. I thought the Kings system was supposed to make goalies look better than they are? :sarcasm: :help:

Sounds like shedding salary for a trade to me.

Brings production but terrible possession metrics and terrible defensively/GF% relative to his team for the entire duration of the contract.

Too expensive for an on-ice liability even if he puts up decent offensive numbers for his role. Kings consistently embarrassed this guy.

Not that crazy. D is much better at breaking out the puck then what they had in the playoffs last year. The depth guys are contributing. Add Toffoli back in the mix and Kopitar/Gaborik show up they might do something.

Maybe that's with the bump from playing in the Kings system! :naughty:

Zatkoff should never, ever see the ice. Again. His body language reeks of someone who has completely lost their confidence. It's a horrible feeling that anything remotely difficult to stop is going in.
