I don't believe he would have made the team anyway, even before this issue with the Islanders. He's pretty much blown whatever chance he had left now, I would have to think.

before all this I didn't have him in my Top 12...the only opening I saw for him was if more players are unavailable (NHL) than expected and/or injuries...then he could possibly creep in there....but now I think he has no shot whatsoever.

And I've always defended the player.

Putting aside the alleged/supposed/evidenced "attitude" and "character" issues, to be honest I have never been all that impressed with his game. I have never had him in my 13-man forward group, either last year or heading into the current season.

Seems like Fabbri is a lock for St.Louis and probably won't get loaned since he's going to be on a great team and they shouldn't mess with him since they are contenders. One of McCann/Virtanen are probably starting with the Canucks and I think one stays the whole season. Didn't loan Horvat last year and he did great in the 2nd half of the season and I assume they do the same this season.

That would make Team Canada's Top 2 centers (according to my depth chart) Matthew Barzal (who's looking decent at Iles camp and Rourke Chartier. Not a big fan of Strome at this point unless his skating has dramatically improved since we last saw him. So, minus McJesus, Fabbri, Bennett and McCann + 1 or 2 others, sorry, it will take a monster miracle performance to repeat... if the team can even compete for a medal I'd be ecstatic.

if in fact McCann sticks in Van City. I'm at a loss as to what to do with Konecny. I'd like to play him further up in the lineup, but not sure where exactly. I will have to watch a few Ottawa games to get a handle on where he's at...but my initial thought is 3rd. line RW

If that's our lineup, I'll be sad.

Why so sad? With some decent coaching and inspired play, they could finish 5th. )))

I made 2 debatable choices. Leaving off Strome (Last year's OHL scoring champion).

I think Strome going up against Matthews would be a disaster. Matthews on big ice would eat his lunch, steal his lunch money and then take his girlfriend out after the game for milkshakes and a little handholding.

Crouse. I don't think we need bruisers in Europe, but Hockey Canada will take him if available as he is a returning player...

Yuck (no offense). Merkley is another option up front, and of course Crouse needs to be there. Strome will be there, but I'd probably play (i.e. shelter) him on the wing and in a lesser role. You could also move point to C, his natural position, and shift up Konecny in the lineup. He should be in the top-6, IMO.

hey, no offense taken. but there's not much left if NHL GMs are being dopes. Merkley. right. He's a decent option.

Fleury is also still with his NHL team.

I'm not that worried about Strome's skating. He isn't a world beater, although neither was Reinhart and he did fine. Strome was good at Hlinka, so I think it will be okay.

They're not going to leave Crouse off the team if he's available. He's a good goal scorer so that's helpful.

I don't see them taking both Merkely and Konecny - and I think Merkley will be the odd one out.

It's a bit concerning that a lot of the players who haven't been sent back are guys with good size. But there's still lots of time for people to get cut.

Yeah, he isn't nearly good enough to take him on the team and deal with all the baggage.

And Reinhart wasn't very good in Sweden as an underage player. Much better on N.A. ice a year later. Same goes for Strome. so, I'm not as confident as you.

Agreed on Crouse. He's more than a bruiser - he's a good goal scorer (as you mentioned), great defensively (especially at this level of competition), and can anchor a PK unit. I could see him ride shotgun on one of the scoring lines with our smaller, skilled players - which we seem to have in abundance this year.

My personal concerns with Strome are both poor skating (agility, ability to accelerate), as well as a poor motor. He drifts around a lot. There's a spot for him on this team, but needs to be put in a position where he can be useful - i.e. on the PP, with players who can cover defensively for him, and are frankly good skaters.

As you pointed out, he was an underage player. And the entire team was poor (except for Mantha, sort of).

and Strome would be an underage player in Europe, thus I don't share your confidence that Strome would be fine this coming tournament. But, as always, would love to be wrong.

regardless, it's good to have hockey back and looking forward to how it all plays out from now to next June.

Chabot has looked great in our camp ,but he will be returning to junior very soon .I think he has a great shot at making this squad ,he is a real good PMD with an improving defensive game .He would look great manning the left side of the number 1 pp unit :handclap:

I don't want to sound like a homer, but Dermott looked really good with the Leafs in training camp. He could be a huge help I think for Canada in this tournament.

I hope Ho-Sang makes the team. He sacrificed a whole NHL season to be sure he plays for TC. You don't see that often. :naughty:

Yeah that team looks brutal on paper but eh, maybe a great team effort and stellar defence + goaltending can shutdown the tough teams. I do like our wingers though, a lot of skill there and some guys with size. We can always just mail it in and fight these guys for a moral victory, seems like the best option with this weak roster. Centres are weak though, not a lot of size but I guess the talent is there. I'm looking at our centres and hoping that I'm missing someone but looks like I'm out of luck. Marner, Point, Beauvillier play centre don't they? I know in training camp they've probably played winger but they can play centre and they got a lot of speed which would be key on the big ice.

Dal Colle - Point - Konecny
Virtanen - Marner - Gauthier
Crouse - Beauvillier - Hawryluk
Chartier - Quenneville - Barzal
Watson

Sanheim - Juulsen
Fleury - Hicketts
Hickey - Dermott
LeBlanc

McDonald
Blackwood

Maybe the roster can do well but it'll be young and fairly small. Marner in between 2 big snipers might be deadly but if those guys can play centre, I think we could alright on second thought.

To be fair, he had almost 0% chance of making the roster. The Islanders have so many forwards.

He would have to beat out Barzal, Petrov and another top 9 forward to force a trade.

Not happening, but he did mess up a chance to play with JT.

Isles an isles fan I would be absolutley thrilled if Barzal Dal Colle and Beauvillier all made the team. I don't expect Ho-Sang to make it but that would be cool.

If nothing else, I think Strome could be a difference-maker on the pp. He's got such a quick, hard release. He reminds me of Heatley, who also had skating issues but represented Canada well internationally.

We'll see. I have my doubts
I think he has a better chance to be that difference maker in 2017 with another year of development behind him and on N. American ice. They returned Domi for a 2nd year...but then again, Domi was a mid 1st rd. pick and not a Top 3 pick. So, he may not even be available in 2017. Hell, no guarantee that Arizona returns him to junior this year.

Brayden Point has been returned to junior.

Re Crouse - i was reminded today that he has an OHL suspension that won't expire until Oct. 16, so wouldn't expect him back to the OHL until then (assuming he comes back - I haven't seen him in Fl).

Re Strome - if he doesn't make the team it would be a shocker (assuming he's available). How impactful he might be is another debate...but I don't see him missing the team. Lol, I'm good at predicting wrong for this tourney, so we'll see!
