WJC: 2016 — Sweden Roster Talk

I dont think any player were particularly good through out the games. There were stretches for some players.

So, the defense is set now:

Gabriel Carlsson
Marcus Pettersson
Gustav Forsling
Adam Ollas Mattsson
Andreas Englund
Jacob Larsson
William Lagesson

Not thrilled about this... This is probably the worst D core we have had in quite some time. When we have the offensive power..

Think Nylander looked underwhelming.

He was the best player on the ice for both teams imo but I agree he did look underwhelming.

He is kind of held to a higher standard than everyone else though, because he's supposed to be the best player - kind of a lose/lose situation

The non-Nylander side was atrocious on the 5 on 3 power plays. They were forcing everything. I think it was Kempe and Holmstrom.

I wouldn't consider 2 assists unreal zone entries and a possible goal to be "underwhelming" but I guess you Swedes have higher expectations of Willy than I do.

On a team short on real good puckmovers on D we lose our best puckmover. Grönborg's love of defensive D who "makes the simple play" might bite him in the ass. Hopefully the fwds are good enough to cover.

Yeah I mean he was their number one option all game... He created on almost every shift, they ran the power play through him and Alex... Although the 5 on 3 could've been better but that is also a credit to Canada getting in the lanes. His zone entries were amazing, that drop pass at the end which almost set up a goal as an example.

Only thing I can critique is he needs to shoot more. At times it seems like he's trying to set up someone else when he could just walk in and snipe it himself. Marner kind of does the same thing and it's frustrating to watch at times lol.

That's what I was wanting to see. He's got some strength on these guys, and I'd like to see him try to stickhandle his way into the slot for a shot rather than pull up around the outside and look for a pass. That being said he was amazing on some zone entries. Clearly a level above the tourney.

I'd like to think he's just getting warmed up since these were just exhibition games.

Aho out 4-6 weeks
It's really a shame that they didn't pick Kylington. He's the best puck moving defenseman they have, and he have so many tools that could be utilized pretty much everywhere on the PP. I was ok with him not being picked, because of Aho and Forsling already being there. But without Aho, he should be there.

Seems like we lose an important piece every year, during the exhibition games.

Especially against Canada.

Nylander was fine, he's the least of our problems. Not too worried about the goaltending either. Söderström got very little help this game and he really isn't expected to be our starter this tournament anyway.

I am worried about our D though, but the good thing is it can't get any worse than this. Happy we didn't win the game, this will be a really good lesson for the team.

Yep, it was Kempe & Holmstrom on that side.

They were trying to force the slam dunk to Lindblom almost every play when they got the puck. Which was silly as waiting and trying to get that pass is counter-intuitive... that pass can only come in the split second when the coverage gives him a mili-second of time to move into a bit of space, and the coverage will not break that way when the puck is so stationary.

Also Lindblom is a lefty... the pass from the left side makes 10x more sense, when the puck is on the right the only way he should generally be getting chances on the PP is a big breakdown on D or a rebound!

I mean, Lindblom had a very nice game and was unlucky not to have 2-3 goals (McDonald robbed him twice) and is also great at making space and finding that split second opening... but I think on one or two even he did not particularly think the pass to him was the best option!

I would like to see them put either Kempe or Lindblom on his wing... they have played with each other on and off since they were all 16, and both play a more 'pro' game than most players on the roster... also both are big guys who are good on the boards and near the net, and are defensively responsible. I love Eriksson Ek (he was one of my early 2015 draft sleepers... I had him as a first round pick from the start of the year believe it or not.) and he can do a good job, but I think Kempe or Lindblom are ofc further along in their development and would be on a more similar wavelength to Willie.

Nylander -- Nylander -- Kempe/Lindblom
Lindblom/Kempe -- Holmstrom -- Eriksson Ek

would still mean they had two dangerous lines, but maybe would seem a bit more balanced. (though tbh the top two lines were both fairly good today... best two lines by some way anyway.)

How's Alex looked as a top 6 option in Sweden's other games? He didn't really do much at ES vs Canada, although on the PP he looks like a threat with that heavy point shot of his

This some cursed ****. Always you guys have to play Canada at the eve of eves and always you get injured by one key guy!?!! How can you even do it!?? A curse??

Just forget those precomp scrimmages with Canada in the future, plz. I lost my man in the pool and you lost the puck carrying D cracking points. Too bad. :shakehead

so Olofsson seems like the most obvious cut. Too bad about Aho :(

If he'd been taken out by a hit, maybe this would be a good point, but when you try to block a clearing attempt and get injured by the puck, I'm sorry to say that one's not on us. That kind of thing could have happened in an intra-squad scrimmage to a guy wearing a non contact jersey.

I know I know. But the fact is it did NOT happened. And what is this - the third same kind of incident in three consecutive years?!? Incredible.

Ofc I am not blaming anybody but but curse and cursing the BAD - "LUCK"!!

Didn't you lose 3 D in a pre-tournment game against Russia in Ufa? I remember Sweden having to rely heavily on a 17 year old Hagg and a young D corps.

Also the fact that Sweden are using 5 forwards on the PP. I think it would have been better to bring Kylington/Andersson even if they would be used in a limited role, would have made the Aho loss more manageable.

What are your thoughts on Ras Andersson and Kylington? Would either of them have been upgrades, in your opinion?

I know Englund or AOM wont play pp2, so who will? Is it Larsson or Petersson? Or maybe five forwards?
I think Pettersson solidified himself as the point man on PP2. No contest really. Larsson might play as the LD, but I think they should rest him for 5on5 where they more than ever will need his puck moving abilities.

I think the two forward cuts will be Karlsson and Olofsson. It makes the most sense.
If they had doubts about Vejdemo, Asplund and Grundström, they have earned their spots imo. Vejdemo especially had a very strong game. And Lööke and Ehn were probably locks before, but you never know. The rest are probably quite secure.

Nylander Nylander Eriksson-Ek
Lindblom Holmström Kempe
Timashov Forsbacka-Karlsson Grundström
Asplund Ehn Vejdemo
Lööke

thats the curse. If down and out by a hit tjen it would be by the hand of. As it is now its like a curse. It just happens bad things to team Sweden for some reason. Glad he's alive.

I am missing Kylington. I think his skillset and mobility is needed, Andersson is a righty which is something the team lacks. I'd take him on the team as well. Not sure they are upgrades but they got things we lack.
