WJC: 2016 — Finland Roster Talk

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
Only players for Finns whose been good are Laine Aho and Puljujärvi.
Rest of the team aren't themselves Rantanen has no clue how to be a captain and leader.

Kapanen is 99% bust Hintz is mediocre center who can't even win a faceoffs.
Jalonen stands behind the bench like stone-gargoyle he clearly thinks that how much money Jokerit KHL team will pay him next season.

Right now our young lions hasn't no national pride and no honor
This team isn't gold medal caliber.

If we'll play like 5 year old little boys in next games against Slovaks and Czechs we don't win group B.
It means that Finland will face USA / Canada or Sweden in quarterfinals and then is goodbye for world junior gold in our home ice.

And my fellow countrymens in here hfboards i wanna say this.
When i said earlier offence wins games defence and goaltending wins championships i meant this what happen tonight.

Right now we have a offence but no defence and no goaltending
We have too much average dmens in our team ( especially Keskitalo,Tuulola and Niku)

Mikkola and Sopanen are big boys but unfortunately TOO SOFT in compete this level.
We need serious size ( Niemelainen,Felixson etc) in defensive end next U20 WJC's.

Tonight's melt down was unacceptable fiasco.
If our lions tournament ends quarterfinals Jalonen has NO BUSINESS to coach our national junior teams never again.

So can we have our best faceoff man Saarela taking faceoff's next game? Just some idiotic coaching decisions by Jalonen.

Doubleyou-tea-ehf? Because of a ten minute meltdown our world has suddenly collapsed? For the sake of the so-called frigg, stop being so Finnish, please. Finland was superb for the first 30 minutes, the game could've been like 7-1.

I'd say give these lines one more game to get going, and if nothing happens, then make changes. Considering games this far:

Laine-Aho-JP
Repo-Saarela-Rantanen
Siikonen-Nättinen-Kapanen
Hintz-Lammikko-Björkqvist

Sopanen-Saarijärvi
Juolevi-Tuulola
Niku-Mikkola
Keskitalo

Kähkönen

Actually, Kähkönen should, no - he must start next game. Veini was disappointing tonight. Especially the fifth goal was a horror show. Should've changed the netminder after the third Russian goal.

Total collapse after that SHG.. PK was weak and it was the main reason we lost. Vehviläinen wasn't good, but wasn't the only reason we lost.

USA, Canada or Sweden? I prefer Canada or Sweden.

The offence is pretty sick for us. Game was lost because of sloppy play and also the puck bounced for Russia's favor a little bit.

In order for us to win this tourney we need our defense to start working. I'm not worried about our chances. Also there's no room for these guys to start floating like they did when Russia scored the PK goal.

The offense is not yet sick for us, 1 line socred 3 goals, that's not going to happen every game, lots of bad chemistry.

I have no idea which one of Swe/Can/USA I'd prefer, bad situation.

Line-by-line thoughts (original lines):

FORWARDS:
Rantanen - Hintz - Kapanen
Three no-shows. Rantanen is just a shadow of himself, don't know if he's tired, unmotivated or what. Hintz has been a non-factor, and Kapanen one of the biggest disappointments once again.

Laine - Aho - Puljujärvi
Only line that can continuously create chances. Disappeared among the rest of the team in the 3rd period. I like Laine's aggressiveness, and Puljujärvi's tendency to shoot.

Repo - Nättinen - Saarela
Saarela has played two good games, best forward outside of the 2nd line so far. Repo played well against Belarus, not so well tonight. Nättinen was quite awful, and overall the 3rd line didn't work.

Björkqvist - Siikonen - Lammikko

4th line could've played more minutes. Like Siikonen's game behind the net and in the corners, created couple scoring opportunities from there.

D-MEN & GOALIE
Keskitalo - Saarijärvi
Why is Keskitalo in first pairing? Two "own goals" tonight, and hasn't played that well even in Mestis. Saarijärvi is raw, good skater, but seems nervous with the puck. With Detroit's normal prospect development curve, he's at least 5-6 years away from NHL.

Juolevi - Tuulola
Juolevi made some mistakes, but he's still the best D-man. Tuulola is like smaller Jani Hakanpää.

Mikkola - Niku
Mikkola doesn't look like a Liiga player. Awful skater, and horrible with puck. Niku isn't the most talented guy, but he isn't a big liability either.

Sopanen
Why couldn't they just pick Vaakanainen to get some WJC experience? Or anyone else but Sopanen. Didn't play much, but there's a reason for that.

Vehviläinen
Has too many Wallinheimo-ish characteristics. Too aggressive and is often out of position. Kaapo will get his chance in next match.

Nice one Tuulola

This whole home tournament hype always turns against us. I mean, a non-stop camera at the locker room for a kids tournament? Ugh. Also, I hate that bald man yelling on my TV, on Yle, creeping behind the players' bench. What is the purpose of him exactly?

I don't know about others but the only thing I took from your post is peace of mind and thankfulness. Namely over the fact that you don't have any say on anything that happens in Finnish hockey.

I thought it was some kind of stand they hang the goalie gloves on to dry. Get the picture?:sarcasm:

 It's weird since Yle actually has good guy for that job in Saarinen. Kunnas is just pathetic.

C'mon people, lets not overreact to one bad period for Finland or couple of bad games for Rantanen. Need I remind you that a guy named Rasmus Ristolainen had a pretty weak tournament in '14 before the final two games. Rantanen will get his game going, trust me.

This is probably the best result for Kähkönen, now he gets to start pressure free as the go-to #1 guy. I think his play will suit us better, that stickwork..
Vehviläinen blows a bit too hot or cold, in u18's he almost lost us the semi-final, then almost won us the final. If he gets to the big show then its through the long trek. Kähkönen is a bit more steady, I think this team needs that steadiness.

Jalonen should've been able to make at least some adjustments during the game... Aho-Nättinen PK unit kept getting scored on and he kept sending them out, and then coincidentally once it's Aho in the box they manage to kill the penalty. Vehviläinen should've also been pulled at some point, a few of those goals were quite soft IMO. The first line isn't doing anything productive either, and alternatives should be explored... Just a bad bad game overall, hopefully they can improve.

Kapanen was the best part of that first line and I really want Kaapo Kähkönen to play the next game. I lost confidence on Vehviläinen in the Switzerland game and today confirmed it, so Kähkönen deserves his chance. Kähkönen did fine vs USA.
