Doesn't matter if they're late 96s, IIHF rules are different from draft.

It's why the US couldn't take Demko, he's a late 95.

I know, that is why I am saying it is a shame they are late 96's. (and implying that if they were a few months younger or the rule lined up with the draft they would be eligable)

I don't see those players you've listed as being an improvement on this season's defense. Chycrun and Fabbro have high end skill but they'll also be young and at their first tournament (if Fabbro makes it) - and 18 year old d-men typically aren't impact players.

Of course, a large part of the problem on this team is the coaching, so it's difficult to get a read on how well they'd play if the defense was employed properly.

The 2015 draft was really strong at forward for Canada and those will be the 19 year olds, so I think that will really help the team. And if next year's defense is coached properly, it might not be an issue.

Yeh, this D has underperformed considering the talent level of the players.

Chabot -- Juulsen
Lauzon -- Meloche
Chychrun -- Roy
Bean/Bear/Fabbro

(assuming the guys in prime position for next year are still in such a position next year) is not exactly an awful D though... and could still realistically contend for being the ~2nd best D in the tourney depending on how players develop.

Oh my bad. I didn't mean to insinuate you didn't know your stuff, more so that I had read your statement wrong.

Why is Perlini stapled to the top-6 despite his net-negative return so far in this tourney (and OHL season)? Why is Lowry the coach of this team? Why are Philly prospects + Beauvillier playing so few minutes? Why is our PP so ineffectual? Why have our players been hogging pucks and playing largely individualistic games?

Anyone? Especially curious re. Perlini whose stature in the lineup I am really struggling to rationalize...

So, unless something odd happens tomorrow, NYE mean nothing.

Sweden will finish first - win, lose or draw against Canada. The U.S. second. Canada 3rd. It's the other pool that's still interesting.

Lowry is coach based on winning Gold last year. Not really any point in replacing him until he falters.

Perlini has been underwhelming for sure, he seems lost on the big ice.

There's also a chance some of the later round defenseman picks have a solid showing the rest of this season + the beginning of next and get a chance at camp.

Groulx was the coach last year, not Lowry.

Perlini didn't play a shift in the 3rd today.

Yep. Bear is certainly on track to be one such guy.

Being a Flyers fan it would be nice if our undrafted free agent signing Philippe Myers pushed for a spot on the squad next year... been great in the Q this season and is Lauzon's D partner, and a righty. Long-shot but is 6'5, 210lbs and a good skater, also played in super-series this year.

Ethan Bear
Philippe Myers
Guillame Brisebois
Brendan Guhle
Kyle Capobianco
Matt Spencer
Mitchell Vande Sompel
Parker Wotherspoon
Connor Hobbs
Tate Olsen

are 10 1997 born 2015 draft guys who are not 'as' obviously on track for the team as some of the other mentioned... but are very likely on Canada's radar for camp invites, and have either been on Canada U18 teams or Super series teams. Maybe 1 or possibly 2 of them end up on the team next year if some of them develop really well.

You seemingly always get a player on the D who developed so well they passed some of the guys taken in the first few rounds by the WJC 18 months after their draft.

The problem with Team Canada isn't the lines...it's the style of play.

Too many players holding puck to long, no give & go's, no team play just a bunch of individuals trying to get their ice time and puck touches.

Changing lineups isn't solving the problem.

Puck Hogs, Long Shifts will lead to what you saw today from Team Canada.

As a Canucks fan I really have only been tracking Olsen and Brisebois but both are having good seasons, Olsen especially. I believe he has 10 points in 11 games the month of december in PG.

Yeh, both have previous with Canada as well. It would not be too surprising for one of them to make the team.

Along with:

Chabot
Juulsen
Lauzon
Roy
Meloche

those ten are the only other 2015 draft 97's I think have a realistic shot at next years team.

I agree w. This. Especially the long very long shifts. Unnecessary.

good points..

The breakout and transition game feels like a very weak point as well. Too many guys who are stationary, with one flashing player getting the puck low and trying to either lug it all the way to the offensive zone or send it up to a guy who is standing still at the blue/red line and is closed out immediately.

I hate this playing system, I hate Lowry as a coach also.
1- Players are playing too far from each other for an ice of this size.
2- Lowry changes the lines at every shift and players can't find chemistry
3-Lowry keeps putting Chartier and Quenneville even if they are incredibly bad when they are on the ice.
4-Konecny is probably the Canadian player who shows more heart and dedication for his country, but Lowry keeps him on the bench anyway.
5-Sanheim creates good chances when he's on the ice (especially on the PP), but Lowry keeps him on the ice anyway.
6- The team PP is horrible. They are playing a NA ice Power Play. I mean, players don't move and are too far from each other. They are playing what we call a Shooting PP...but they don't shoot. Their is almost no passing lanes available, they don't move the puck enough and they are not using open areas as much as they should. They are so skilled and their is so much space on the ice, so normally they should be able to make something happen.
7-There's no great passing plays and stuff like that. They seem to be all self-centered and they are doing too many long shifts.
8- More importantly, the players seem disinterested about the tournament. In the pas few years, you could see the passion of the Canadian players and you notice that they were playing for their Country. This year, it seems like they don't realize every Canadien citizen is cheering for them.

Bingo, there is 'zero' movement, no passing. Team Canada PP is just an extension of the 5on5 play with even less movement. They get in an umbrella and then just pass it around, no one moves across the crease, no rotations, never once tried to set up behind the net.

The one Hicketts goal was a cut through the middle for a quick goal, but hey, why bother to actually play smart hockey...let me see how long I can hold the puck and dangle around people to look good.

I would like them to try and make the lines in a way that compliments the diverse player talents. The enter-the-zone-cycle-forever style they're doing right now is way too easy to shut down.

Beauvillier - Barzal - Marner <--- excellent cycle players with an equal threat to score
Crouse - Strome - Virtanen <--- super speedy wingers that can score off the rush, or make room for Strome to do what he's gotta do

I would like them to try Virtanen at the faceoff circle as I discussed for the PP with Gauthier as the screen. Also, I would like Strome and Marner each to anchor their own PP unit to try and spread out the talent.

Exactly! If we are all able to notice this, how Lowry can close his eyes on that?

It looks like the 2013 team. Guy gets the puck and go for a skate, then gives it to the next guy for his turn.
