Up a tree
I liked Chabot's positioning. He moved pretty well with the flow of the game. When on the point he adjusted left or right to make it easier for the deeper puck carrier to pass it back. When the front/middle opened up he went there a couple of times. No one passed to him the times I saw him go to the centre but it showed he has an offensive mindset but only when the risk was low. Offensively he looks like he'll be fine maybe a Ceci or better type. I find it hard to properly judge any D's defensive capabilities when I only saw him play against the Czech's. They are not a big pressure team. As 5 man units Canada dominated almost every shift. The Russians would have been a much better test to see how he is on the defensive side of the puck because they can create more high tempo 1 on 1, 2 on 1 and backdoor situations.

Brilliant skater. Great skater is an understatement. His skating is so good he can make risky plays and still recover, not at the level of Karlsson but it's a rare asset. Has a real good head for the game, he plays the game to his strength and although he need physical maturity, he doesn't put himself in those situations where it becomes a concern over the course of a game. Excellent passer as well.

Thank u very much for the video compilation my friend, is there anyway you can do one with Colin White? I think he could be just as impressive to watch him with the little plays.

My pleasure! Unfortunately HS did not show the US games and the only things I could find were extremely low quality clips. I will be putting up Chabot's shifts from last night's game though and likely some stuff from the actual WJC should they make the team.

Does Chabot make the team? 7 D predictions anyone?

I think:

Hicketts
Fleury
Sanheim
Juulson
Dermott
Hickey
Chabot
Dunn

All have a good chance at the team. Chabot was on the outside looking in before the camp and season, but he has definitely jumped ahead of guys like Carrier, McKeowen and Roy.

Among LHD, he is in tough though. Hicketts, Sanheim, Fleury, Dermott and Hickey are all lefties as well.

Thank you for doing this. Chabot skates very well and has offensive instincts; however, he seems to take some high risks by jumping into the play and leaving his D position.

I think Dunn might move up a spot or two. He was engaged in all three zones last night (from what I saw). I have no idea if that's how he always plays, but last night he showed some hunger out there.

Not sure about the others....I only really focused on Dunn and Chabot. Both of them definitely have some nice qualities the team needs.

Don't you think it's normal for a junior with offensive talents?

You can't teach much offense, defense you can.

Chlapik is a beast. Seemed like he was creating every Czech chance. Also he WANTED the puck badly. That's a good sign for his offensive game. From what little i've seen he has great top 6 upside. Will be interesting to see how many he scores this season? 90? 100? I think its possible.

As for Chabot, great vision and great mobility. The two most important things for a great defense man imo.

He and Sprong will both Challenge 100 together this season.

Chabot is such a smart hockey player I see so many brilliant subtle moves that even some of his teammates can't keep up with. Excellent skater, head up, very good pinches, offensively gifted, great mind in all 3 zones.

Chlapik looked real good in just the viewings he was on ice with Chabot.

Hrm should I do one for Chlapik? It would be the same games though, just focused on Chlapik's shifts.

That video was great! What I loved the most from what I saw is that he was defensively conscious when he made his pinches and kept it simple. He was always back in position and was always covering his man in front of the net. Very sound positionally. Will not be the one cleaning out the front of the net but is always where he needs to be with an active stick. He'll likely gain more confidence with added muscle and will take the body more in the corners but even then it really isn't a big need for Chabot since he's really smart and thinks the game and plays a passive defensive style which let's the play come to him while at the same time he cuts time and space just by being positionally sound. He is so smooth that you barely notice that he is making a pinch and next thing you know he's in the OZ.

Chlapik is currently my favourite player from this draft crop. He is dominant and from the two games I saw against the Czechs he was hands down the best player on their side. Note that this is a guy who has never trained before, I can only imagine when he adds some muscle and loses a little of that baby fat, he'll be flying.

I liked what I saw from Chlapik, but a couple of caveats, from someone who attended both games. First, he was the best player on a bad Czech team, but he wasn't dominant. What he did do was manage to create some quality scoring chances for himself, something no other Czech player really did. He has a knack for stripping pucks in the offensive zone, and the sense to hold onto the puck that extra few strides to work into a better scoring position.

Second, I don't know if he'll ever be "flying". At this level, his skating was noticeably below-average, especially later into shifts. He'll have to put in a lot of work just to get it to NHL average.
