I think I should be clear, I like the CHL idea, I think it could be very popular in europe, especially high import countries like Germany and Austria where DEL and EBEL teams maybe can make it to the next round, those are big markets and the tournament really could be something. Trying to get significant market share in the US though is throwing money away. Bundesliga and EPL are better than MLS and bundesliga fox was a complete failure, while EPL nbc wasn't successful either and that's with the existence of a Hispanic population that traditionally loves soccer. NHL is still better than the KHL and CHL teams, and it's the local league. Get significant share in europe first and then maybe a marketing push in America would be feasible but going after the American market this early on would be throwing money away.

It also seems to me that fans of the second tier league teams get more excited for this tournament than fans of teams from the top leagues, so it wouldn't make much sense to restrict the tournament to only Russian/Swedish/Finnish teams. If you do that, you might as well not have the tournament at all.

But what do you want to do? This leagues(KHL,SHL,LIIGA) are too strong for the rest of Europe. Only some Top-Teams from Swiss(maybe Davos,Fribourg) an Czech(Sparta Prag,Liberec) are competitive enough.

Don't see any major difference compared to the soccer Champs league, in this regard.

Fineuh, I'll explain one by one.
1. Yes because the streaming market for tv shows has made watching live TV shows unimportant, this has caused a spike in the value of sports tv contracts because I can Netflix every show of a season on my computer but watching old games is very unappealing and on a small screen like a computer, even less so.
2. Some don't like the point system, most don't like the world cup, but hockey fans in the us, they aren't fans of the sport of hockey, they're fans of the red wings, or bruins, or maple leafs, the amount of the market that would turn to lower quality overseas hockey just because it's less gimmicky is very very small.
3. Soccer has not become popular in the US. Relative to itself, soccer is growing, and relative to itself Rugby is growing even faster. After the world cup there's always a fervor for soccer which translates to a few people tuning into some mls games and a few new teams in the mls started a few new and small fanbases. This was marketed as extensive growth of soccer by the soccer industry but less than 2 years later, soccer fever is dead once again. The sport will continue to grow in it's niche but basketball especially is a complete monopoly over the east and west coast, and football rules the south. Even if soccer was growing super fast however I don't see how soccer growing fast makes americans and canadians more interested in global sports. I don't have CSN but I don't see international sports very often at all on american sports, and now that nbc did a contract with the EPL 2 years back I can watch on EPL game a week on Saturday before noon during the season. You're basically saying if the MLS ran a tournament with the NASL and had a no gimmicks format then people in England would start watching American soccer, perhaps a few would but the market affect would be small at largest.

Pretty much this. The mentality of USA and EU fans totally differ in sports. In USA, it's more like an entertainment and activitiy in general. You can shut down a franchise when it's not worthy having anymore or simply move it to somewhere else. Of course all sports organizations are kind of companies that are looking to make money nowadays but still "the team" means a lot for European fans. They treat their local team as a part of their town and life. Djurgarden-AIK games are not like Bruins-Canadiens. For one, many people get excited so that they can't even sleep at night. For the other, meh, just a "classical" and slightly more important NHL game.

For this reason, I believe NHL should stay out of any Euro organization because it would not be profitable neither for NHL nor Europe. The league systems, the fan and sports culture are totally different in USA and EU. Moreover, there is a difference in level too. I mean, why would a Bruins fan be excited about a game against, let's say, Vitkovice? Who the hell knows or cares about Czech teams in USA?

:D:D:D Speaking strictly about hockey traditions there are some clubs here which could be, with some good PR, attractive. Sparta has some potential with its name and history, they already played against Rangers and as I scanned some websites, rangers fans who catched it didnt think they are bunch of loosers. Vitkovice do not have any potential, except they would beat Bruins three time in row, which is immpossible. In fact Vitkovice, Pardubice are maximally on the edge of playoff in CZ, so they are not even on CHL level.

As to cooperation with NHL, I can imagine same format as soccer club championship, or even smaller. KHL, CHL, NHL winner and it should be organize in USA or Canada.

I believe, realistically, we are not that far away from seeing the CHL champ play the KHL champ in some form. Be it a single game or a series to determine the Euro champ. Euro Champ could then play the NHL Stanley Cup winner. Sounds plausible at least and we have seen similar arrangements before, involving the NHL. 3-5 year span at the most?

I did not say this to belittle Czech teams. The thing is, fans in USA don't care about anything out of NHL. Yes, some people could be lured with heavy efforts but I am not so sure if this is worth it. Before all else, travel expenses and timezone difference makes it really difficult to put EU and USA in same pot. Vitkovice was just an example. Make it Adler Mannheim, Frölunda or any other team. Sure, some hockey fans around the globe would definitely watch a Bruins-Frölunda game; but for NHL teams which regularly fill almost 20K arenas, would it be a feasible idea to compete against EU teams? Don't think so.

I believe the focus for EU now should definitely be bringing top teams of the continent together. Maybe then we can think of including USA.

I agree with all of you guys. The economy plays big role. In fact how many teams in CHL are able to survive one match against NHL team? The difference is too big in many aspects, still I believe 4-5 teams could do it and make some surprise.

I would organize it in North America just for below reasons:

I. They can make great marketing for everything
II. It would test attractivity for NA fans
III. NHL team wouldnt have to travel to Europe which would be probably crucial point

Make it sometime in NHL preseason. I can imagine it.... Leadies and gentlemen welcome Frolunda Gothenburgh from hockey power Sweden, bla bla bla, they would defientely find some draft picks in their roster and people would be ok with it, then some russian team, CSKA or SKA would fit best, and it could attract 15000 people per match. Some sponsor could even donate travel expenses for european teams. My only one worry would be about CHL team not being demolished there.

It worked before 1989 when a lot of teams traveled overseas so it could work right now too. I dont think NHL needs to come to Europe. But Europe needs to come to NA to prove that its hockey doesnt suck and worth some attention....Sure if Vitkovice win CHL, we all would be nervous, but imagine if they somehow beat that NHL team overseas, that would legitimate that small tourney for next 4 years.... :D

And sure, NHL team would have loose both matches. Final between two euroteams on NA soil would automatically guarantee next year....

Why is it that some people want to include the NHL in this? It's not like it would become reality and the NHL hates all things international.

The fact that you mentioned this as some kind of an impressive detail tells more than enough about the tournament.

Please point excactly where I said it? It seems you have to really try to grasp to create a negative statement out of a single line of "looks like the final will be sold out" which I gathered from jatkoaika.com posts. I think your post tells more about you.

I think you totally misunderstood his words. He is simply saying that the tournament is still not good enough to attract people - so it becomes an important piece of information to write that it's possibly gonna be sold out. As far as I can understand, it's nothing towards you. The thing he says is not, "Why did you write this?" but instead "The fact that this post is relevant shows why this tournament is not good enough".

Hope I could make myself clear, my English is "out of fuel" at the moment, I can't seem to write properly.

Yes please keep the NHL away from European hockey they will ruined it!!! I just love how European fans celebrate their home club its amazing to see the passion that you guys have. The CHL will grow in something quite amazing im sure just be patient with it it will grow over time. I love to watch it and I love to watch European hockey.

No, he's just another one of those delusional KHL fanboys who think all European club hockey should be ran by KHL/Russians.

There are just two diff. worlds. Everything where you have to pay 120 bucks for ticket would ruin these characteristics.

There is no market in Europe, maybe except Germany, where you can set up franchise as big as NHL frachnise is. So I am not afraid of NHL ruining european hockey. Still one small confrontation would be very helpfull for euro teams and would justify CHL even more.

I am just talking out of box now but why it would be so difficult for all CHL teams to donate travel expensives for CHL winner for USA trip and organize one match with stanley cup winner in NHL preseason? Call it Victoria cup or whatever. CHL would gain such an advantage in rally with KHL about dominating Europe. Especially now when KHL considering expansion to UK.

When have I said that? I preferred watching my team's CHL games over the national league ones but your partiality can be hilarious at times. You wouldn't have mentioned that the final is going to be a sold out if you didn't think that it is somehow surprising or impressive. But hey, I guess it is great that the final will be sold out in a 6 600 seat arena in one of the top hockey markets in the country.

Praise the CHL!

The arena in Oulu is obviously pretty small. So it might be sold out in every league match, I dont know. Still, if I dont know the capacity, when the match is sold out ten days before the date, not smth immpressive, but worth attention...

What partiality? Please give examples? I don't have a horse in this race, I haven't watched a single CHL this season since none have been on free tv and might not even bother looking up a stream. I only post in this topic because people are wrong or KHL fan boys are spreading their usual anti-CHL propaganda with false facts and I correct them with facts just to annoy them. Attendance had been talked about lately in this thread so I saw someone mention at Jatkoaika that it was probably going to be sold out and passed teh infromation forward. If you saw that as some sort of pro-CHL agenda, then you need to get your eyesight checked.

It's not. Average attendance is 5590, capacity 6700ish.

You don't even follow the KHL, yet you are one of the top posters on the subforum. Of these posts, an overwhelming number are negative. Your neutrality can certainly be questioned.

If this was the final of the national championship, or even just an interesting regular season matchup, no one would mention that the game is sold out as it would be something that is considered self-evident. Clearly this is not the case for the final of a tournament that defines itself as the competition for Europe's club-hockey supremacy.

When speaking about attendance, finnish website felt it is important to write an article about attendance of Jokerit and CHL semifinal in Oulu on Jan 19. The result is attendance 9094 (Jokerit) vs 3394 (CHL SF Oulu/Lukko). It is at least interesting that finnish website compared the attendance, who knows why they did it.

Another topic. I am writing it here because I have not able to found better thread for it. There is a battle among Euroleague Basketball and FIBA about elite euro basket competition. Source. Source 1. Euroleague has been there for 15 years (current form) as elite competition in Europe. Euroleague signed 10y deal with IMG last year, which will reform the competition a bit. The Euroleague will be more or less a closed league (there will be one or two free spots, but majority will be created by A licence clubs which play every season). This model is similar to KHL vision (important is vision here). On the other hand there is FIBA which will create rival champions league, which be based on sportive principle. Like CHL in hockey. So I want to say that basketball battle among Euroleague and FIBA reminds me KHL vs CHL battle. Do you feel it is same way? What league/idea (closed one league vs sportive principle) will be more succesfull in future?

Are you saying the issues I've brought up there should not be discussed but rather ignored/shrugged under the carpet? Feel free to list all the so called negative posts that are not related to the way the league is run/expansion plans/club management that also haven't been brought up by posters?

I am not saying that the issues should be ignored but selectively picking only the negatives is what I would describe as partiality.

First off a sold out final indicates strong proof of concept. Conceptually the CHL is a great idea with potential to be a great success. The whole expand into NA thing...just no, that's unfeasible and no one in the CHL is looking at that as they know the economic roadblocks that would keep this from happening. However KHL assimilation into the CHL is very much possible. I'm not a KHL fan boy, I'll be totally honest I watch most Dinamo Riga games but I don't follow any other team. The perception that the KHL is just far and away the 2nd best league behind the NHL and some think it is getting close to the NHL is pretty ridiculous. Steven Siego (Riga) for example has 19 points in 49 games this season after getting only 14 in 53 games for TPS last year. Absolutely other teams can compete with KHL teams, and even if they can't win on any consistent sort of basis it will make for an entertaining spectacle and probably bring more cash into our model. This assimilation makes sense, the concept makes sense, I'll be interested to see if they can iron out the way the money will be split in a way that interests the KHL but this tournament can be very profitable and meaningful within reason (which does mean without involving the NHL).
