Frölunda and Luleå definitely look like the two Swedish teams who put the work in to win this. Too bad for them they played each other in the QF. Frölunda has been pretty clutch so far, fun games vs Dick Axelsson coming.

Really looking forward to it. Hope they move the game to Scandinavium this time. They need to signal to the fans that they take this tourney seriously even if they don't expect a great turnout.

Interested to know if fans from Switzerland are at all excited about the matchup or the tourney now that Davos advanced. Plüss played quite a few seasons in Frölunda so there is an obvious Swiss connection here.

Hope this trend to downplay the importance of the tourney dissipates. Find it more than a bit tedious that fans of the individual leagues seem to compete in how little they care.
I for one will consider Davos one of the absolute best teams in Europe if they manage to beat both Frölunda and Skellefteå.

Heres to one hell of a series!

Why is the attendance so poor. Europeans uninterested in the tournament?

Central Europe has been more interested, Nordics have a fairly congested domestic schedule (especially Finns), meaning if teams have several home games during the week, the fans are likely to pass on one. Kärpät had a home game on Tuesday and Wednesday. Lukko got pretty much their season average and will most likely get more for the semifinal.

OK, interesting. Thanks for response. I always envied the prevalence of tournaments in European hockey. Sure beats the monotony of 68 and 82 game regular seasons in North America.

About 1000 people in Rauma, even with Puljujärvi/Aho playing. This tournament is a joke.

Just Rauma being Rauma. If Lukko aren't playing well, which they haven't for the past couple of months, the fans won't show up. Plus they did have over 3000 against TPS in the last round.

This lack of attendance is highly disturbing.

On the Swiss side, teams say they take this tournament seriously, yet in summer they start training 1 or 2 weeks before it starts. And then they do not allign all players .. but maintain that they take it seriously. Highly questionable.

So, very logically, results are poor and people don't show up.
a classical chain reaction.

I regret it, it would be great to have the same than in Soccer. The best teams meeting ... that would be a thrill for hockey lovers.

So let's hope Davos beats Frolunda. That would sound strange, CHL final without Swedish team.

There can be huge differences between teams within one country. E.g. Kärpät had a full house vs Frölunda last season at this stage. It's likely they'll have close to 5K, if not over, next week.

That's pretty bad, though Lukko does have a home game tomorrow, so that probably affected it a lot.

Actual attendance was 2063 but yeah, two home games in consecutive nights would show even if both were Liiga games. I think they're still making profit from that game.

I don't understand why people in Rauma didn't go see the SF game. It's a game with actual stakes against a relatively interesting opponent, especially from a Finnish perspective, you'd think they would go see that instead of a regular season match against KooKoo today. Baffling.

As was said, they had home games on consecutive days and Lukko fans are known for being fickle and picky. The Liiga game against KooKoo had only 3300 as well.

CHL CEO Martin Baumann told Swedish paper Göteborgs Posten that they intend to reduce the number of teams to 32 and maybe less. Expressen meanwhile reported that even sponsors have requested this. However, it would take place from the 4th season. I assume due to the founding members contract. KHL has also expressed some sort of interest and there will be some exhibition tournament next summer with clubs from KHL and CHL.

I'd like to ask you guys, especially to Finns and Swedes, if semi-finalists of CHL care about this tournament. I mean, is this profitable or important for them? Well, anyone would probably care when they are in second leg of semi-finals but I still want to know how motivated the teams are.

I was planning to watch Kärpät-Lukko today but I may not be available at the time of game, so if you think this is a game worth watching, I will try making the arrangement for it.

Davos was also very serious about it, they even tried to rest some players during the Spengler Cup.
Didn't look like it on the scoreboard but they were very serious about the semi final...
Not anymore I assume :(

Kärpät have been very serious about European club competitions for ages (never won, but made finals in previous versions). Lukko as well since they've gotten far before. I know it doesnt' show much in their attendance but fans in Rauma are extremely picky (only time they sell out their arena is when they play Ässät). I already linked an article where Lukko people said they're making a decent profit from their home games.
