Does Bailey's hot start in Kitchener put him back on the radar? He wasn't invited to the NJEC, even after being invited in 2013, but he has 27% of Kitchener's goals to date, and everyone who has watched him has given glowing reports. Given his RW position, he'll have a tough time cracking a lineup with guys like Erne and Tuch in the equation, but Bailey looks like he's putting it all together. He's even one of Kitchener's top PKers.

He's not for Canada in international tourney ? He played for Ontario in U17.

It wasn't an IIHF sanctioned tournament. Cassels played in the ALL-American Top Prospects Game and was invited to the U.S. WJC Camp this summer (couldn't play due to illness). I expect him to get an invite to the December camp and likely make the team when it's announced.

I think Bailey has a very good shot at making the December camp.

We're about midway to the final camp roster. Here's my current prediction:

Forwards (x17):

Justin Bailey
Anders Bjork
Cole Cassels
J.T. Compher
Kyle Connor
Chase De Leo
Jack Eichel
Adam Erne
Hudson Fasching
John Hayden
Dylan Larkin
Auston Matthews
Michael McCarron
Sonny Milano
Tyler Motte
Nick Schmaltz
Alex Tuch

Defense (x11):

Louie Belpedio
Will Butcher
Brandon Carlo
Ryan Collins
Anthony DeAngelo
Jack Dougherty
Michael Downing
Anthony Florentino
Noah Hanifin
Ian McCoshen
Zach Werenski

Goalies (x3):

Evan Cowley
Thatcher Demko
Alex Nedeljkovic

Notes:
  • Lots of tough choices here. Starting with goalies I think it's down to Cowley vs. Halverson for the final spot.
  • On defense one player is missing from the final 8 that were at the summer camp and that's Santini as he will miss the tournament with injury.
  • The new additions on defense for me are DeAngelo, Hanifin and Werenski. In last year's December camp they only brought along 9 d-men but I think they bring a bigger group this go around, although I wouldn't be surprised to see them leave DeAngelo home.
  • The two missing forwards from my group that were on the final summer camp roster are Anthony Louis and Dominic Turgeon. Louis is too one dimensional for this deep of a forward group (and that dimension isn't needed when guys like Eichel, Milano, Schmaltz, etc. are better than him everywhere) and I've never been all that impressed with Turgeon. I hope they decide to take a look at other players.
  • Not counting Adam Erne (injury) and Cole Cassels (illness) who would have been at summer camp, I think they should take another look at Bailey (not invited to summer camp) and McCarron (early cut) as it's tough to ignore their starts this year, especially the latter.

What are your thoughts? Tough decisions all around.

Your list looks good to me.

They have plenty of good options up front so the coaching staff should be able to put together a great group there. It's deep enough that I could see some surprising/unpopular cuts being made. It'll come down to whether or not they want to bring as many skill players as possible or look to fill more specific roles.

Goaltending is pretty straight forward and I think your choices will make it with Demko getting first crack at the starting spot.

Defense is where the big decisions will have to be made.

Santini is not really a game breaker but he would have been a leader here and his loss is magnified by the fact that there's really no player in the pool that can replace what he brings when he's on his game. I think the closest they could get is bringing in one of Carlo or Collins with the directive of playing a defensively-oriented, physical game. I wasn't overly impressed with Carlo's play in the summer and Collins is a bit of a gentle giant IMO but they both have the size to contend with a team like Canada on the small ice.

I'd like to see DeAngelo get a look but I think there's a healthy amount of competition for him as an offensive-minded righty. If his defensive game has improved I could see him beating out one of Dougherty, Belpedio, Florentino etc. for a spot. The amount of experimentation with forwards on the powerplay at the summer camp could work against him if the coaching staff liked what they saw enough there. I could see some beauty passing plays if he got some time out there with Eichel though.

I feel Hanifin will be there but if he makes the team I'm not sure he'll be the leader I thought he might be able to be before the season started. His impact might be similar to Cam Fowler's on the '10 team where Fowler was a bit more conservative/reliable than involved/flashy. I'd be satisfied with that.

Here's how I could see it shaking out...

Motte-Eichel-Fasching

Motte seems to be off to a slow start but it's hard to forget his chemistry with Eichel at the summer camp. It's possible Tuch could be up here. Fasching has looked good to me this year and I like the idea of him playing a major role on the team.

Milano-Matthews-Compher

I could see Larkin being switched around with Matthews here but I like the idea of giving the latter as big a role as he can handle. With Compher's work ethic and Milano's skill this could be a good secondary scoring line.

Schmaltz-Larkin-Erne

Erne is a bit of an x-factor for me given he wasn't at the summer camp but he could be much improved from last year's tourney where he was a disappointment. I don't know that Schmaltz is a sure thing but I love his skill.

Tuch-De Leo-Hayden

Tuch could easily be on a higher line than this but this is a reflection of depth and he's the one best suited for the role I see this line playing. De Leo is small but I like his energy and Hayden to me has the edge over a more hyped player such as McCarron based on their respective play at the summer camp. I like the look of this group as a skilled grinding line

Cassels

Cassels is a bit of an unknown to me but he seems like a viable utility option who could be plugged in anywhere.

McCoshen-Dougherty

I hope for a much better showing from McCoshen this year. Dougherty is well rounded if unspectacular and to me represents the safe option compared to DeAngelo.

Butcher-Collins

Would look a lot better with Santini but it is what it is. Butcher will be leaned on and I hope he rises to the occasion.

Hanifin-Belpedio

Could be a good pair and get more playing time than being listed here as the third pair would indicate depending on the play of the others.

Florentino

Another well rounded player who could be plugged in anywhere.

Demko
Nedeljkovic
Cowley

Demko gets the starting job with Ned getting at least a game and potentially taking over depending upon Demkos play.

Good insight and choices, Cagney. I think the differences in everyone's predicted final team and/or lines will really highlight how much there is to choose from this go around, especially up front. Possibilities seem endless. If I were to choose a team for the tournament based on my predicted camp roster and make lines this is what I would want to see to start:

Forwards:

Milano - Eichel - Tuch

This line had too much chemistry for two years not to start with it in my opinion. I know Osiecki talked about having a '95 on every line if possible (hence Motte) but I go for the instant chemistry first. If it's not there or they want to balance things out a bit then switch Milano with another LWer as necessary.

Erne - Compher (C) - Fasching

Listed second but the prototypical crash-and-bang USA line that will wear teams out every game, especially if Erne shows up this tournament.

Larkin - Matthews - Schmaltz

Offensive line with underrated balance that would likely do some damage.

Connor - De Leo - Motte

"Fourth" line with tons of pace but also a lot of skill.

Hayden

You could really go with a lot of different guys here but I imagine they intrigued by a well-rounded player with size like Hayden.

Defense:

Hanifin - Belpedio

Two best d-men from the U-18s paired together with Belpedio moving up a pairing to fill in for the injured Santini.

McCoshen - Florentino

McCoshen needs to improve from last year's tournament showing, especially with Santini sidelined.

Butcher - Carlo

I think it's more likely that Collins makes it over Carlo but I've never been high on Collins, although he apparently had a good summer camp.

Werenski

I haven't been able to see Michigan yet but folks have been raving about Werenski. I still have my doubts that USAH would take two underage d-men, even if they should. I haven't seen Dougherty yet this year but I've never been a huge Downing fan (even if he did improve a lot last year) and I'm not sold DeAngelo will even get an invite. I'd guy with the high upside in the #7 spot if it's my choice and that's either Werenski or DeAngelo.

Goalies:

Demko
Nedeljkovic
Cowley

I take it USAH wants Demko to grab the role and he'd likely have the first crack at it with Nedeljkovic missing the summer camp. I think this is a tournament where both guys could see action till the elimination games start.

Notes:
  • With Cassels accepting an invite for Team Canada for the Super Series I didn't consider him. If I was USAH I'd stop considering him as well.
  • I hope USAH opts for skilled players because there's an abundance of them.

at this point I simply cannot see how Carlo doesn't make this squad especially now with Santini out.

Carlo has looked way too good since eval camp, and his size, skill, and all around play will make him a top guy on this blue line. top 30 pick likely as well.

it is also pretty crazy how Matthews is now a lock on everyones roster. even with the depth and skill we have he is still easily a top 9 guy here...that speaks volumes for his skill and talent.

From the International Tournaments thread that doesn't get a lot of attention.

Any chance Bracco gets an invite to the main camp?

I'd say it's not likely just because of how deep the team is up front but he's certainly done everything you could ask of him though and would be a justified choice if he's there. If Schmaltz's injury takes him out of contention that certainly helps Bracco's chances though.

Do you guys think Cassels makes it?

He hurt his chances by joining Canada for the SSS. If I was USAH I wouldn't consider him anymore but I'd imagine they'll touch basis with him after his games and see where he's at.
