When you host the tournament you kinda get to decide what teams you want to play, no? Wasn't it a cakewalk for the U.S when they hosted it in Buffalo some years ago?

All depends on how the year before ends: their standings. It's some kind of system with like 1,5,7,11 in one group, or something like that. If you start to look at each one, I'm sure you will see a trend.

I think, and don't take this is a fact, that for each year the 1st, 4th, 5th, 8th and 9th from the WJC prior are in one group. That leaves the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, and 10th, which is the promoted team, to fill in the next group.

Eichel was trying too hard. Plus he isn't wearing a cage and McDavid is, so is Eichel a year older than McDavid? If that's the case then Eichel was really trying too hard.

Eichel's a '96, and McDavid's a '97. The way Eichel controlled the play essentially every time he was out there was quite impressive. I think it was only natural that he tried to force things a few times, as it was basically his introduction to Canadian fans, and he wanted to show exactly what he has. It's just human nature, especially at his age.

Is it just me, or does this happen every year? It always seems like Canada gets a cakewalk game to open the tourney and the USA gets a tough one and I'm not sure which is better, but this is sticking out in my mind for some reason.

As far as the games themselves, the US in 2013 stared slow in games and early in the tournament. I see this years team picking up steam as the tourney roles on after line combos get worked out.

Everyone has regional bias during international play :D

I was thinking the same thing. Once the iron out the kinks, look out. I think what will tell the tale in the Canada game is how well the American D are able to handle Canada's overall depth at forward. Will be fascinating to see the likes of Eichel-Tuch-Milano (I hope) line against the likes of Canada's D. Their overall feel for each other should give the Canadian D some fits.

That second paragraph is correct

Take care of business against Germany, then make sure you dont let down on Slovakia. Gets us top 2 finish and a straight shot to a medal game.

personally, it should be Milano - Eichel - Tuch and be done with it..

I don't get why they aren't going to it more, I understand balancing out lines, but the chemistry these three have is what you dream of in a short tourney like this.

On a side note, Anthony DeAngelo impressed the hell out of me. His play was physical, and always putting pressure on the opposition. It wasn't flawless, but this kid made a statement as to why he should have been there last year and that he is here to be the real deal.

I agree 100% that it should be Milano-Eichel-Tuch. They are trying to balance out Matthews with Milano but that first line would be so much more effective if they would just put Milano in with the guys he played 100+ games with in the last two year. If Matthews is as good as Eichel then he will figure out how to work with whoever he is given. Eichel figured it out last year.

Also, loved DeAngelo and Butcher yesterday. Werenski has impressed the hell out of me this year. He has definitely closed the gap between him and Hanifin. Eichel is just on a whole other level then everyone else except McDavid for 2015.

Finns lost today to Slovakia

McDavid will never get to play in this tournament as an 18 yr old

Eichel should be dominating

Eichel is only 3 months older....He won't be playing in the tournament next year either. Also, thought Eichel was better than McDavid yesterday. At least he's on the board...

? Okay....

The insecurity about the McDavid/Eichel comparisons among quite a few Canadians is pretty intense. They're both terrific hockey players. Relax and enjoy them. Neither player will be playing here next year, and they are part of the same draft class. Don't let the comparisons get you too flustered.

I was really unimpressed with Milano and hope he improves. I'm not sure if he was nervous but despite flubbing a few chances (he was a bit unlucky with the post as well) he looked really weak on his stick and lost a ton of 50-50 battles.

Shot in the dark...there was an article posted recently, I forget the source, that gave an in depth roster overview with paragraphs about each player...any chance someone here knows which one I'm talking about? Saw it a few days ago but can't locate it now...

Halverson gets the start in net with Nedeljkovic backing up.

Milano will be reunited with Eichel and Tuch. De Leo takes Milano's spot on the second line. Louis moves to 4th line with Compher & Hayden, Wood the 13th forward.

USA Lines vs. GER (8 p.m. ET): Milano-Eichel-Tuch; De Leo-Matthews-Schmaltz; Motte-Larkin-Fasching; Louis-Compher-Hayden; Wood.

USA D pairings vs. GER: Butcher-Carlo; Hanifin-McCoshen; Werenski-DeAngelo; Collins. Goalies: Halverson, Nedeljkovic. Scratched: Demko.
