eichel and deangelo had more chippiness/physicality then i expected. eichel was finishing his checks more tonight then ive seen in other games. deangelo was billed as a guy that could be overwhelmed physically but i didnt see that and he was throwing some good checks in the game.

So I was watching the USA-FIN game and every time I heard Will Butcher's name, I thought of Bill the Butcher from Gangs of New York. Therefore,

Game 1:
  • Eichel tried to do a little too much. Still had a good game, but it seemed like he was trying to do it all by himself for most of the game. Filthy shot in the SO.
  • Butcher is going to need to be the staunch defender from this 7 man unit. You could really see the impact of no Santini in this game
  • They tried a couple different players on the Eichel-Tuch line. I saw Wood, De Leo, and Louis. I think they either need to go back to Motte, or even move up Milano and move Compher up as well.
  • You saw the best the PP could be, and the worst it could be. Really liked the first few PPs. Great puck movement, quality chances, just couldn't finish them. But conversely, the last few PPs had waaay too much perimeter play. I really didn't like the setup, and it didn't really seem like there was a plan. The wings would keep rotating but nothing would come from that. It was rough. And again, the last few PPs seemed like Eichel was trying to do a bit too much. Really disappointing 4 on 3 in OT.
  • Really liked the PK. The forwards particularly. Larkin, Fasching, Compher played phenomenal.
  • Louis had some nice moments
  • Didn't really notice Carlo, which I guess is a good thing.
  • Werenski has a bomb of a shot.
  • DeAngelo played very well. There were some times he got beat, but he did recover nicely.
  • A lot of sloppy play. Maybe credit it to the fins game plan or play style, but man it was a rough game to watch for the most part

We certainly didn't have our best game, but a win's a win. This is probably a good first game to have as it shows the guys how tough the tourney can be. After rolling through the pre-tourney and knowing they beat the fins badly in Lake Placid, may have given this team a false sense of bravado. I think you'll see them come back strong against the Germans.

Agree with much of your thoughts. Thought Hanifin was very good. Larkin was really solid. Eichel, Schmaltz and Milano were the best forwards for USA offensively, imo. Werenski does have a great shot from the point.

I didn't think Milano looked good at all. Milano just didn't seem to be on the same page as anybody. Fasching and Larkin looked good.

Eichel was always in the offensive zone for a reason. He completely controls play out there.

I will say this. It might have looked like Eichel was doing too much but from what I noticed every time he was on the ice it seemed like his teammates kept force feeding him the puck...I cant blame the guy for looking like he was doing too much when his teammates seemed to say here you go do it Jack.

I just think people are willfully confusing "Trying to do it all himself" with "No one can get the puck off of him so he can skate around and pick his spots". He isn't a wild skating devil may care offensive player. He is a strong skating, strong possession, smart distributor.

After this game, they need to get Compher more minutes somehow. He's too good to get 6-7 min all night long. I'm still an advocate of putting Motte with Eichel and putting Compher on the wing on the Larkin line. They'll get even more difficult to handle, and the cost is just that the 4th line is slightly weaker. But even then, de Leo is perfectly capable of anchoring it.

Also, that PP was atrocious. I'd rather see Eichel play the half wall with Werenski on the right point. They need to keep it simple and shoot the damn puck, especially from the point. So, so many PP goals these days come from rebounds and weird deflections. They need to focus more on that than overwhelming their opponent with raw skill.

Maybe start with Werenski-DeAngelo and then have them switch sides, which would open up a lot of options.

personally, it should be Milano - Eichel - Tuch and be done with it..

I don't get why they aren't going to it more, I understand balancing out lines, but the chemistry these three have is what you dream of in a short tourney like this.

On a side note, Anthony DeAngelo impressed the hell out of me. His play was physical, and always putting pressure on the opposition. It wasn't flawless, but this kid made a statement as to why he should have been there last year and that he is here to be the real deal.

Eichel looked good. Great seemingly effortless acceleration. Great possesion player. deangelo looked good and got plenty of minutes. Matthews did not show much and took 2 penalties and seemed to have very limited ice time after the second penalty. The power play was horrible and the overtime 4-3 was very underwhelming - the should have won the game there with all the extra space and with the big US skaters. The Finns were a good team but not overwhelming. Gotta play better going forward it was sloppy at times.

Canada vs USA should be a great game on New year's eve day. Hype of that game kind of reminds me when the Montreal Canadiens played Russian Red Army back in 1976 ( If my memory serves me). Best game ever played to a tie. I can still smell the chestnuts that my uncle was roasting in the fireplace that night.

Can someone please explain why Hanifin isn't seeing any PP time? Looks like he's on PK but come on .
