Eichel looked good. Great seemingly effortless acceleration. Great possesion player. deangelo looked good and got plenty of minutes. Matthews did not show much and took 2 penalties and seemed to have very limited ice time after the second penalty. The power play was horrible and the overtime 4-3 was very underwhelming - the should have won the game there with all the extra space and with the big US skaters. The Finns were a good team but not overwhelming. Gotta play better going forward it was sloppy at times.

Canada vs USA should be a great game on New year's eve day. Hype of that game kind of reminds me when the Montreal Canadiens played Russian Red Army back in 1976 ( If my memory serves me). Best game ever played to a tie. I can still smell the chestnuts that my uncle was roasting in the fireplace that night.

Eichel has been amazing so far. I wish the Bruins or the Wild could draft him. Unbelievable talent.

Can someone please explain why Hanifin isn't seeing any PP time? Looks like he's on PK but come on .

Game is moving to fast for him today. He was a little sloppy today, no physical play. Werenski was better than him today. IMO.

I've been saying it for a month. Maybe Noah has more tools or upside but on the ice right now I like Werenski better.

Werenski may look a little better on the PP, but Hanifin is much better in his zone and much better all around.

Either way, both these 2 are studs, and will be the top 2 Dmen taken. Not often a medal contender relies heavily on 2 double underage D and have them perform this well.

We definitely miss Santini, but I am very satisfied with the 2 97s and Butcher and Deangelo. Hoping for a little more from McCoshen. Like Carlo, Collins is going to struggle against faster teams. Hopefully we stay healthy.

I think Compher deserves a lot more ice time

I'm not a fan of putting him on the 4th line

Me too. Id like to see them move Milano up with Eichel and Tuch, and have Compher on the wing with Matthews and Schmaltz. Put De Leo in as the 4th line center. Either that or just keep De Leo on the wing with the Eichel line.

I like the idea of Milano with Eichel and Tuch , would be an awesome trio. I am sure we will see this at some point in the tourney, espcially if the offense sputters.

Yes but Werenski is making a case for himself to move up in the draft. The whole world is watching.

I was thinking the same thing.

As good as the Milano-Matthews-Schmaltz line looked against Sweden they were completely ineffective against the Finns. I think they could use a player like Compher to bring some more grit and work ethic to the line. Matthews, who did have a rather underwhelming game yesterday, could be much more effective with someone like Compher to work the boards with.

They also need to figure out who's going to play with Eichel and Tuch rather than just cycle various spare parts in and out. It needs to be somebody who's not just going to look for Jack every time and force him the puck. Milano has shown he can do that in the past and putting him there maintains the concentration of talent on the top two lines they seem to want.

One thing to remember with the younger players is that they might be a bit more inconsistent playing at this level that they normally are. Hopefully they'll work through that the next few games and be ready for the big test against Canada.

Eichel was trying too hard. Plus he isn't wearing a cage and McDavid is, so is Eichel a year older than McDavid? If that's the case then Eichel was really trying too hard.

I like that the U.S. weren't in a blowout early on in the tournament. Good to have a tight checking game at the beginning. Gives the squad a good wake up call and you can't take teams or games for granite in a short tournament.

Perhaps it's my inner Sabres fan talking but I really think they've got to move some things around. JT Compher's line was excellent I thought, they need more ice time. Milano was crap yesterday. He looked dangerous but was coasting much of the game. Love Fasching/Larkin. Hanifin was great. Werenski is better offensively though. DeAngelo was impressive too.
Get something like this:
Motte-Eichel-Tuch
Compher-Larkin-Fasching

would be a good top 6. Or Milano on the 2nd line and Compher on the 3rd line.

Pretty good showing overall, but not great. This team will really miss Santini. Also, thought Matthews had a rough go yesterday, looked nervous almost. Hope he picks it up tomorrow.

Is it just me, or does this happen every year? It always seems like Canada gets a cakewalk game to open the tourney and the USA gets a tough one. This could just be recency bias talking, and I'm not sure which is better, but this is sticking out in my mind for some reason.

When you host the tournament you kinda get to decide what teams you want to play, no? Wasn't it a cakewalk for the U.S when they hosted it in Buffalo some years ago?
