The Salminen cut seemed a bit fishy to me over all. IIRC he was cut alongside Petrell, I think, but it was reported as him "leaving the team" the day before those cuts were announced. It was a very quiet announcement that didn't really prompt the kind of commentary that such a high-profile player being cut warrants. It was also reported that there was no injury.

Hopefully Ristolainen takes this the right way. He is a guy I want to figure hugely in the future for the national team. Making him angry and/or disinterested could be very, very bad for the team.

And if we didn't have a system, then what?

Who says we must play without system if we pick say Palola or RR. If we have to get foreign coach it still doesn't mean we have to play without any system. But there is alot of good coaches in Finland.

I don't think he'll throw a fit. He most likely came over on the premise that he'd have to fight for a spot and prove his worth. It didn't happen this time, but he should know as well anyone else just how important he is to the national team's future.

Agreed. But you specifically seemed to question the system's worth over picking the best players.

Well, if the picks are major upsets, like skipping Palola. Palola isn't all around superstar, but he has good release and one timer and scoring touch. In 2011 Immonen was actually a sniper and won the goal scoring of tournament. That kind of players can't be skipped for the system. I hope Jalonen keeps Pulu as a possibility.

One thing to note about KJ is that he does not appreciate one-dimensional offensive players very much. When the big games roll up, you'll often see those guys eating pop-corn in the press box. This might be one reason why we don't have Palola or Salminen in the lineup.

Out of wingers, the team has Jokinen, J.Pesonen, Donskoi and Aaltonen to settle the scoring drive, so it's not like Palola was an absolute necessity. I had him in my late lineups, but in the end I can't say snubbing him was an injustice over that selection. It's not like last year when we saw two promising skill guys (Teräväinen and Keränen) make room to a small army of grinders.

Same for Ristolainen. I would have had him, yeah, but again... to move the puck, there's Lepistö, Hietanen and Lindell (who may also bring the necessary x-factor) and Salmela, Ohtamaa and Jokipakka to rough someone up if need be. It's not like they kicked out a guy with tons of promise and took some utterly useless pylon like *shudder* Jyri Marttinen in his stead, simply because he's "older and wiser" or whatever.

I'm disappointed, but it's also good to keep in mind that there is no one in there who's more or less garbage and only in because he's obviously the coach's pet.

Very nice selections, I can see this team playing for gold, especially if Rinne joins. Lots of experience and skill, some nice youth, plenty of guys with Kärppä background :) Looking good!

At the end of the season, he was really hoping he would get to play at the World's for Finland, I don't think this will completely kill his desire to play in the future, but this cut will definitely leave a mark on his future interest

I think this is how we could get most out of our line up:
J.Jokinen-Barkov-J.Pesonen
Donskoi-Kemppainen-Hartikainen
Aaltonen-Kontiola-Komarov
Ruutu-Immonen-Pihlström

PP1: J.Jokinen-Barkov-J.Pesonen-Hietanen-Lepistö
PP2: Donskoi-Kemppainen-Hartikainen-Kontiola-Lindell

PP1 has Jokinen for backup face off and PP2 has Kontiola. Kemppainen has impressed me with his face off ability and can be most defensive forward of the line to create more space for Donskoi, Konna, Hartikainen. Hartikainen will operate as the mask guy and sometimes behind the net.

I know some stuff aren't realistically going to happen like having Ruutu in bottom-6 or not having Aaltonen on the PP, but this is what I'm hoping and think is quite necessary to do to get more scoring.

As much as I'd like to combine Barkov and Donskoi in some way, it seems pretty difficult to do because KJ isn't goint to split up Jokinen-Barkov and splitting up Donskoi-Kemppainen just isn't smart. So for that reason I ended up putting Donskoi and Barkov in different lines.

I'm not too glad Ristolainen, Palola and Huhtala were left out :(.

PP1: J.Jokinen-Barkov-J.Pesonen-Hietanen-Lepistö
PP2: Donskoi-Kemppainen-Hartikainen-Kontiola-Lindell

That first unit is brutal. Nobody can bring the puck into zone or shoot the puck. Also Kontiola and Donskoi play the same role on PP, no point of having both of them on the same unit.

Based on the practice games Lindell, Kontiola, Ruutu and Aaltonen will be on one unit, Pesonen or Salmela will man the last spot depending if they want to use 4 forwards or not:

Aaltonen-Ruutu-Pesonen/Salmela
Kontiola-Lindell

Second unit will be likely build around Donskoi. Jokinen plays in the middle, Barkov on the right wall. Hartikainen/Komarov/Kemppainen whoever as mask man.

Komarov-Jokinen-Barkov
Donskoi-Hietanen

Maybe he takes it the right way and practices very hard over the summer and can have his +/- close to 0 next season. His horrible +/- value in NHL might have scared KJ not to select him at the end. While it may not be entirely Ristolainen's fault he had a +/- that low, he's also not innocent.

Ruutu-Barkov-Aaltonen
Jokinen-Kemppainen-Donskoi
Komarov-Immonen- Pihlström
Hartikainen-Kontiola-J Pesonen

What do you guys think ?? Should i send this to K Jalonen as little help =)

Very disappointed to see Risto cut out. Im tired of seeing the same guys over and over again.

Mäntylä, Salmela, Ohtamaa.. really ? Couldnt drop one of these players out and get Risto in ?

I mean, i respect the decision in a sense that Risto didnt play well in EHT but the fact is he's a young player and after a season of really trying to make himself better NHL defenseman that's going to show on the big ice. But i guarantee you he would've raised his level of play as the tourny goes on. He's just that kind of guy.

Bottom line is, Mäntylä and Salmela over Risto is a disgrace.

And our head coach refused to comment on why he was left out. For years i've been waiting for Jalonen to coach this team but i have to say right now im disappointed.

J Jokinen and Barkov in same line does not work, they dont fit together.... Has been tested in Florida but they gave up, so they put Jokinen in third line. Dont you wonder why Barkov started scoring goals at the end of the season?, yea, he got a new linemate, Jagr took Jokinens spot

How the hell can you leave a guy like Risto out of this?

Because our coach made clear mistake. I'm still feeling like this can't be true. We had a ****ing solid, big defensive guy, since how long time in Risto, and KoJo turns his back on him based on first game in big rink in two years. OMFG this shouldn't be happening, I'm so mad.

On Kari Jalonen's teams, it probably will leave mark. But one coach isn't really reason to hate the lion logo and blue and white colors.
