So basically, we traded Dorsett, Brassard, and John Moore to rent Gabby for a failed playoff push last year and basically nothing this year? Oof.

I was a big fan of the deal but if we dump Gabby for a small rental return, history may not be kind to Jarmo/JD on this one.

re: Gaborik, I don't like that he's a cheaper alternative, but I can't blame other clubs. The injuries are a huge deterrent. I was hoping that they could get enough return to flip for help from another club.

Can't be a much cheaper alternative than Penner - 4th round pick!

Well the "cheaper" us really Dependant on who he is being compared to. He is naturally going to be cheaper than vanek or kesler, however if he's cheaper than moulson then there is a problem.

Cheaper doesn't have to mean cheap though. When you look at what teams are asking for their forwards, I would take full advantage and offer Gaborik up for less.

I'm not saying that he's going to get traded for a 7th round pick and a used puck bag. It's disappointing that he won't get maximum return, but hopefully Jarmo can maximize the return if that makes sense. I was hoping a first round pick would be coming back to use in another deal.

He never was though. He is injured too often too.

#CBJ GM Jarmo Kekalainen knee deep right now, trying to move Marian Gaborik. Believe they're looking for immediate help on defense.

any ideas on names?

I thought, and posted as much, that we gave up too much for Gaborik. Didnt like Moore included in the deal.

If it's with the Kings, I would go for Robyn Regehr. He's physical and a defense first type player. I don't think the Kings would part with any of their young defensemen.

I'm fine with no young defenders, we have plenty of young defenders, what we need is a veteran like a Regehr to insert into our top 4. I'd also like to resign Nikitin if he could be had under 2 mil per season, but I think he will be getting a raise which we won't be able to afford.

Looks like you were right. If Gabby wasn't going to be in our plans, or they wanted him to prove something first, probably shouldn't have given up all those assets. Dorse especially fits the current teams identity.

Brass had to go but I'm sure we could have found a taker for him in a separate deal. Of course, the fact that we could end up trading Gabby for D when we gave up a solid young D to get him....

I don't think anybody here was happy giving up Moore in the deal. It sure would be nice to still have more, He's look good in this lineup on the bottom pairing.

JFC. Gabby was a worthwhile gamble. If he wasn't injured most of the year, it could (might) have been a different story. Having Moore here now would be just one more inexperienced, young D-man who everyone would be kvetching about not being ready, not to mention one more guy in the logjam.

Dorsett & Brassard are sorely missed. I mean look at how poorly this team is playing. :sarcasm:

Plus it proved Jarmo had the balls to go for it at the deadline. I think most fans and most players probably appreciated that. And, it almost worked.

Oh well. It was worth the chance, he's just not a fit here. I still think he can score 30 elsewhere if he stays healthy.

This might be dumb, and might be especially dumb considering they are i ndivision. But with the PHI trade for MacDonald, Schenn is reportedly available.

Schenn is also terrible. Goloubef and Prout both probably better at this point

Thank you for looking up the season's stats. There is a lot more to consider than that.

BZZT! Wrong! The one and only thing to consider for this particular deal is a guy who is doing better now. This is the nature of backup goaltending. If we want someone who'll be better long term, then, yeah, I'd look at some of those names... in the offseason.

The nuances you describe are quite applicable to many (if not most) other positions... but backup goaltending is a very different animal.
