I'm not an expert on the cap, matter of fact I tend to be on the slow side but in trying to learn here goes. According to CapGeek we will have almost 4 mill available at the deadline. Stastny makes 6.6 so we'd have to ditch the 2.6 mill difference. Not exactly sure why our amount fluctuates, I think it has to do with IR, demotions, etc. So sending one of our young D wouldn't cover the shortfall;even throwing in a low paid F doesn't help. Nikitin & a Skille, Comeau, etc would cover it.

Any input/corrections/clarifications greatly welcomed.

It's for a number of reasons, including the factors you cited, but mostly because what's being capped is the average salary over the year. The trade deadline is 4/5 or so through the year, so if you were a million under the cap for the first 4/5 of the year, you could then go 4 million over the cap for the final fifth and you'd end up right on the cap on average. That average over the year, I believe, is the only thing actually being capped.

Ripken moved from SS to 3rd later in his career. However in the All star game in his last season ARod ran out to 3rd in the 1st inning and forced Ripken to play SS.

He came up through the system as a 3B. The 1981 team had Belanger at short and DeCinces at third, so there wasn't a ton of room for Ripken unless he was in as a utility infielder. Both were gone for 1982, so Ripken took over at third with Lenn Sakata at short. Sakata couldn't handle being an everyday player, so Ripken was moved to short, a move that was much derided since a 6'4" guy playing shortstop basically stood 120 years of baseball tradition on its head. Earl Weaver is the guy who deserves the credit for it; he saw a struggling Ripken and realized that he'd be way too good for too long, and an excellent shortstop was both more scarce and more expensive to acquire than a third baseman of similar caliber.

It was a move that was as baffling as when Ken Hitchcock wanted to make Zherdev a center, even on a short-term basis. It's something that's regarded as impossible to do, so there's no sense in even trying.

Hi canuck fan here

some fans are thinking of a rebuild this summer, I was wondering as kesler is born in Michigan, close to ohio, he might waive to go to cbj. what would you guys give to get kesler.

as a canuck fan I would want 1-2 of rychel, jenner, and murray. with a 1st and/or 2nd

I guessing johansen is untouchable based on the season he is having?

Kesler and Umberger hate each other because Kesler undercut Umberger's value by not signing for enough. So long as Umberger is here, Kesler won't be here.

And yeah, Johansen is untouchable.

I'm more than happy to fix that. Make RJ part of the deal.

fair enough on murray, how about rychel and jenner with a 3rd

kesler guys, was on pace for 38goals this year before his linemates got injured, now every game he has new ones, so it is hard for him. he will be the heart and soul guy on your team and be a great mentor for a young team like cbj. Kesler would be a much needed boast to your team.

also about bob, who do guys have for G prospect/back up because we have a really solid swedish G name Eriksson he won the SEL last year and now is playing on a terrible unica team, but is putting up solid numbers.

would Eriksson be of interest since we have lack and still another solid goalie coming in the wings.

Hmmmm.....I would be more interested in someone who can make our linemates better rather than someone who requires our linemates to make them better. You just knocked down his value.

That not what I meant to say tho, he has played with everybody from sedins to 4th liners who are plugs.

kesler will preform only so much when he has no skill on his line, he is needs at least another decent player and then he can be 30-35 goal scorer with 30assists.

kesler for wennberg rychel and 2nd/erixon

do we have a deal?

There is absolutely NO WAY I would trade 2 of Rychel, Jenner, and Murray for Kesler. Let alone at add a 1st and/or 2nd.

No, we don't. You are asking for all of our best young players/prospects (not including Jenner). ON top of that, you are asking for multiple young players/prospects. We don't need Kesler.

Jenner is 20 years old and plays on the first line. Why would we trade him? Why we would trade 2 forwards we just drafted last year in the 1st round for someone we don't really need?

I just dont like Kesler so I wouldn't want to give up anything because of that, but from a serious view he is not worth giving up promising young players for and recent 1st rounders. His value is definitely lower then previous years and isn't even close to being the missing piece here. A trade like this would be one you look back on in 5 years and say what the hell did we do. Columbus has taken a patient approach of late and I like it much more then trading for players from teams that are just trying to fix their prospect pools because of moves like this

Do not want Kesler. I'd rather take my chances and be patient and see what Jenner and Rychel become.

Add me to the I don't want Kessler club. But I was wondering realistically who would you want and who would you give up. Obviously were not getting Crosby or Malkin or their ilk so what would you guys propose?

I would be surprised if JD and JK start shipping out promising young guys for vets who are approaching (even though not actually in) their declining years. it seems pretty clear that they are keeping their eyes focused on the long term future, not just the next few months

Johansen and Murray are laughable. Straight up isn't even a consideration. I don't think there is any interest in moving Jenner.

I like Kesler a bit more than what you seem to be getting and the FO might have some interest. You might be able to pull out a roster player (although I don't see who works), one of top forward or defensive prospects (not currently on the team), and some form of a pick.

I'm not sure how Kesler would fit with our roster; but since I don't see anything happening I don't really care. To be honest, I'm not even sure your FO wants to move him.

Jenner/Murray/Johansen are clear non-starters.

However, I would easily send a 1st and Rychel, or just about any other prospect in the system. Would have to throw in Boll, Nikitin, or other money though to take on Kesler's deal.

This is exactly the type of deal the CBJ need to make. I know it seems like no one on this board wants to trade any picks or prospects, but keep this in mind: we missed the playoffs last year. We are currently out of playoff position and battling with more talented and experienced teams.

We really need to add another piece or two to the roster who has experience, and is in his prime (and no, not every play needs to be 25)

Realistically, when is a guy like Rychel or Dano going to impact this roster anyway? With Murray, Johansen, Erixon, Jenner, etc we have plenty of solid youth and can afford to part with a prospect or two to land a guy who can really help the roster out this year and the next few years.

Count me out for Kane. Just got a weird feeling about him, and that he wouldn't fit in with the team or the city. Great player though

Let's see. He's 22, so he's younger than Atkinson. He's 6"2, so he's much taller than Atkinson and has 20 lbs on him. And he's already a proven 30-goal scorer and a better all around player than Atkinson. Yet you have a "weird" feeling about him and don't think he'd "fit" in Columbus. Interesting...

The Jets would laugh at an Atkinson for Kane deal. But if there was a way to make a deal for him, I don't see how it could be spun as anything other than a grand slam for the CBJ.

Kane. You could end up inheriting a headache. That relationship with is current team has been fairly rocky at times.
