Would have to throw in Boll, Nikitin, or other money though to take on Kesler's deal.

As long as you are talking about the deadline, sure. Although we could make another deal and ship money off to another team.

I tend to agree with you that these are the type of deals we should, at least, look at. I suspect too much is made of the Kesler/RJ thing. I doubt either of them would let those feeling impact their performance on the ice. Who knows, it might mend some fences.

He's competitive, he can certainly score goals.

For the deadline I would like another center or wing to go on the Dubinsky line and push Atkinson down. A 29 year old with 2 more years left on his contract would work for me.

On Kane.

I think his issues are overblown and under a microscope in a small Canadian town. He's a young guy that will mature. Our group could be a good fit for him. His playing style wouldn't clash with what we are building. If we could get him for Atkinson/Anisimov + Erixon/Prout + a pick, I'd be all over it.

Plus JD is the one of the top 5 most respected faces in hockey and Jarmo is a serial killer.

Yeah...just like Dallas inherited a headache with Tyler Seguin. :m-dance:

Last I checked I did say "could". I'm really not going to bother defending my position. Kane is a risky move, there really isn't a question. To be honest if you are trying to minimize risk based on another result; that is just downright silly.

As far as Seguin, I was never really nervous about the thought of picking him up. I would have picked up Turris as well. I was more nervous about Erixon than the other two, we'll see how that works out. Worked fine last year, this year we have Richards with him in the dog house. No idea what that is about.

Kane's situation really wasn't the same as Seguin's to be honest.

Since my reservations with him have little to nothing to do with on-ice, the concept of "his issues" being related to being "under a microscope" would be unfounded.

I have no idea what the last sentence, about JK/JD, of yours was even supposed to mean.

Considering all the issues he's had, he's still put on a pretty good public face about being happy in Winnepeg. If he were really as bad of a problem as people would think he would have already been traded by now or forced his way out.

I think it is obvious that JD has gotten more out of everyone in the organization (on and off the ice). If Jarmo and JD thought he was the right fit and made the move, I'd be thrilled because he's the right type of player for us, who is locked up for a long time and has tremendous upside.

Issues overblown? Probably.

The rest of it is something I strongly disagree with. I don't think Kane's "issues" are what's prevented him from becoming an All-Star by this point; I think his lack of hockey IQ is a permanent hindrance to him ever reaching that level. Any comparison between him and anyone else branded a problem child like Seguin doesn't work, because they're not similar players at all.

Kane is most effective when he charges the net and plays within 20 feet of it, or when he's coming off the boards from the middle of the circles on down. If this sounds exactly like Rick Nash, you're right. Kane and Nash are pretty similar players; same skillset, same limitations. And Nash was known to disappear for stretches, or suddenly want to turn into Joe Sakic trying to snipe from 35 feet out, or do any of a number of things that were just outside of what he's capable of consistently doing.

Plus JD is the one of the top 5 most respected faces in hockey and Jarmo is a serial killer.

I have no idea what that means.

No one seems to really know what's going on in Winnipeg. I think it's obvious that the media basically whitewashes any issues that might emerge from there, possibly because to do otherwise would blow up the projected image of Winnipeg as some little happy twinkling little wonderland where magic **** happens or whatever.

It could be like what was whispered about Jeff Carter in Columbus, that everything took place behind closed doors in order to facilitate a move out of town. We don't know, and likely won't until someone (foolishly) coughs up a huge amount for Kane.

I think you've mistaken correlation with causation. Pittsburgh once had a massive surge in their season ticket holder base in a single day, but I think most people would attribute it to winning the draft lottery for Crosby and not to anything that the VP of ticketing did.

Sure, it's possible that what you say is true. But at this point, it sounds like the old Soviet-era lampooning of the communist party, like the poem that went "The winter's passed, the summer's here, for this we thank our Party dear."

Agreed. This whole RJ/Kesler nonsense is crap. I think everyone here has probably had one job or another where they haven't gotten along with someone perfectly, but you know how much that means to management? Bupkis. As an adult you gotta sack up and put aside your differences, especially in a professional atmosphere. If RJ had a problem with Jarmo acquiring Kesler, you either trade him for scraps or waive his ass. There's no time for his attitude at that point, trade value be damned.

I inquired on the mains about what it would take to get Kesler. Offered AA+Rychel+conditional 1st. They didn't seem interested in the conditional first but they liked Rychel. Said that Rychel and the first would be getting close. I honestly would do my original deal without the condition if they included a mid pick. As stated above, he's 29 with two years left on a reasonable deal, and I believe he fits our identity. Though I'm a big fan of Rychel, we have plenty of prospects. Kesler would be a coup IMO. I think AA would need to be included for numbers purposes.

No way would I include Murray in just about any trade. Jenner... I could trade him in the right deal but not for Kesler. The above offer would be my absolute highest, and if they would decline, then I would lose no sleep.

Ha. I remember that poem from my school days, but I didn't know it was famous across the ocean as well.
Speaking of Kane. He's the last thing this team needed. I don't miss a thugs in union blue. He was the worst player on his KHL team during the lock out cause he wasn't giving a damn.

IMO Kane doesn't show signs of the kitten complex that drives people crazy about Nash. His playing style is more like the best version of Nash (circa 2003-2006) but Kane can teeter on wreckless. Kane has 121 hits this year -- Nash has 8. He just doesn't have the same level of puck skills and has more personality (although 98% of the league has more personality than Nash).

JD and Jarmo would not entertain this or any other player without doing their homework. If they aren't interested, there would be good reason. These guys won't make a Jeff Carter type mistake.

IMO wrecking ball power forward would be a great dimension to add to this team.

Anyone I talked to in the organization about the transition to JD spoke volumes of the culture change. Perhaps I only spoke to the only positively affected 5 or 6 people/players.

Is there anything actually thuggish about Evander Kane? Or is this just another BS character attack?

If taking a goofy picture with cash makes him a thug, then what is Commodore? If being a black person and connecting to hip hop music and black culture makes him a thug, I think this is the 1990s.

I seem to recall a 22 year old Rick Nash hooking and taking a swipe at a referee while playing for Davos (Canada seems to have scrubbed a history of that video off the internet).

Young people do stupid things.

I'm guessing it's a language issue more than an actual attack. Plenty of people blasted Kane in the KHL for floating around on the ice, and judging from the rest of the comment ("I don't miss a thugs in union blue. He was the worst player on his KHL team during the lock out cause he wasn't giving a damn."), I'm inclined to believe that it's more a slam on players who have a history of giving less than optimal effort on the ice rather than anything else.

Evander Kane played for, and starred for, one of the most hard to play for coaches in all of Canadian Junior hockey, in Don Hay.

The questions on his character stem from things like posting pictures of himself on Twitter while holding a stack of money. Name an NBA player who hasn't done that this week. If this guy becomes available for a reasonable price, I see absolutely no reason why we wouldn't show some sort of interest in him - especially since he's locked up on a very comfortable contract for the next half decade.

Commodore earned his money (or won a bet as he explained it), Kane just stole them. Rinne and Pavelski at least were trying, Kane was only collecting paychecks. In the KHL he was paid as much as he was making in the NHL, but he was acting like he doesn't give a damn about his team and the city that paid the money. Dinamo Minsk is financed by government. So he just stole the money from tax-payers, made a picture in LV with those money and send it to some gungsta rapper.
Why do you think he would give a damn about Columbus? That's just another city where he can pinch some dough.
That "he's young, he's gonna grow up" excuse is just lame. He's a professional athlete who gets paid millions. Grow up at first, then come to the league. Not the other way around.

BTW Rick Nash hooked the referee playing for Canada at the world championship. And I don't see why is it even comparable.

We've frequently heard references to the big-ice game as a different sport, I have no problem if a guy turns out to be ill-suited to it, or at least I have less of a problem than I would if a guy gave up in the AHL (like Joey). Also, let's set our expectations to reality, 20 year old kids frequently show character defects (believe me, I teach at a University). A few years later they are magically reasonable people.

That wasn't a problem of adjusting to the new environment, that was clearly a lack of effort. Pavelski and Rinne were trying, Kane didn't even try to show that he's trying.

Sometimes it goes another way. Hardworking guys become self oriented a**holes with drinking problems (Zherdev and Anisin for example).

I, too, would welcome Evander Kane. The only thing I know personally about him is when I saw him warming up during a preseason game at Nationwide a little while back. There was a little kid wearing a Jets jersey with his parents (I think this was the first year since the relocation) up against the glass in their end where they were skating / shooting. Kane went over to them and I think talked to them. Then he showed off doing some puck tricks during the warmup while looking at the family. Afterwards he skated over and tossed the kid a puck.

Seems like a decent person who isn't above the fans. That said, the cost for him would be astronomical so we'd have to be SURE it would be a smooth transition unlike the Carter debacle. Also, teams don't usually up and trade a young star like him. I'd want to know the reason why Winnipeg wants to move him.

Just watched the Jarmo interview with Rimer

The fact that he mentions (by name) Johansen, Murray, Jenner, Atkinson, Savard, and JJ, and calls them all 'part of the core' and 'the identity we want to have.' I would think that would mean all won't be going anywhere unless a gross overpay.
