Also I know everyone's reluctance to trade Kreider. I certainly don't want to unless it's for someone like Kesler. But you guys need to realize that if a team is going to trade us a star player, they're going to ask for Kreider. As they should. Will Sather move him? Doubt it. And that can stall negotiations.

Just trying to be realistic.

I would vomit all over my laptop if this went down.

Dear god step for Staal would not upgrade the center depth by a large margin at all...

Management must be hooked on keeping all the defensemen

From what Canes fans say on HF he has a problem with putting forth a full effort during the regular season. No thanks. That is the last thing this team needs.

The Canes would have to eat about 30 per cent of his cap hit to make it worthwhile and even, what happens in 2 years when his contract is up and we've got no young centers again?

Between Staal and Thornton I get the horrible feeling slats is trying to load up on some big name help to get us over the line

How's that? Doesn't Eric Staal make like...twice as much as Stepan?

Yea... not totally sure how that was the conclusion drawn there.

But for ***** and giggles. If Carolina retained 10 % of Staal's salary to make it more palatable, you assume NYR slots in 2 rookies who stick, gets semi-favorable deals out of a few of their RFAs/UFAs, AND the cap is $71 mil and no less... then you can almost make it work. And of course the below only uses 20 roster spots. So overall very unrealistic scenario, but whatever. What's the fun in reality?

FORWARDS
Chris Kreider ($2.250m) / Eric Staal ($7.425m—10.00%) / Rick Nash ($7.800m)

Benoit Pouliot ($1.700m) / Derick Brassard ($3.700m) / Mats Zuccarello ($4.100m)
Oscar Lindberg ($0.675m) / Dominic Moore ($1.500m) / Derek Dorsett ($1.633m)
DEFENSEMEN

Obviously we trade for Jordan Staal to put in #2C slot.

Trade for Jared too, he can gather the players' sticks after the games or something. Dude really got the short straw in that family, lol.

Idk if I can call being a Ahl/4th liner the short straw.. He gets to mooch off his over paid brother in Carolina

I really don't like Eric Staal's contract... but if you assume Carolina retains some salary, I'd be more interested in what people would think about an M. Staal+ for E. Staal trade. (Not saying this as a real rumor; just a hypothetical)

Not sure I do it -- I'm a fan of doing our best to keep much of the d-corps in tact. But I'd look twice at it.

Eric Staal with a friendlier cap hit is on a short list of centers that have been talked about on here that I would actually have any amount of interest in. One of the others being maaaaybe ROR. Zero interest in Thornton or Spezza. And probably not Stastny at the cap hit he would command.

And re: "E. Staal is not better than Stepan...": I think that if you place value on Stepan's age and potential, I maybe agree. But if we're talking about right now? Where both players are now? Not so sure I agree with that statement. Outside of the shortened season - in which he had a pretty abnormally high shooting % - Stepan is not yet a point per game center. Staal has been for the most part. Step isn't even a half point per game in his playoff career; and certainly didn't look dominant or like a 1C. Meanwhile Staal has looked like one in the only two deep runs Carolina made, and scored at a point per game pace. Also has some more size and snarl to his game, which Step does not. Not trying to knock Step, because I like him - just pointing out that based on current performance he may be getting overvalued a bit here. And what moves has our GM been making recently that really makes us think he's thinking long term? Little bit concerning to hear this rumor if you don't like the proposal. Not sure what I think about it personally.
