Long time lurker. Just signed up. Here's what I do if I'm Sather. Keep Richards. I know it's unpopular but I would much rather deal with Richards than Nash and his absurd price tag. I don't want to risk Richards choosing waivers instead of using his NMC. Because if he's claimed, were screwed regardless and I would rather pay him to score for us than pay his potential recapture down the road while scoring after the Debbie's claim him.

Go hard for Kesler. One of the few players I would deal Krieder for. I think Kreider and Skjei gets it done.

Get Cammaleri on a two year deal worth 7m per. Trust me. He's worth it. He takes a short deal because it allows him on more contract before the 35+

Sign Thornton for 4th line. Re sign Zucc, Brassard, and Boyle.

Cammaleri - Stepan - Kesler
Hagelin - Richards - St Louis
JT - Brassard - Zucc
Thornton - Boyle - Dorsett

I love this roster. It has skill. It has toughness. It wins faceoffs. PP PK and good two way game.

These forwards will barely fit under the cap let alone the rest of the team. Also no thank you.

Welcome to the boards. Good luck.

Kreider and Skjei for Kesler?!?! Just...just no. This off-season is going to take years off my life.

Skjei is nothing special. Very inconsistent. Don't think he's anything more an a third pair guy at best. Kreider is a beast but Kesler is elite.

Depending on the RFA deals I think Sather can make it work for around 1 mil under cap

Trust me if he could get it done for 20m under the cap it would still be a bad idea. I was playing around on Capgeek just to see how bad it would be and was coming up around 4m over the cap so you must be expecting some of these RFA's to play for free. This isn't even touching on the fact that you're banking on Mike Cammelleri and Brad Richards to be key players for you.

Welcome to the boards.

It's incredibly unlikely Richards would choose waivers, and even more unlikely that a team would claim him at his salary and cap hit.

Richards would be much better off taking his buyout money from the Rangers and then having his freedom to choose among any teams that want to sign him to a new contract.

No team will want him at his current salary and cap hit. So a team claiming him and then the Rangers getting hit with a cap recapture penalty via him retiring early from that team would be very improbable.

The Rangers should definitely wish Richards well and use their compliance buyout on him.

Have no idea how reliable this is:

"MacLean "SJ is desperate to make some moves, I keep hearing Thornton could end up in NY & Dion will end up in SJ""

EDIT - Is it possible he typo'd considering he only mentions Thornton and Phaneuf, and Phaneuf going to SJ?

Glen Sather, is that you?

Cammaleri worth 7M per??? That's the type of money Spezza and Henrik Sedin get and he's nowhere near those players. Did you mean 2 years for 7M (3.5M per?) Two years of Kesler (UFA in 2) is worth Kreider? <Steven Carell nonono> When Boston released Thornton, I rolled my eyes because he's got "Glen Sather tough guy summer signing quota" written all over him. Maybe if we move Dorsett to save cap but knowing Glen, he'll move Dorsett and sign Thornton for $1.8M per who'll do a worse job that Dorsett would have. :shakehead

welcome to the boards indeed.

Technical contract question: Can we buyout Richards, he signs with another team for say $1M a year and then that team trades him to us for future considerations or a conditional 7th?

On Byfuglien, he is a need and an upgrade for offense from the backend. He also adds that big shot, or big power forward option for the Rangers.

His fitness levels are an issue, but Stralman at 4.5 vs Byfuglien at 5.2, I'd take Buff. WPG quietly has one of the best group of RHDs in hockey. Since Buff was out of shape last year, he had trouble keeping up with long shifts (similar issue with Nash this year in the playoffs), so the new coach Maurice, knowing that he had two legitimate RHDs in Bogosian, and Trouba (who is an absolulte stud btw), moved Byfuglien up front.

NYC puts pressure on an athlete's fitness like no place else. The best restaurants with healthy options are here, so choice of food shouldn't be a concern for Byfuglien, but rather his commitment.

The cap and cost of assets are the real concern for manangement, especially since the trade chips aren't there. I think if the Rangers get that top 6 center with size, and that offensive top 4 RHD, while backfilling over valued contract spots (ie $4.5M for a 10 pt D, $4.5M for a center that produces off of third pair matchups, $3.5M for a 4th line wing), then the Rangers will be in a good spot for the next 2-3 years extending the window.

It's not about overpaying to keep the guys you have, you overpay to make the team better if you have to. So I am all for getting a Byfuglien, or Spezza, or even Thornton, because the plus value add they have over a Brassard, Stralman, or Boyle makes the team better.

My perspective will be from the ability of the overall team, and not what each component earns in salary like many choose to do. The cap is 69 and change, and that's what matters to me besides winning and what he does to contribute towards it, I won't get my shorts knotted up on their salary unless they lack effort or can't keep up.

Everyone with there complete over hauls scare me... Just make 1 or 2 moves keep the majority of the team together we were just in the SCF so there is no need to blow up the team just to improve one spot on the team. Like slats did with the nash trade. Quality depth players>a single ageing "star"

Skjei is a kid. I highly doubt that anybody can speak with certainty about what his ceiling is yet.

I would never trade Kreider and a first round pick for Kesler, who is 29 and has been a ~50 point player his last two full seasons.

Long-term, on the cap, you lose a forward who will be making maybe between 2 and 3 mill for the next few years as a first line winger, and a D man that may make the team on an ELC down to the line, for a guy who is already paid handsomely, and at his age, is likely to trend downward. Oh, and he's going to want a raise in two years.

Even just talking about play, Kreider may be capable of matching Kesler's offense as soon as next year, when he'll be 24. No, he's not a center, but I don't think the position makes the age difference worth it.

Kesler was elite. I really don't think he is anymore.

There are very few players this organization would be willing to part with Kreider in order to acquire. Ryan Kesler is certainly not one of those players.

You know not saying the Rangers should or I want them to trade for Thornton (give me someone like ROR due to age/upside), but its funny the stigma he gets of "can't win" Mr regular season, etc..

The guy has 100 points in 132 playoff games!.. That's almost a .80PPG!.. Lord knows we didn't need that kind of production vs LA right..?

This guy seriously might be the Sharks version of Lundqvist.. elite player, gets all the blame because his team can't win.

Plus over sized pads.

Story on Thornton is that he doesn't elevate his game in the playoffs. The guy is a consistent point producer, and is usually a lock for generating 70 plus GF for the team (mostly in assists), but in recent years he's become a go-to defensive guy in addition to his offense.

He has some pretty impressive nerd stats. Good player, and one that shouldn't be thought of as a savior, but if he comes cheap, I'd pull the trigger on it. Big playmaking center that can create room and buy time and space is a rare rare commodity in the NHL.

He isn't the fastest skater however, and he isn't going to score a lot of goals, but this guy wins a lot of board battles and generates offense from it. Will probably want to be a Ranger too since it sounds like SJ wants a changing of the guards and he can play with his buddy Nash and not be a savior at this stage in his career.
