Told the Coyotes are strongly considering buying out Mike Ribeiro. The veteran forward is under contract through 2016-2017. Not official.

they legit just signed him after the CBA was signed... so sad

How Ribeiro got $20M+ more than Grabovski, I will never understand.

Worry about that then.

Would you rather have scenario A or B:

A) Staal (3.9 this year) either walks for nothing next season or is re-signed for ~6mil per season.

B) Leddy (2.7 this year, which is less than our 3rd pairing D Kevin Klein) is a RFA who can't walk for nothing and can either be locked up long-term if he fits in here, or traded, or taken to arbitration.

Scenario B has a lot more positive options/outcomes.

Not to mention Staal has likely played his best hockey already, while Leddy at 23 still has room to grow and develop as a defenseman, and already provides more offense than Staal by a wide margin.

The only thing Staal has on Leddy is that he's better defensively.

Cap-hit? Leddy
Offense? Leddy
Defense? Staal
Age? Leddy
RFA vs UFA: Leddy

Do I really need to go on?

Take the blinders off, please.

Setting aside/not commenting on the rest of it, shutdown D of Staal's calibre is premium. D from a D. Get it.

Leddy = decent, but let's not go overboard here.

blinders = physician, heal thyself.

If he is bought out then he can be signed for almost half of what he gets right now presumably...

that's a huge center upgrade over Miller in the short term

He could be a stopgap, and he could come cheap.

Its the least worst option to look into considering the issues at center.

Hearing players may not invoke escalator into salary cap equation...cap could be well below 70 million....68?

Wonderful...

It would be pretty much the same situation as Grabovski last year. Down year in first year of big contract. Market is uninterested because of bad year. Bargain for signing team.

If the Coyotes are willing to eat 2/3 of Ribeiro's contract, why not eat half and trade him to the Rangers?

Right now the cap for next season will be at $68M and that's causing problems. But wait ! NHL and NHLPA are still talking. Final # to come.

Ribeiro still put up 47 points in 80 games, playing 18 mins a night. Richards had 51 in 82 playing 18:41 a night.

You're a Corsi guru, what does Ribeiro's possession numbers look like?

He could -- if dirt cheap -- add to our depth and possibly be worth adding to the Fs; but he would not be a stopgap for JT.

Miller is the ONLY guy w/speed enough for optimizing Kreider + MSL.
It is not a conversation. Obviously other Cs are better; most are not better complement for those wingers speed.

That would be smart for the Yotes, but not so good for us. I'd rather sign him for cheap after they buy him out and keep our limited assets.

Never been a fan of Ribeiro's play, his playoffs against the Rangers when he was playing for the Caps did not do much for me either.

What are we looking at as likely contract for Ribeiro?

If its similar to Grabovski, I'd prefer Gabovski.

Pretty good, 7th on the team, but he was also getting nearly 50% of his zone starts in the offensive zone.

I don't think it really matters though in this situation, he'd be a good center option, and would probably help the PP.

I thought he was one of the better players on the ice for the Caps.

That said, I dont think hes great or anything, but beggars cant be choosers at this point when it comes to getting a solid, fiscally responsible center.
