Im just not at all as high on ROR as a lot of ppl are. I wouldnt make that trade.

fair point.. I'm just saying it's a little weird because Staal is always going to be the #3 dman here (even if re signed) because of mcdonagh and girardi. meanwhile ROR has the chance to be a #1 center here..

That team would look something like this..

Thornton -Kopitar- Hossa
Sharp -Bergeron- Marchand
Riley Smith - Toews - Williams
Saad - Carter - King

Muzzin - Doughty
Keith - Seabrook
Leddy - Vlasic

I had to move some people around to make it fit into your narrative.

I dunno, you tell me, does that look like a strong team? Perhaps an unbeatable team?

Sure does to me.

So basically a Sharks/Hawks/Kings/Bruins super team.

Iginla intrigues me, but don't think he's worth the two years he's going to want.

I also don't want to take the chance on post-concussion Dan Boyle. It sucks, but our cap limitations will require some young kids to step up (whether we like it or not). Some shrewd moves may have to be made for some names we won't expect, but I trust Gorton to acquire the right pieces to help keep this team in contention.

if im the GM my #1 target is Grabovski, my #2 target is Thornton, and my #3 target is someone like Goc/Legwand/Roy/Mueller/etc to bring into camp if JT Miller isnt ready. If he is, then you move those guys out at the deadline and move things around till then to make it work.

ROR is basically Bergeron. I'd give up Staal to get him. However, I don't see how we could afford to trade Staal if Stralman walks. Signing Staal to an extension and signing Grabovski might be the better plan.

I just think extending Staal is short sighted. Our young talent on the left side is so much better than our talent on the right side. Even the biggest McIlrath supporters have to admit that Skjei is way ahead of him at this point. Behind Skjei we have Allen, Bodie, and Graves. All we have behind McIlrath is Allen playing on his off side, plus projects like Andersson and Zamorsky. If we're going to maximize our assets and cap space to make a cup run, paying Stralman and dealing Staal for someone like ROR or Kadri makes more sense than giving Staal a Girardi deal and letting Stralman walk.

The difference between the best possession teams in the league and the worst are + or - 6-7% from a 50/50 split. Thats not a lot over the course of a game, and certainly not a lot over the course of a season.

I think the Corsi stuff is very useful, but what gets dangerous is when its used as the bible. Because, simply said, you can stack a roster with however many Corsi-friendly players you want and there will still be plenty of need to defend without the puck.

This, I agree.

I can get on board with this. Depends on if there's a + and what that + is

The GM is Glen Sather.

I really like O'Reilly, but I'm just not sold on the $6M price tag that comes with him. Don't get me wrong I think he has all the potential to be an elite center, but I think we can allocate $6M better.

Say we have to trade Staal, and I don't want to, but is there a REALISTIC return for a young left handed PMD and a young center? For example, Riley Sheahan and Brendan Smith.

An optimal return that fits this example would be Kadri and Gardiner, and an extremely unrealistic return would be Zibby and Wiercioch.

You know there's one thing I don't get.. This place alot of time is all about looking to the future. I completely get that next year if we dealt Staal and replaced him with Allen or Moore, the D could possibly be very bad especially if Mcdonagh gets hurt.

However, back to the Staal for ROR.. Staal is also a soon to be UFA.. You can say he will easily get 5M+ on the open market, maybe even 6, which puts him right around where Ryan O Reilly will be.

So even if the Rangers took a step back this year because of their defense, for the FUTURE wouldn't you rather tie up 6M in a #1A center to put with Stepan going forward than 5-6M in a guy who is a great defensemen defensively don't get me wrong, but a 2nd pairing guy because he's behind Ryan Mcdonagh for at least the next 6 years?

something to think about..

I would, if I was convinced ROR was a 1A C. Plus we don't even know if Colorado would do a ROR-Staal swap. But I can get on board with it even if he's a 1B or a 2A.

You're just not going to get a package like that for Marc Staal.

Damn good point about the depth we have on the left compared to the right...

That's part of what makes the best possession players the best, it's not just how they defend the puck when they have it.

Look at that dream team Inferno posted, half of the team excellent two-way players including several perennial Selke candidates.

Tell me that team wouldn't be a lock for a deep playoff run every year, and most likely several 'Cups?

Trust me I'm well aware of that, but Gorton definitely has his fair say and has better vision than Sather.

I think Gorton and Clark are clearly directing who we go after at this point, especially when it comes to young guys. Sather admitted he never even watched McDonagh before dealing for him. He just went for who Gorton and Clark told him to.

Exactly, which is why I can see them nudging Sather to make shrewd moves for names that we won't expect. We also can't count out AV's influence either. He's been well exposed to the Western Conference, so he may be able to mention some young players that he sees potential in. What about Connor Murphy out of Phoenix?

That's not a lot? The Rangers had over 7,000 shot attempts for and against at 5-on-5 this season. A 12% difference in corsi-for will mean another 900 shots for as opposed to against. That is a big difference.

Right. But let's not pretend that automatically means that Stralman contributed to that enough to warrant overpaying him.

The Rangers scored more on Wednesdays in March when it rained. Does that mean that had anything to do with it? Or do you just sometime score more than other times?

I'm not trying to say Stralman is a bad player. I love him. I really want him back, but not at 4.5 mil on a long-term deal. If he wants 4.5, he can have it for 4 years, not for 6. If he wants 6 years, the highest I'd go is 4 mil. He supposedly wants security for his family. The 4x6 deal nets him more overall money and more security/stability than the 4.5x4. But of course, this is all moot if he's simply going to take the offer from the highest bidder and play on Long Island or Toronto.

No, was just answering a question, but it seems like some people don't want to actually hear the answers.

LOL.

It wasn't. My point is that the splits would be the same, 55-45 or 60-40 or whatever they are.
OK.

Did someone make the case that it would be 100%?

What's wrong with 55%? Since 2007-08, 13 teams have been about 55% Fenwick-close. 4 have won the Cup. 7 have made the Conference Finals.

1 sub-45% team has made the playoffs. First round exit.

Apparently Keith Yandle is available "for a player with a similar contract".

Don Maloney was a part of the Rangers organization when they traded up and drafted Marc Staal in 2005.

Would a package surrounding Staal net Yandle?

Staal + Lindberg

Yandle

We add because Yandle is signed. 5.25 for 2 more seasons. Staal is signed for 1 more season at 3.97.

Staal will cost 6+ on his next contract and the Coyotes have the cap space. We do not.

Doesn't address the center position, but you get an extra season out of the #2 LHD spot. And a PP QB.

If poo walks would anyone be interested in signing Molson? Sure he's more expensive buts he's a upgrade

I'd like to see them pick up a lower cost option to compete with the kids and let them fight over it. Let a vet, Fast, Haggerty, and a darkhorse like Duclair battle it out.
