Oh, Magyar in the first round, suddenly I feel less lonely. :naughty:

Thanks, I really like his game. Smart pro style game. Actually could see him as Kings type player for sure.

Very happy to see this -- Magyar drafted by LA would make me very happy. He very quickly became my favourite player in Kitchener, and while I hope he doesn't go to a team I detest, going to a team I like would be great. Total character kid too, and I won't be surprised to see him wearing the C in Kitchener in 2015.

Looks like a Futa hire.

You guys remember when Taylor's staff, headed by Al Murray, avoided CHL prospects like the plague? They loved their collegiate guys and Europeans since that bought them more time to sign them to ELCs compared to junior prospects, and I'm sure as a result passed up on some great talent due to their stingy draft philosophy.

Such a nice change of pace to see a chance in how aggressive the team is now in going after the prospects they highly desire. They traded up to select Toffoli, traded up to select Zykov, did the same to select Forbort (though one can argue if that was the right pick), etc. Before Lombardi, the Kings sat on their hands and never made deals to move up to get the players they want, though thankfully sitting on their hands worked out well in 2005!

Byrne is landing on his feet in his new position. With the Kings, Byrne will re-connect with former Owen Sound GM Mike Futa, who now serves as vice president of hockey operations and director of player personnel for Los Angeles. Their relationship goes back almost a decade to when Byrne, then coaching with the Nepean Raiders of the Central Canada Hockey League, served as area scout for Owen Sound. Byrne told Futa all about current Philadelphia star winger Wayne Simmonds, who at the time was going largely unnoticed while putting up big numbers with Brockville.

Futa brought Simmonds to Owen Sound. After Futa joined Los Angeles, he successfully argued for the Kings to select Simmonds in the 2007 entry draft.

The one draft that I believe the Kings royally screwed up on was 2003. They had 3 picks in the first round of what was one of the deepest drafts in NHL history and they end up with Brown, Boyle and Tambellini. I really wanted to understand their thought process(es) on decision making, but it baffled me. The funny thing? They now have Carter and Richards, who were both in that draft class in the first round.

I'm really happy with the way this team is being run as currently assembled. Lombardi has a lot of structure within the organization all the way down to the minors, we have a great coaching staff and it looks as though we are in a great position to maintain our prospects going forward.

Searched this whole thread, can't believe no one has mentioned John Quenneville as a potential target for our first round selection.

Screams Kings to me. Big bodied player, can play multiple forward positions, 200ft player, AND his favorite player and the player he models his style after is Anze Kopitar.

Projected to go late first/early second.

I have him on my list but see him as a 3rder. He has skill and size but hasn't put it all together enough yet to where I am as optimistic as others are about him. He absolutely seems like a Kings prospect though but then there are several kids this draft who do.

Lots of pundits saying that this draft isn't going to be a good one. I disagree entirely. It may not have as many elite caliber talents in it as some drafts but to me this is one of the deepest character/grit/tough drafts in a few years.

Lots of NHL caliber kids in this draft several of whom I think will find their way onto NHL rosters in the next couple of years. Character counts.

They'll soon get their chance again in 2015. These deep, deep drafts happen every 12 years.

:yo:

I still like him. Would take him back in a heartbeat.

As would I, but I wouldn't call him a star winger while doing it which was more my point.

Then what happened in 1991? Was a decent draft, but wasn't this deep, deep draft you are referring too.

People make this 'every 12 years' bit because of 1979 and 2003. Deep drafts happen, but no pattern to it.

I would be incredibly surprised if he is available in the mid second.

In regards to this draft...it's not super high on quality but there is plenty of mid level quantity. picks 10 through about...45 are all incredibly similar it's kind of ridiculous.

2007 was another draft that was being hailed at the time as being tremendously weak. Teams were moving 1st round picks at the NHL trade deadline and during the draft itself like it was Halloween candy, but a lot of solid players came out of that class.

So it'll certainly be interesting to see which scouting departments bust their hump and unearth some real gems for their teams.

Strong finish and way to go HC.

You and I have #8 and #6 in different positions (I have DC at 11) but your reasoning and the article again is very well thought out and written.

Anyone reading this should go and read what Holden has written as it is very insightful and right there with any of the other reports that I have read regarding the top prospects in the coming draft. Outside of two or at most 3 picks which I believe will go to off the table prospects I am willing to bet that Holden has things figured out right there with the best of them.

Great job and interesting takes.

Man I'm not sure if I'm that high on Nylander. I know everyone is these days but something about his game buggers me, I don't think his play selection is that good, holds onto the puck for way too long and I wonder how that turns out at the NHL level. Either going to be a star or someone you don't want on your team IMO, on the other hand you don't want to miss on Patrick Kane if that's what it comes down to. Other than that I said on LGK a few weeks ago that Kempe's stride with the puck reminds me of Kopitar, glad to see someone agrees.

DARKHORSE DRAFT CANDIDATE:

Justin Kirkland, LW, Kelowna Rockets-WHL, 6-3, 190, young; DOB is August 96, rookie in the Dub this year; high hockey IQ; still growing; probably ends up 6-4 210-220; Carter size; good skater and will get better as he fills out his frame; soft hands; good speed for a big kid; good passer and possession player; works the boards an dirty areas; makes space for his linemates; worked his way up from 4th line to PP, PK and top line minutes;
really came on in last quarter of season and had strong playoff performance. Strong work ethic

Likened to Benn and Van Riemsdyk. In a few years this kid could be very tough to handle. Really a projection pick, but could be a home run if his development continues.

Nikita Tryamkin.

The more I watch of this kid the more he seems to look like a young Chara.

Kid was impressive at the U-20 for Russia WJC, Would be a great second round pick or maybe even late first.

I'm sure he's on the Kings radar. He's one of those players where I wouldn't mind the Kings grabbing him with their first, but I'm not overly excited about him either.

Just nothing explosive in him from what I've seen.

But he would be a great fit.

So LAKs picking:

29th
63rd
90th
120th
150th
157th
209th (Carcillo deal)?
210th

Simple, standard line, best player available... eventually you will see a good mix of D and Forwards, I dont think they will draft a goalie, but wouldnt be surprise if there was one....
