I'd prefer another shutdown defenseman, but I don't see that happening unless Tyutin or Wiz get traded.
I'd prefer a beter backup goalie, but that ship sailed this morning.
We still need a sniper with some speed up top.

Not sure if I can talk about him still but yes on that 1st part. How much more value do you think Wiz has than Tyutin to other teams? How about our team? I've been saying for a while now that we need to get more defensive back there. People harp on me for suggesting trading Wiz, but other than him, Tyutin and Johnson, who do we have back there with legit known value across the league? Frankly I want nothing to do with trading JJ, Murray or Savard. Or Prout, but that's for obvious other reasons.

I've got the same thoughts on the goalie situation. For the last part, what about Callahan? He's got very good speed, brings plenty more, but is he enough of a "sniper" for you? Who other than Vanek would fit that for you? Vrbata or Cammaleri?

Wishlist for me is..1]Callahan 2]Vrbata 3]Kulemin 4]Cammaleri 5]Vanek

I think the writing's been on the wall for awhile that we're targeting Callahan for second-third line duty. Absent of that, I don't see us going after anybody significant. Maybe a depth defenseman?

they need to be forced to make their own room...

They do, however, you aren't going to force Horton, Hartnell, Joey, Callahan (if he were signed as some are hoping) out of the lineup. You don't sign FA to long term expensive deals only to trade them (well, unless you are Philly). We have no idea what the young players will do but locking in long term players could severely handcuff a team like Columbus. Additions will most likely be via trade. I just don't see more bricks, key bricks, via free agency.

Maybe I'm wrong but it would be counter intuitive in my opinion.

i don't disagree...but I don't want to just hand spots to the kids...we did that before and look where it got us...I don't think (at least) one of Dubi, Arty, Cam will be here after this season, with maybe one of them gone before this one...so there are still some opportunities to do what you want.

Rutherford said on Monday that unrestricted free agents Matt Niskanen and Jussi Jokinen, in particular, will likely play elsewhere next season.
Niskanen and Jokinen increased their respective values by having excellent 2013-14 seasons.
“I've talked with them,” Rutherford said. “I think both players would like to return. But they're also coming off good years. It's time for them to hit free agency and get their big contracts. With that being said, we'll see what happens leading up to free agency.”
Rutherford declined to comment on defenseman Brooks Orpik, another unrestricted free agent.
Ik some people were interested in Jokinen, still interested after getting Hartnell?

If the Jackets make another significant move, the Metro could be a race between the Jackets, Rangers and Flyers and doesn't involve the Penguins (seems hard to believe). They are in complete disarray at this point.

-Pens will still be a regular season Juggernaut.
-The Rangers just played an extra quarter of a season and while they'll still be up there, see a bit of a decline.
-I have no idea what the Flyers are doing, could see this Umberger move being a part of a shakeup.
-The Caps had a terrible season and I think they'll have a bit of a bump in points.
-The Devils will benefit from not having to give Marty significant pity starts but I don't think they're a playoff team.
-Don't see substantial improvements from the Canes
-Ditto for the Isles.

Idk. I see everyone taking a step back and some forward from last year (obviously). Some more than others.

I agree, PIT will always route the regular season.

Not a believer in PHI atm. Their defense is terrible and goaltending with decent offense can only go so far.

I don't think the Rangers will be as great as advertised. They were worked by Pittsburgh until they choked, and they would have been worked by every other team they played in the East except the ones they played (Except maybe Tampa.) This showed in the SCF.

I think NYI take a step forward.

Agree on CAR

I think the Devils will stay where they were last year.

So at current state what's our group of top 9 forwards look like?

Jenner Johansen Horton
Hartnell Anisimov Foligno
Calvert Dubinsky Atkinson

Not sure I like that. Maybe Hartnell Dubinsky Atkinson as the 2nd line?

It's better but still lacks top line skill. More 2/3 tweeners. Solid group that will be a ***** to play against but still not going to scare anyone or have someone take over a game beyond Joey.

I don't think the Dubi line gets split up unless we add another top 6 guy. Then I see either Foligno or Jenner moving down to Dubi's line with Calvert going to the 4th.

Well we should see a much better Horton and Hartnell will probably be an upgrade on Umberger. It doesnt need to scare people to win, last years offence was good and there should be some growth from the young guys. Plus thats a pretty solid group in terms of keeping the puck out of its own net and then add a 4th line thats probably one of the more productive ones in the league

What about...Rychel, Erixon and Atkinson for Kesler or E.Kane

For E. Kane? I don't think I would do it, he doesn't fit with what JD/Jarmo are trying to build (he's had off-ice issues, as well as some one-ice ones IIRC). But for Kesler, maybe. He's a FA after this coming year so that is a lot to give up for 1 year of service. Maybe he would sign an extension here now that Umberger is gone?

Which forward would you trade?

I think we are a year away at least from trading forwards for D help. I can't see a trade happening right now without another F coming back our way...not when there is uncertainty with Wennberg, Rychel, Dano, etc making the club and being effective.

right now I think that we need to get a ufa my pick Callahan (bring the hate)
sign him for 3-4 years and look at using Atkinson later as trade bait with a first for an upgrade if we want but if we got Callahan I think we have one of the deepest teams in the nhl

Jenner Johansen Horton
Hartnell Anisimov Callahan
Foligno Dubinsky Atkinson
Calvert Mackenzie Letestu
Wennberg

if wennberg plays into the lineup then I ay move calvert up and foligno to rw then trade cam for a nice defenseman or some sort of upgrade

There is no way Callahan signs somewhere for only 3 or 4 years.

Every not very knowing man's solution to everything is to trade Atkinson for something or not much of anything as the case may be.

If Callahan were to sign for 3-4 years, it would be in Tampa where he apparently really wants to play. And Tampa wants him. But according to every account I have read in the Tampa papers, Callahan is sticking to the same demand he made in New York, six years at $6 million per. If he dropped to four years, Tampa would sign him in an instant.

Rychel has Kesler potential. I'd rather see how that pans out. I'm not sure Kesler is the same player he was a few years ago - I wouldn't be willing to give much for him at all. Maybe Erixon and a high pick, tops. Evander Kane does nothing for me - more sizzle than steak. I don't see him as that much of an upgrade over Atkinson or 'future' Rychel to make it worth doing from either a hockey or business perspective.

I admit I overvalue some of these young guys (Atkinson), but frankly, I don't understand moves like this - it seems lateral at best, a rip-off at worst. I tend to think we ought to see how some of these guys on RFA or entry-level deals work out before I'd trade for someone who *might* be marginally better.

My guess is that if the Jackets were interested in Callahan, they are no longer with the Hartnell trade. With the money and term tied up in Horton and Hartnell, it makes it hard to believe they would sign someone like Callahan to a 6 or 7 year deal. I don't really want Vanek, but a top line winger like that seems to make more sense than going after Callahan.
