So our heralded 42 point defenseman that was a 1st rounder in the end nets us a 2nd rounder - way to manage assets there

That heralded defenseman wasn't any good...he had a couple of good seasons and then reverted to being disastrous defensively with little offense which continued in Nashville

I think the point is the we should have traded him before he was exposed for what he is and his value went to ****, that's how I see it at least. Everyone knew he was the odd man out.

Fact is we can't really assess who they decide to keep until:

We find out what stralman is looking for
What kind of extension Staal wants if any
How much boyle is asking $ wise

We also need to find out if the cap will be $69m or 71m... That cab also make or break us...

Lastly I think its imperative that we get more offense from the blue line. I'd love to move stralman to McDonoughs pairing and then move girardi but that will only happen if management forces him out of town... Quite frankly I think Staal or Girardi can net a Solid return whereas Klein and Stralman will not.

Lol except when he was putting up 40 pts and was seeming to improve everyone would say he's an untouchable

Maybe. Idk. For me then, he's been the odd man out since the emergence of McD

We fans doesn't run the club, he was the third LHD on a young dcore where the players contract expires season by season, I think it was clear for them he eventually had to go. If it wasn't for Staal helth issues I think he would have been traded way earlier

I just don't see how it makes sense to sign Staal long term. A year from now Allen should be ready, Bodie could be ready, and Skjei will likely be very close. Skjei should be considered the future of our second pairing on the left side. You can't extend everybody and Staal's play has been extremely inconsistent in the last few years. Paying a ton of cash for two immobile guys with poor puck skills in Staal and Girardi at the same time is not smart.

Stralman, on the other hand, is a rare commodity. He's the only right handed defenseman we have who moves the puck well. We have nobody in the system with his skill set on the right side. They need to pay him.

I would jump for joy if the Oilers offered him 6 million. Then the Rangers could draft a franchise center.

My off season.

1. Buy Richards out.
2. Trade Nash. Best offer. Hopefully a high pick and good, young role player.
3. Trade Staal to Canes if possible for 7th pick and a prospect.
4. Sign Bolland. Move Miller to wing with Kreider. Love Bolland as a playoff guy and he's a right handed shot which we need big time.
5. Get Allen and McIlrath ready to be a part of the team. Maybe work Lindberg in on the 4th line. Bolland has been brittle so Lindberg might get a lot of time. I think Allen will be real solid by mid season.

Kreider-Stepan-Miller
Pouliot-Brassard-Zucc
Hagelin-Bolland-St. Louis
Dorsett-Moore/Lindberg/Boyle

McDonagh-Girardi
Allen-Klein
Moore-McIlrath

I like the gist of where you are going here, but it is a bit overly optimistic IMO on some of these returns.

Also, no, do not want Bolland.
Miller with Kreider + MSL without further delay!!!!!!!!!!!!

I leave you guys with this today.

Girardi - not enough for 1stOA
Hags - not enough for 1stOA

Girardi + Hagelin = reasonably substantial overpay for 1st pick.
WE UNDERSTAND YOU HAVE TO OVERPAY HERE.

Adjusting for discount that you have to overpay, Hags + Gir = somewhat overpay.
= reasonably substantial overpay for 1st pick. Enough to get job done and get pick and also we can live with given return is Ekblad.

Buchnevich = nice LW who could look good next to Barkov, already has a year under his belt, copy of coffee later this year, competes next. For this I ask 2015 FL 2nd

so:
Girardi + Hagelin + Buchnevich
for
FL 2014 1st (1OA = Ekblad) + 2015 FL 2nd

While painful to lose Hags,
this
creates $$ for Staal
creates $$ for Zuc
replaces Girardi $ with ELC who has potential to add size + righty shot for PP.

This, coupled with BRichards buyout = enough $ to sign Stralman (4 yrs 4.1)
+ Boyle (3 yrs 10m) + DMoore (decent # will not be too much).

Then we can trade excess and lock up Kreider long term.

------------------

Firmly believe FL would do this. Gives them d-first D to mentor their kids who in a year, year and a half, still has great trade value; + Hags would do wonders for them, helping with any 'win now' situation they have. Don't see they get better offer.

Flip Nash for cap relief. Sign Vrbata short term.

Other deal is to flip for further improvements, and with no primo Cs available now, best move is to try and trade w/EDM or Buf and take Dratsatil

I kno nothing about any of the kids in the draft but this trade makes me happy because it gives us more flexibility with the cap... And I'd still think about moving staal we have to many right handed ds

Over-payment is fine but, why in the 7 hells would you trade one of the few depth players who decided to step his game up huge for the playoffs? Hagelin is a player you win with and there is no reason at all to trade him if they are trying to win 'Cup.

The ROR news out of Col is very intriguing.

I'd seriously consider trading Staal and Dorsett for him. Then resign Stralman.

It all works under the cap. J. Moore plays the first half of the season as our 2nd pair LD, w/ Stralman. If Skjei is convinced to turn pro, he could conceivably be ready by mid-season to take over that spot on the roster.

If he's not ready, there can certainly be some reshifting at the deadline to get a more veteran guy.

We end up with about 1.6 million in free cap space with this line up.

Kreider(2.25)-Stepan(3.075)-Nash(7.8)
Hagelin(2.25)-ROR(6.5)-MSL(5.625)
Miller(.894)-Brass(3.7)-Zucc(4.15)
Lindberg(.675)-Boyle(2.7)-Carcillo(.875)

McD(4.7)-Girardi(5.5)
Moore(1.15)-Stralman(4)
Allen(.925)-Klein(2.9)

Hank(8.5)
Talbot(.56)

Yea, not to continue to beat a dead horse. But ROR would be a damn near perfect add for the NYR.

When everyone was suggesting Staal for him a few days ago, I kind of brushed it aside, imagining that Colorado would relish the opportunity to sign him long-term. Going to arbitration is a huge red-flag for me. Seems obtainable, and jeez if we could get him for a guy who may leave us next year anyway?

23 y/o with massive upside and provides quite a few things we need. Seems like the perfect move.

I'm usually bad with guessing the packages that players warrant. I've come close but I usually think market value will be much less than the Rangers end up paying in the end.

I'd hope Staal + Dorsett could get it done. Would go as far as Staal + Dorsett + Kristo.

I'd like having ROR but putting him on would cause the same financial strain as keeping Brad. Can't resign every player one would like to keep if he was traded for. Trading Staal+ for ROR would probably be okay if a suitable replacement on the left D spot next to Stralman was found, but I don't like the idea of putting someone like Moore next to him. Maybe some money could be saved on the 4th line by slotting in Lindberg and Fast as C/RW and then acquire a cheaper UFA d-man. Someone like Andre Benoit.

ROR is 23 and not even in the prime of his career, Richards is almost 34 and his legs are shot.

I actually think Allen could replace Staal on the 2nd pair. Allen reminds me of Stralman. Solid and dependable.

I'm ok going with a stop-gap in Staal's place if we can add ROR and keep Stralman.

As am I. Stop gap till Skjei. I'm fine with that if we get our future 2c in the process.

What about Crag Smith in Nashville? Played center when he was on Wisconsin and did well on the power play. He's coming off a 24-28-52 year, and he's Badger buddies with Mac and Step

I'm not sure if already posted... but a 2nd chance!?

Lots of talk within NHL circles that COL has or will file "club-elected salary arbitration" on Ryan O'Reilly. If so, it will make waves.
