90% of people attending games don't have much knowledge of hockey. I know people who have season tickets for their local NLA team who couldn't tell you that SKA is a better team than Djurgarden.

It sounds like, there is no real reason for creating CHL for such a clueless crowd of fans.

As far as I know, IIHF didn't create the CHL, a constilation of clubs in europe did.
I believe IIHF only owns a minor share in the league.

IIHF only owns 12% of the CHL, clubs own 60+%. IIHF role is purely administrative. Clubs are the driving force in this and have been all along.

There you go. Without knowing the exact details, I was sure the IIHF wasn't involved in the CHL in a major capacity.
Thanks.

The biggest probblem here is obviously that the IIHF is making the same mistake as with the NHL. Without finding common ground with the KHL(and in contrast to the NHL KHL was willing to find common ground) they will have just another tournament some ppl care for and some don't. They will never come close to football's Champion's League. I think the emphasis is on Rene's focus on making money for himself, i.e. IIHF. Transpiring from his comments about the current WC. The IIHF is not willing to create a real Champion's League.

I'd say the majority of Swedish fans, at least Djurgården fans, could care less if the KHL is in the CHL or not. If the game dates, ticket prices, competition rules etc is good and the marketing is put in place. People will be happy and not give the KHL a thought. If you think there will be an outcry that the CHL doesn't add up because of KHL missing you'll be disappointed.

Bern, Eisbären Berlin or SKA as the opposition. That won't matter one bit. There's no added prestige, rivalry or feeling around KHL-teams for me. And add to that, that the western european teams are much more attractive travel destination for fans.

It's not Champions League then, just a tounament like many others. Maybe entertaining for home fans, but that's it. As simple as that. Who cares if swedish fans care.

Also cut the BS about travel destinations. For Russians for example Minsk is a great travel destination as can be seen right now and Russians spend way more money than Swedes. Yep, every Russian dreams about paying a fortune for a bad beer in Sweden.

Champions Hockey League

This is a huge event fro European teams tomorrow as the 44 A, B and C teams get placed in their pools in Belarus tomorrow. I was wondering where to post this and decided here, I was hoping that we could start a forum for the league itself, anyways. I did my pools tonight and I would love for this topic to get a lot of responses, I am from Canada but will watch as many games as i can for this league. There is a rule in place that there can be no two teams from the same country in the same pool.

This is the league procedure:

The eleven groups will be determined by a draw taking place on 21 May 2014 in Minsk, Belarus. The 44 teams have been ranked and placed into four pots of 11 teams each. Following the draw, each group will consist of one team from each basket. The following criteria was used to rank the teams: 1. Champions of the six founding leagues, 2. Regular season winners of the six founding leagues, 3. Remaining A- and B-license teams according to placing within their leagues, 4. Wild card teams, according to placing finish within their leagues.

The eleven group winners and the five best group runners-up will qualify for the playoffs, which will begin on 4 November 2014 and end with the final on 3 February 2015. It will be played as a single-elimination tournament, meaning that the losing teams in each round are eliminated from the tournament

The question I have is: Who do you see winning the league and why?

Well, Russian teams in the KHL aren't interested in hte CHL. They see it as a threat since it means other top european leagues are going in another direction and are consolidating to become more competitive in revenue, spectaters and talent. It's understandable, but as a swede, I see the KHL as a threat to my domestic league and want no part in it. It's as simple as that. Nothing against Russia or russians, btw.

The draw is being streamed live on SVT.se aswell (with commentary). It's on in 5 min. This will be interesting :)

Hm. They actually look like they're doing it well, bit surprising actually. Maybe, just maybe this could develop in something that really holds some value in peoples hearts.

no chance, read interview with Zaug.

Where are these who talk from? Sweden aguess? They pronounced Finnish (and german) teams horribly, like they tried to make Kärpät and Tappara sound stupid on purpose

"Kjaärpjät"

"Tap ARA tamPERE"

They should've told what players Kärpät has produced too, Like Backström, Granlunds, J. Jokinen, JM Aaltonen (and more NHL players).

It started better than it looks now.

At least they should've taught them to Pronounce the teams.. Or let the representers of the Clubs in the crowds Pronounce them after they are drawn. Well, this is just a draw.
