I also see that Christopher Gibson(2nd round #49 2011) played in his 1st NHL game. That makes 4 out of 6 picks in the 2011 draft, play in an NHL game. That's impressive
Scouting/drafting just keeps hitting balls out of the park
I'd say drafting Gibson in the second round was a pop fly foul ball.
Any update on Lintuniemi's injury?
Mike Amadio watch; 2 goals today (1 pp goal, 1 short handed goal). He now has 12 shorthanded points, and continues to lead his team in scoring; he has 20 more points than the second leading scorer, who is a rookie defenseman.
Recently, I spoke with Battalion assistant coach Ryan Oulahen, who has had the privilege of watching Amadio’s on- and off-ice maturation first-hand in his four years with the club.
“The big thing with Michael is that over the course of his career he has continued to improve his overall strength,†Oulahen said. “He has been able to be harder on pucks, win 1-on-1 battles and most importantly, his shot has turned into a weapon. Michael excels with his vision of the ice and is able to put himself in great scoring chances. Add that to the improvement of his strength, you now are seeing an elite goal scorer.â€
“Forgotten a little bit is his offensive abilities,†Oulahen said. “Michael, with his hockey sense, is a big contributor to the power play with his ability to find open ice and passing ability to find the open man. Over the course of his Battalion career, he has really worked on his game to become better each and every day. He is a pro in the way he approaches the game and prepares for the game. There are no doubts Michael will be ready for the next step of pro hockey.â€
Was expecting more from Schmalz this season. Disappointing even for a 5th rounder.
from Freidman, re: Russian development and Dergachyov:
"After I spoke to Rotenberg, I found a report from Sport-Express’s Igor Eronko indicating St. Petersburg wants to sign two of its good young players to extensions. They are 20-year-old Pavel Buchnevich (taken 75th in 2013 by the Rangers) and 19-year-old Alexander Dergachyov (74th by Los Angeles last June).
Rotenberg said the KHL wants to keep Kovalchuk and Radulov, “because they are the stars of the league. Our fans want to see them.†But he was much more passionate discussing the younger men. He wants them at home, too."
Talked about keeping the young Russians together for development and to keep an eye on them for the Olympics. Makes a lot of sense. Makes you wonder, since that club allegedly is focusing heavily on development too. Maybe an opportunity for a good relationship, but more likely, a roadblock for the org with Dergachev. They were suggesting the Panarin development path.
Amadio is about to break his point total from last year (71) in about 15 less games. He currently has 68 in 49. 8th in OHL scoring, behind some familiar names--DeBrincat, Konecny, Dylan Strome, Tkachuk, Marner, Christian Dvorak, Kevin Labanc (6th round SJ pick who is just RIPPING it up, should be a good player).
Edit; and every one of those guys has MUCH more support; from the top down:
Labanc also has the 9th place scorer, Mangiapane who had over 100pts last year, and is on a 2nd place team in his conference. Top scoring d-man Rasmus andersson too.
Dvorak, Marner, and Tkachuk are ALL on the London Knights together.
Strome and DeBrincat are on the 1st place Erie Otters together. They also have Dermott, Cernak, etc. on D.
Konecny was traded to Sarnia where he's doing well also with Chychrun.
Amadio's next leading scorer is Matthew Santos with 45 points--good for 35th overall.
A small part of me wants the Battalion to get knocked out of the playoffs early see we can get a good look at Amadio in Ontario or Manchester. That's really the last step is see how does in the minors to get a better judge of where he is at. Everything we've been hearing sounds almost too good for me to not be skeptical. Hope I'm wrong and he turns out, no reason right now to say he wont.
Regarding Dergachev, if he signs with St. Peterburg that's it for him as a prospect with the Kings. He isn't going to learn to play the LA system in Russia and if he doesn't know the system he isn't getting a chance with LA. See Prokhorkin as an example.
With Amadio, it's not that I think he's going to be some crazy pro scorer, but even 'defensive' guys have to prove they have an offensive IQ if for no other reason than to READ offensive players at the next level. I think he's going to be a Stoll type (40 point version).
Re: Dergachev Like, even if it's home and they're saying all the right things about you being on the national team, what kind of player WANTS to stay somewhere they're only playing less than 4th line minutes?
I get seniority works a little different there but what a joke. Poor kid.
I have ZERO problem with Russian pride but ****ing prove it.
Spencer Watson is OHL player of the week - 8 points in 2 games - now close to Amadio re points for the season and both well inside the top 20 - these two look really good prospects, although Watson is small - Another prospect going well is Austin Watson for Regina pats - A year younger than Amadio and Spencer - has good size and speed.
I'd say drafting Gibson in the second round was a pop fly foul ball.
Seriously stoked about this Amadio prospect. 5 goals in one game? Difficult at any level.
