Pick the worst playoff performer(s) and move them, and Chara is getting up there in age. It's not easy but I guess those are options.

I question how good this is for the league. Sure, there's parity, but it also makes some good teams worse which can't help the sport. LOL at Boston, though.

The worst performer that makes any money is Boychuk...but he goes to the heart of their identity and they'll be losing two other guys like that this summer. Second-worst is Marchand, and so does he.

Damn. This lower-than-expected cap hit is really, really gonna screw them.

Boston 2014: Identity vs the Cap

Yeah, I don't know what they'll do.

If we Emmanuel Sanders with one of their RFA's then we'll get even for the Steelers, right?

Burmistrov maybe coming back to the nhl (but not for the jets). I might be willing to bite, but this would absolutely necessitate all softness get eliminated from the bottom half of the roster for jam, muscle and drive to the net, with the possible exception of keeping Sutter.

Well these numbers make shopping Martin make even more sense, depending on the return of course. If we could get a maybe 12 -15 first this year along with a decent prospect I would want them to pull the trigger. Two very good forward prospects, another prospect and $5 million in cap relief from today would be golden. It would hurt losing Martin but we do have a ton of depth defensively.

The Pens should be fine this year cap wise... I don't think they HAVE to dump anyone to fill out their roster.

With the news of the $69M salary cap, I hope Rutherford trades Dupuis and Scuderi tonight.

Scuderi is a definite, he sucked last year in the playoffs and will not fit what Mike Johnston wants to do.

Losing Dupuis would suck, he adds speed, grit, leadership and strong two way play to this team but like others have said, he's older, coming off a major knee injury. Close to $4M is too much of a gamble for this team. Especially one that should be playing on the 3rd line.

They may not have to, but I think they should. Rob Scuderi for sure. Maybe Dupuis. Even though he's cheap and won't save us much cap, maybe Craig Adams also. Barring who their replacements are, instantly younger Penguins team.

Ok, if Boston resigns Iggy, this is what we should do. A 2 year offer sheet to Reilly Smith at 3.3M per, I don't think Boston can match this. Plus, its only a second round pick for compensation so we give up waaaaaay less than his value. And of course we hurt Boston in the process. Of course, this means we would have to hear Boston fans cry for years to come. But lets face it, that is likely to happen regardless of what we do.

I'd love to get Smith here. That's a good idea.

I do agree that losing Martin would hurt but, I don't think our depth would cover the loss. Right now Martin is our only reliable defenseman. Who knows what Letang were going to see next season, and both Scuderi and Orpik suck. Maatta, though he was great, only managed success for about 2/3 of the year. This offseason he has to recover from surgery and may regress next year. Everyone else, thanks to DB, is a unknown imo.

Boston isn't resigning Iggy.

And I do not think that we have the pick to make an offer sheet.

Finally, if someone does they will merely need to make a (painful) trade. That likely is going to happen anyways.

I'd be fine with that. Shero would have been too much of a ***** to do something like that.

Keep in mind that Reilly Smith would not be obligated to sign the offer sheet, and indeed could hold out for a higher offer sheet from a team with more cap space.

If they want a legit bottom six, add a winger for Sid and keep their current players?

I think they do.
