WBS blogger. i suspect he's leaning on a Rossi tweet.

here (in conforming with Darth Vitale's philosophies regarding he-who-should-not-be-linked) is Chris Nichols mentioning that Rossi is the source of the Martin speculation.

I can understand why Martin wouldn't be ready to start talking extension at this point. If I were in his position, I'd want to see what moves the new FO tandem is going to make and get a better grasp on what kind of system I'd be playing in.

I'd definitely shop Martin if he's not willing to extend this summer. Have to be creative this offseason with so many holes up front.

Martin would be worth more to us for a playoff run than any return we'd get.

Well, they'll only use one forward on the ice at any given time. The other four skaters will be defensemen. It's a whole new 1-4 style of play!

You just changed the game yo.

The thing is that we do have a lot of kids on the brink and need to bring them in sometime to develop.

Niskanen and likely Orpik and gone. Engelland is a UFA.

Leaving us with Letang (7.5 M per year), Martin (5 M per year), Scuderi (3.375 M per year), Maatta and Bortuzzo (1.5 million for both).

Pouliot should make the roster in the middle of the year. Dumoulin could make it out of training camp. Harrington and Murray could even be in the mix at some point.

Martin was our best defender last year, but if we could get a long term solution for Crosby on wing, a kid with potential I might take my chances with giving some of the kids a chance.

We have a year to give them time to make their mistakes.

And Martin is gone next year anyways.

Why?

It'd take a couple longterm assets at forward for it to make sense. Just saying I'm hoping JR has everyone on the table sans Sid/Geno in the right deal.

Haha

Boston.

$67,582,500 committed to 18 players, including $4.75 million in bonuses to Iggy from last year.

Good luck with that.

Probably a discussion for another thread and day, but this looks like a real problem. They can move Boychuk and just play Bartkowski, but are they still the Big Bad Bs without guys like Thornton, Boychuk, Iginla/Horton, and Chara closing in on 40?

Since cap was expected to be like 2 mil higher I'm sure GMJR will re - evaluate potential offers on scuderi etc wich he thought was to weak before . We need to shed some dead weight

lol goodbye to 2 of Letang/Neal/Scuds/Dupuis

Please the last 2. However, with that low cap, I'm concerned that Neal may have to be moved to accommodate to the cap. Hopefully we get something like Coyle, Zucker and a 1st, 2 guys who could play in the NHL right now.

We have $60,275,000 committed to 14 players. Likely one reason that we are shopping Martin, but still it is not that dire. Even standing pat we have just under $9 million to sign 9 players. It is going to be tight, but a number of teams have it worse.

If we could find a taker for Scuderi and/or Dupuis though I wouldn't object.

They're good, they've got Bobby Robins. The exciting, young 32 year old AHL sideshow.

Yeah, see what Johnston and his system are like and what JR and co are doing before committing.

I'm vaguely afraid of what JR might do.

I've always felt it makes a ton of sense to trade Martin for a young winger. Yes he played well in the playoffs (though he made several egregious blunders that never get talked about), but he's a veteran D-man and we have the young assets to replace him (eventually if not right away).

Everybody has been focused on dumping Scuderi, but Martin is the one with great value. Will we struggle badly without Martin? Maybe. But it's not like we don't have the POTENTIAL to be a very solid team on the blueline, and with the right coaching...
