I wouldn't be surprised if it was 2026. That's fairly normal for a trade structured in this sort of manner.
Actually I'm wrong anyways. We have one from the Ceci trade. We just don't know which it'll be until the season ends because of the Lilljgren trade.

We also don't have our own 2026 from the EK65 trade lol. We're also down 5th and 6th rounders in 2026 so I'd rather not move any more from that year.

Hell, while we're at it, we don't have our 3rd in 2027 either.

I'm sure there may be a 3rd round pick sent to us renting out some of our other players this deadline too. Ceci is probably worth a 3rd. Blackwood might fetch a 3rd. Sturm could though that is a stretch.

Value probably doesn't correlate with level-of-play at the moment. His main value is as a Top-6 C + #1unit PP guy. Most playoff teams have better or equal calibre players already in those positions. So you're looking at a situation where it's definitely best to wait until closer to the deadline to see if there are injuries anywhere that drive up the need.

As others have said, his effectiveness for the team acquiring him will probably depend on his usage, and the system in place. He's a peacock; you've gotta let him fly. But don't go chasing waterfalls.

His value likely falls somewhere between some of the more reasonable asks from Sharks fans, and some of the less putrid offers from other fan bases. I feel as though Winnipeg, Boston, Carolina, and New Jersey would be solid fits.

The equivalent value of two 2nd rounders, or we probably keep him.

A 3rd max.
He's still a good player, but he isn't a great center on the dot, and his defense is overrated.
i.e. he might work as a 3rd line center, but he won't provide the grit you want,
Or he could be a 2nd line / power play guy.
But on a contender?
What other player with his point totals has sold as low? Not even one-dimensional guys go that cheap.

I think 2 2nds is a fair guess for Granlund, but I do think it's possible that he could bring back a 1st. Monahan last year was in a very similar situation (cap dump to a bad team, played big minutes on a bad team with success) and Winnipeg traded a 1st for him. I don't think a team should pay that price for him, but it wouldn't be surprising if someone did.

It really just depends on what teams are looking for a center. Granlund is likely being targeted as a 2C acquisition, but what contenders have a hole at 2C and also have the PP1 opportunities to give Granlund? Not entirely sure of what team fits that. Ironically Winnipeg makes a lot of sense because Namestnikov is their 2C right now, but I'm very skeptical they trade a 1st 2 years in a row for the same thing.

They also have a really bad track record with Finns. I think it even started back in the Atlanta days with guys like Kallio and Nurminen not playing to their highest potential.

I think more likely that they shell out assets for a defenceman, Pettersson or Andersson potentially

Monahan was also making under 2 and SJ can't retain on Granlund so that may limit the value they get back

The Monahan, Kuznetsov, and Hertl trades showed last deadline that teams need centers and will pay up or get creative to get them if they have to.

I think a team tells themselves he can play center for them and gives up a first+.

I mean, he is a center. He's much better at center than on wing.

If Nelson and Malkin are genuinely available, then perhaps Granlund's value suffers a bit, but I really don't think Malkin is going to be traded and I bet the Isles end up in a playoff race and decide not to move Nelson.

I think he's going to be a major target for Toronto and at that price? I'd jump at that.
Toronto is currently in a position where they'd need to have a 3rd team retain 50% on Granlund. I also don't know if they feel like they have cap dumps to send back as well but depending on those factors could influence the asking price.

at the deadline about 80% of Granlund's contract will have been paid if the Sharks retain 50%, and another team retains 25% that's about 250K needed to fit in Granlund, that wouldn't be that hard.

Even at only 50% retention that's still only 500K needed that's not that hard

Sharks have already used up all three retention spots- Karlsson, Burns, Hertl

Still have to make the cap work and the Sharks don't have a retention slot to use. A 3rd team is going to knock it down to 2.5 mil cap for the Leafs and probably cost a 4th round pick to that team. The Sharks can take any cap dumps needed to make it work. If you want it cheaper than that, you'd need to get a 4th team involved and probably a 5th or 6th rounder to get it down to 1.25 mil but I don't think that's how this'll work itself out.

The Leafs have the perfect cap dump if a team knocks it down to 2.5.

His name is David Kampf he makes 2.4 so It's damn near perfect.

SJ not being able to retain isn't great for anybody because SJ can't retain so you have to think that would impact what they can get to some degree.

And for double retention a 4th team would have to be involved and that might be NHL history, I don't know that there has ever been a 4 team trade.

I Know I've been watching NHL hockey for almost 25 years I've never seen it.

I'd like to see it.

I'd be surprised if the Sharks took Kampf back in this sort of arrangement but didn't ask for a 1st but I suppose it's possible.
