Marchand is a perennial 20 goal scorer, and will be a consistent 20-30-50 guy for the next decade. He's FAR more valuable than Smith. Far, far more.
(and it pains me to say that, because Marchand is a POS, but dude has skill that can't be denied. Dude's the only Bruin I "dislike" as a fan.)

Paille & Campbell are dime-a-dozen, IMO. Good players to have when you have them, everyone loves a good lunchpail player, but never guys you'd say "they are too valuable to trade!!!" about.

Anyways, I have a party waiting for me, so if you'll excuse me, I'm going to get ripped. Adios!

And miss an internet debate with me? BrawlFan?!? Alright, suit yourself.

But my point is that if you trade Smith we get softer and would need to replace him. He's on a good contract and you may as well keep him and try and pry someone else.

At the end of the day tho everyone is expendable so maybe Hemsky is the way. I would just hate to turn into the late 90's/early 00 senators who couldnt stop Gary friggin Roberts year after year.

I mean Alyn friggin McCaully killed us one year.

if and only if Spezza & Horton are healthy at the same time

If and when ? Spezza bad back (usually chronic with these things), Horton is slowly breaking down. Great player but he will get over paid and not sure he isn't in the beginning of Wendell Clark breakdown mode !!!

Bickell is a bottom 6 player like clarkson. If we need to round out our bottom 6 then these are good moves.

We need a Horton or Dupuis if FA is the way we are going and even then I think the average fan would expect to much from them.

If Bickell is a bottom 6 player what's Dupuis? Hahaha

Agreed, people on here just don't understand bottom 6 talent & their importance & potential with experience. If they ever put Smith on LW in the top 6 he has the potential to be another Andrew Ladd. I remember saying that Ladd should be in the top 6 yrs ago when Ladd was in Chicago & people here called him a bottom six scrub. Now he is the captain in Winnipeg & is a legitimate top 6 powerforward. Smith just needs a little more time to mature, physically fill out & get more experience & he'll be set.

no you are simply over evaluating his bottom 6 ability. and given you are the author of many of the most awful trade proposals in Sens board history im not sure you're qualified to assess other people's "undertstanding" of anything.
I agree with those suggesting Smith might be a few bricks short of a full load.
I had high hopes for him, but he just keeps making the same stupid mistakes over and over again.

1. If you are Zach Smith and have the kind of role smith does you simply cannot turn the puck over in as many bad spots as he frequently does.

2. he has an uncanny ability to miss the net. its simply amazing how often he does not hit the net.

3. He is becoming more leadfooted, so much so that he has a hard time being effective on the forecheck, and certainly from point to point, stopping and starting he cannot generate enough pace to get where he needs to be before the pucks is gone - or generate enough speed to hit someone with anything behind it.

4. ....which leads to - he is not a scorer and that's fine but what he must do to be a useful member of the team is play a tough, rugged, mean style of play - unfortunately he doesnt hit hard, rarely gets there in time for his physical play to be effective and ends up pushing guys very hard...
He'll fight, great - so will Greening. how about fighting to change the pace of the game rather than well " i guess its go time now, so lets fight "

5. Mindless penalty machine

I just find his game to be somewhat lazy.
He seems like a big, medium speed, kinda rugged player with little finishing ability and a low hockey IQ.
Can we not find someone to play his 4th line role who is meaner? or harder? or faster? or all of those things?

You forgot that he (Zach Smith) is also a mindless penalty machine.

I'm happy with Zack Smith and apparently the coaching staff is too. Most importantly MacLean was very impressed with him. I think that says a lot more than this topic does about him.

Coaches often defend players and rarely say anything bad about them during the offseason while under contract. Smith had an up and down year as most of the team was adjusting to a new role, himself included.

Smith is ok, good contract, no need to trade him unless part of a package deal.

well that's it then. no point in discussing it i guess or having an opinion on the matter.
They want him to succeed, as do i but i dont have to have press conferences and nobody cares what i say or think so i can speak my mind about players whom ive watched every game of their NHL careers.

The papers asking me as GM at a press conference:

"So Wondercarrot, what did you think of Smith's year"

- really great, we overcame a lot of adversity and Zack was asked to play so many roles on the team and i just thought he responded really well. great team guy, can play him anywhere in the lineup.
really looking forward to his development as a leader on this team."

- in private: "if Zack Smith takes another goddamned $*^$^& penalty 200 feet from our end, im going to have Pageau gouge he fu&*(&*ing eyes out."

i'm not the biggest fan of smith, but at least he is only 25. hopefully he has a big yr coming up to build on the yr he had 2 seasons ago when he scored 14 goals. He just needs to play a simple game, drive the net more and play more physical (neil had over 200 hits this yr, smith had 97)

I've never been one to limit discussion, but I think that it says something when other teams covet a player (Smith) and the coach openly says positive things about that player. MacLean has shown he has no reservations about (respectively) calling a spade a spade.

Look ive been a big Smith fan, which its why i was disappointed with his game this year despite some of the good things he did.
I believe he has good value and would be a very useful piece in a trade to a team that requires a 3rd or 4th line center.

IMO we are not that team.
IMO we will be a better team with Spezza, Turris, Zibinejad and Pageau at center.
we were lacking in speed this year i think we need what pageau can bring down the middle. Maybe he was a fluke and im being shortsighted but i dont think so - that kid can flat out play. He's fast, aggressive, tough and smart.

I suppose you move Zib to the wing but he seems more effective at center to me.
Regardless we have a lot of bodies and not enough roster spots and to me Smith packaged with other pieces provides a valuable package to get a player we want without impacting our roster much given our depth at center. other guys we cant/ dont want to trade ie. Zib , or dont have value to trade (not that i want to).

Smith, Ceci and our 1st to me is the biggest value package Ottawa can offer with the least impact on our team and system.

He's a tweener. Not what we need. Bickell at least provides something we need. Size and hitting. He's like a better version of Latendresse.

yes
I'd rather sign Stalberg than Bickell.

He should be cheaper after these playoffs and imo is the better player.
