"Breaking the bank" we wouldn't be getting Malkin. A player like the ones that have already been mentioned, a proven player, would help this team.

The waiting game you speak of is probably the approach I would take too, but this might be Alfie's last year(if he even plays) and I would definitely not refuse acquiring a top-six forward and D to give the team the best chance possible. Not more than 2 players though because it could potentially affect team chemistry.

Guys like Briere, Ryder, Clowe, etc. Guys that are within reach... I don't see them improving the team very much.

It has to be a big player. Eriksson, Vanek, 1st line players. Ottawa has enough depth that depth guys like Clowe won't make a difference.

But, for true 1st line guys, you will need to break the bank for them. Which is not what I want

I mean guys like Horton, Bickell, Briere, Filppula and possibly Cammalleri.

Ryder and Clowe suck, at least for our team.

I am pretty concerned that Murray might go after Bickell. The dude is not very good and is riding the Hawks top guns and looking good that way. Don't want to overspend on those types of players...

Horton is out of reach. The bank would have to be broken and then some for him. With his concussion and injury issues I would not do that

Filppula and Cammalleri... maybe at the right price. There is a need on LW and they could make the Sens a legit 3 scoring line team. So I'm not opposed to that.

There aren't too many guys like Cammalleri and Filppula out there who are available though. I'm really cheap so I would likely strike out on both lol

Smith is a great hockey player.

He's got wheels , good hockey sense , and size. These are the type of player Murray wants. Not to mention players like Smith take longer to develop. You can see that Smith is much more than a grinder by the way he attempts to make those skilled offensive passess and plays. I'd expect Smith to become a 20-20 physical player with a polished defensive game. Basically the ultimate third liner .

Who ever called him a dumb hockey player i seriously question your mental capabilities.

Depends who Bickell plays with but Briere is underrated after the bad past year and a half he's had. I think he can get at least 50 pts with PP time and that's being conservative.

Due to the discussion on the main boards, what does everyone think of something along the lines of

Michalek-Spezza-Hemsky
Greening-Turris-Silf
Hoffman-Zib-Condra
Conacher-Pageau-Neil

Still feel a little uneasy about the left side, though if Alfie came back or Stone made the team I guess Silf has played the left before IIRC. Centre is still amazing, and we would still have JOB and Da Costa in case of injury.

Good job you're not Melnyk then eh? The cold hard truth is you need to spend to achieve success.

Bickell is a bottom 6 player like clarkson. If we need to round out our bottom 6 then these are good moves.

We need a Horton or Dupuis if FA is the way we are going and even then I think the average fan would expect to much from them.

Bickell is a very solid player

He'll likely get overpaid but that's what happens when you're an FA and you played outstanding hockey in the playoffs

I'd definitely be ok with Murray going out to get him, he is exactly what we need

Filled in nicely at times, but for him to be effective he needs to play simple and 4th line seems best for him.

He was nearly a ppg player when playing with Alfie, for what it's worth. Also scored something like 2 goals in the 6 games that he spent regular time there. I know it's a small sample size, but you can see that he has potential there just by watching his tendencies. I don't get where the 'dumb' hockey player thing comes from...just another myth perpetrated by the board. He was asked to play very defensively and you could tell a lot of the time this year, he wouldn't spend a lot of time trying to create plays in the offensive zone and he wasn't as hard in on the boards as usual because he'd be so quick to start heading back once the play looked like it was flipping.

Just to go back to this comment, I suppose Pageau could be used as the 4th centre, with Smith on the left side of him since Pageau is right handed.

Michalek - Spezza - Stone/FA/Trade
Greening - Turris - Alfredsson
Conacher - Zibanejad - Silfverberg
Smith - Pageau - Neil

Kassian

I feel like if we're going to do that I'd rather see Pageau and Zibanejad switched.

Conacher - Pageau - Silfverberg/Condra
Smith - Pageau - Neil

Then have Silfverberg play the top line if we don't acquire a top line winger. Though to be honest I still prefer Smith as a centre and I think that he's heavily underrated.

Zibanejad - Smith - Silfverberg
Conacher - Pageau - Neil

If ppl are ready to trade Smith then you may as well start the "Leafs are bullies" threads and get ready to get Domi'd, Tucker'd, Robert's, Corson'd, McCabe'd, etc...

Our team needs Smith more than Hemsky.

Agreed completely.

Like that time Zach Smith beat Matt Cooke into a coma after he cut Karlsson's achilles, right?

And the time he pummeled Chris Kreider for giving Anderson that high ankle sprain that cost him a Vesina this year.

Oh, and that time last year he went after Hagelin for concussing Alfredsson and got sweet, sweet retribution.

... all classic examples of just how effective Zach Smith is at being a deterrent...

Ottawa was battling for a playoff position all year and didnt have Spezza. Smith was playing huge minutes for us as a 2C and was relied on to make sure the other teams players didnt score.

And I know you'll prob start throwing stats but take a look at Paul McLeans season ending presser if you want to know what he thinks of Smith's year. He stated himself that he relied on Smith to not let the other teams guys score and that he did a good job of it. Smith had a different role this year and it was to be on the ice and play good D while being physical.

Bonk, if it was your way, you'd have a team full of sissys

I'm starting to see this.

How about the time he stuck up for teammates when Clarckson was running wild? or the time he help stick up for Karlsson when Kane hit him dirty?( the brawl).
See, i can cherry pick as well.

Yes, because I don't believe Stage Fighting has any merit, and I don't see Zach Smith as being a particularly effective deterrent to "bullies", I clearly prefer a team full of sissies. Obviously.

Never mind the fact that I've continuously argued on these boards in favor of having a tough team, that physical play absolutely matters... you just go with the "you prefer sissies" thing because that fits your narrative.

It's a hell of a straw man you're building, there. Worthy of Webster's. I'm not even mad, I'm actually impressed. Well done. When I end up in my 40's, broke, and depending on teaching a night class at the local college on logical fallacies to pay my rent, I'll be sure to have you as a guest-lecturer.

Well this is how you get a tough team. Not everyone is going to be a Nathan Horton or Milan Lucic. I hate to break this to you but even a real tough team like Boston has a Brad Marchand, Gregory Campbell, Danielle Paille who play tough and step up from time to time. So you can say all you want that you would like a tough team but it doesnt happen if you trade them away or dont bring them in.

Fact is the tough and gritty players with skill are not so easy to find. Both Bickell and Clarkson will be getting top dollar and they are HUGE risks when it comes to living up to those contracts.

Marchand is a perennial 20 goal scorer, and will be a consistent 20-30-50 guy for the next decade. He's FAR more valuable than Smith. Far, far more.
(and it pains me to say that, because Marchand is a POS, but dude has skill that can't be denied. Dude's the only Bruin I "dislike" as a fan.)

Paille & Campbell are dime-a-dozen, IMO. Good players to have when you have them, everyone loves a good lunchpail player, but never guys you'd say "they are too valuable to trade!!!" about.

Anyways, I have a party waiting for me, so if you'll excuse me, I'm going to get ripped. Adios!
