A couple of things.
I don't know what AV wants, or what he will want after coaching this team for a while, but a coach who wants a 2 + 2 line setup, but don't have the material for it, often adjusts. Looking at Vancouver, he used more of a 1+2+1 setup. The second line sometimes did not play more 5 on 5 than the 3rd line. We saw that with Renney alot too, he had a pretty weak 2nd line and played that line less and the 3rd and 4th more.
My point is just, I could see AV creating a second line that is pretty weak in NY (with guys like Zucc in it) but a stronger 3rd line (Callahan?). Time will tell.
Second, people trash Lecavalier and our UFA signings etc. Lecavalier will get paid this time too, we should have no illusions. There are. I centers available, and Lecavalier is good around kids.
But, if we buy our BR, our PP will not get better. We shouldn't overrate Stepan. Stepan is FAR from a good top line center on a contender. At best, he is on par with a deep center chart like Krejci, Bergeron and co in Boston.
Brassard up until recently wasnt even counted on in CBJ. I loved Brass in NY last season, but, let's remember that he did not have to carry a big load here. If we buy out BR there will be a lot of pressure on him.
Getting Lecavalier on a decent contract (say 8, 6, 4, 4 and 4m per with a cap hit at 5.2m per), we get someone who will not fix, no, but atleast help our PP and be an important cog on it; we get someone who can take of pressure of Stepan and Brassard; we get someone who is good on FOs and defensively.
Slats should definitely be interested in Lecavalier. 5m per for Lecavalier doesn't cripple us.
Clowe-Lecavalier-Nash //Plays top line minutes.
Kreider-Brass-Zucc //Plays alot when they play well, plays less when they don't.
Hagelin-Stepan-Callahan //Is put on the ice to get the puck up ice, take important FOs, late in games etc.
Lecavalier can then step down in the lineup as he grows older. He would fit very well with wingers like Kreider, Zucc and Fasth among others. Thomas!
