My god, Del Zotto for Clutterbuck? Not only do we already have Dorsett; a very similar player to Clutterbuck, but Cal is likely wanting a pay raise if Minny are looking to deal him. And then signing Nyström on top of this for ~$1.8M? We would be paying five 3rd/4th line tweeners ~$8.95M, and that is if Clutterbuck would sign for ~$2.25M which may be too conservative. Are you aware there is a salary cap in this league?
Boston is famous for having a great 4th line, but they are only paying $4M for their three players. Nyström + Boyle + Dorsett/Clutterbuck would cost 5.13/5.75M, and I doubt that potential line would outperform Boston's line who has played together for at least three seasons now.
Splurging on "character" bottom-6:ers in free agency is the fastest way to get saddled with bad contracts. 4th liners should be on short (1-2 years), cheap contracts and be let go if they underperform or get too expensive. Sign someone who can score and bring something besides overrated traits such as toughness or size to the lineup.
Prust's value wasn't his toughness, it was his intensity and tenacity. Rupp was tough, but he was useless. Guys like Haley and Newbury seem to think they have to be tough to stick in the NHL, but this just makes them useless running around collecting penalties while missing defensive assignments. If they would play the type of game they do in the AHL they'd be a lot more useful.
Sign a guy like Clarke MacArthur, Mason Raymond, or Viktor Stålberg for ~2-3M on a short term deal instead who can play in the top-9 and let's just stick with the expensive tweeners we have in Pyatt, Boyle, and Dorsett.
EDIT: Hagelin for Clutterbuck! How would that improve our team in any way?
