Speculation: 2013 Offseason Thread Part V: Streit signs with PHI (4 years, $5.25M per)

The bottom 6 absolutely needs to be improved upon. The 4th line has been a mess for years, it's about time they adequately addressed it.

Sather needs to stop targeting slow, lumbering enforcer-types for the 4th line. Getting some speed and mobility on that line is a must, other teams skate circles around our 4th line.

This is why I'm not opposed to giving a guy like Ryan Bourque a shot. He's undersized, but he brings tenacity and speed to a 4th line that needs it. Bourque is basically Darroll Powe plus some offensive ability. Guys like Yogan and Palmieri should be given a shot, as well.

Bourque's offensive ability hasn't shown that it can translate to the pro game.

Dont want Philly to get him. I find it funny that the Flyers never have a goalie, lets keep it that way.

Make trades to fill out the bottom six. Go with young players. Paille and Campbell were acquired in trades. Paille has two GWG in the finals. 3 of his 4 goals in the playoffs are GWG. The players are out there. Chicago went with young players to fill out their bottom six. Frolik was acquired for Skille. Stalberg was acquired in the Versteeg trade. The Rangers have so many pro scouts. Go find the players.

My god, Del Zotto for Clutterbuck? Not only do we already have Dorsett; a very similar player to Clutterbuck, but Cal is likely wanting a pay raise if Minny are looking to deal him. And then signing Nyström on top of this for ~$1.8M? We would be paying five 3rd/4th line tweeners ~$8.95M, and that is if Clutterbuck would sign for ~$2.25M which may be too conservative. Are you aware there is a salary cap in this league?

Boston is famous for having a great 4th line, but they are only paying $4M for their three players. Nyström + Boyle + Dorsett/Clutterbuck would cost 5.13/5.75M, and I doubt that potential line would outperform Boston's line who has played together for at least three seasons now.

Splurging on "character" bottom-6:ers in free agency is the fastest way to get saddled with bad contracts. 4th liners should be on short (1-2 years), cheap contracts and be let go if they underperform or get too expensive. Sign someone who can score and bring something besides overrated traits such as toughness or size to the lineup.

Prust's value wasn't his toughness, it was his intensity and tenacity. Rupp was tough, but he was useless. Guys like Haley and Newbury seem to think they have to be tough to stick in the NHL, but this just makes them useless running around collecting penalties while missing defensive assignments. If they would play the type of game they do in the AHL they'd be a lot more useful.

Sign a guy like Clarke MacArthur, Mason Raymond, or Viktor Stålberg for ~2-3M on a short term deal instead who can play in the top-9 and let's just stick with the expensive tweeners we have in Pyatt, Boyle, and Dorsett.

EDIT: Hagelin for Clutterbuck! How would that improve our team in any way?
Completely agreed 100%. The fascination with size and 'toughness' never ceases to amaze me. I'm sure people were upset when big bad Mike Rupp was traded away. I'd rather have better hockey players.

Clutterbuck is so overrated. Wild fans like to compare him to Callahan all the time and I just laugh.

His "hits" are trailing the play most of the time, actually hurting his team by taking himself out of the backcheck. Has scored a Boyle/Clarkson level of lucky points.

I am all about adding a little more quality grit (aka not Rupp or Brashear) but I think Clutterbuck is really overrated (and will be overpaid) for what he brings.

Agreed. He's a pansy IMO. I watched Wild games and he isn't a dominant physical presence, despite his hit totals. A lot like Boyle's inflated hit totals. He throws the occasional borderline/dirty hit and everyone loses their minds over that.

I think the Rangers should go after a player like Marcel Goc. AV would love a player like him, his advanced statistics are through the roof. Excellent 3rd line C with a decent offensive skill set.

I wanted Goc when he was a UFA 2 years ago. I wanted him at the deadline this year. If we can get him, I'd be pretty happy.

Goc would be awesome. IMO one of the most underrated centers in the league.

Ah, we're back to the "we have enough 3rd/4th liners" schtick. Could have sworn bottom-six depth was a problem a few weeks ago.

Clutterbuck has better hands than Dorsett. Having two bottom-six RW's who are gritty, can agitate, and chip in some points isn't a bad thing. Wanting to improve the bottom six doesn't mean you're ignoring the other areas that need work. Get a grip, kids.

we don't move Hagelin to do that lol, just sign someone in that case

GVT is meant to be a standalone stat like Rangerboy is using it, but what do you mean it relies upon your teammates? Certainly no more than goals or assists.

And wouldn't you agree that Stepan's performance improved markedly, and Kovalchuk's did the opposite?

Not to mention Kovalchuk's injury.

It depends on what Florida would want for him.

He seemed to have a real down year this year and only has one year remaining on the contract. Miller or Lindberg should be ready soon for the 3C role, so he'd probably only be here for 1 year at most.

A pick and/or B prospect sure, but I think Florida will want more.

This is the worst nightmare

As I reported in today’s newspaper, Dany Heatley can’t be bought out because he is as of now deemed an “injured player.†He is doing well in his rehab and expected to be ready by training camp. Amazing bad luck for the Wild. A guy that never gets hurt (80+ games six of the previous seven years) gets hurt on the night it makes the Jason Pominville trade against his former team, San Jose, after an infraction from his former teammate, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, AFTER the final buzzer.

(Ironically, I'm hearing the man he was traded for – San Jose’s Martin Havlat – also has offseason abdominal surgery and thus can’t be bought out).

The Rangers can't risk this scenario with Bad Richards. They can't be the Wild and Sharks this time next June and they're stuck with Richards.

I also think if you do the math, if Tom Gilbert isn’t traded, my gut says he will be a compliance buyout just because it’s an easy way to get $4 million in flexibility. (Remember, because of the decrease in the salary cap, teams are permitted a total of two compliance buyouts that can be used this offseason and/or next. A compliance buyout allows you to buy out a player at two-thirds his salary and have the total cap hit forgiven). There are also still regular buyouts, which would likely be used on cheaper players (only you’d be charged the cap hit).

As someone who watches most Wild games, he is massively overrated. He's had one good year a la Boyle, when he was relied on in the top six because of injuries. Downhill from there. He never knows when to start something either, Game 3 of the Hawks/Wild series, he tried to rattle Toews and then the Hawks scored a late tying goal.

If we're going to make a trade with Minny, I'd much rather have Setoguchi. Speedy sniper who is almost as physical as Clutterbuck. Perfect guy to push Callahan to the 3rd line.

Setoguchi had one good year (65 pts), other than that his highest has been 41 points over 72 games. I would like him and his contract is good, but I dont believe he would push Cally down.

please help me here. our problem really isnt our bottom 6.

our problem is goal scoring 5 on 5 and creating chances. and the powerplay.

we have suffered through a goal scoring drought long enough. adding talent and skill to our top 6 enables us to better align our roster so that players are playing on the correct lines, with the correct linemates, and in situations where they have the best chance to succeed.

add some skill to our top 6 and we improve our bottom 6. period.

So many teams are re-signing their players. The Rangers are sitting on their hands. The GM was on vacation in California until today when he had to board a flight to Boston for NHL GM meetings tomorrow. They haven't officially announced the hiring of Vigneault because Sather was in California. It took the Dallas Stars offering Vigneault a contract to wake Slats out of his slumber or the coaching search would still be going on. 70 year old President and GM.
