HOPEFULLY SWEET FOR SAUER

The Rangers flew injured and inactive defenseman Michael Sauer, 25, to New York this week to evaluate his condition, the Daily News has learned. If the organization believes there is a chance Sauer can recover from the concussion symptoms that have sidelined him since Dec. 5, 2011, GM Glen Sather can qualify the soon-to-be restricted free agent and retain his rights for the upcoming season relatively cheaply. Sauer remained at his home in Minneapolis this season, away from the team, and his condition is not believed to have improved significantly, but the evaluation will tell the Rangers more.

i saw that colton orr got 950k per year...i expected that he'd get more. i suspect that salaries are gonna drop a lot with the new salary cap. just a thought.

The salary cap for 13-14 is at exactly the same level it was for 11-12. It will more than likely go up by a couple of million for 14-15. All that talk about how they need to bring salary costs down, and it will never have gone below where it was when they were too high. Smoke and mirrors.

The Rangers can retain Sauer's rights by giving him a QO. Sauer doesn't have to sign the QO for the Rangers to retain his rights. IF Sauer signs the $1.25M QO,his SPC counts against the 50 SPC limit and it counts against the cap. The Rangers and Sauer's agent Ben Hankinson could agree Sauer won't sign the QO until the day comes where Sauer can resume his career. Sauer got paid $2.5M for 19 games.

Thanks and the bolded seems to make a lot of sense for both sides.

Schenn defensively is not that great. Physically he is bigger than Richards. Offensively I think he has a higher ceiling. Defensively? Not close.

And you don't have to sell me on Schenn. I was one of the only people calling for the Rangers to trade Gaborik for Schenn + Simmonds a couple of years ago. I love the way he plays. However, showing the TOI stat and showing how much more Schenn supposedly scores than Couturier is incredibly misleading.

Youtube videos?

Couturier is going to be a very good player in the league. Schenn is 2 years older and let's not act as if he is setting the world on fire with his offense. Most of his scoring came from the wing this past year and even with less responsibility he scored at a ~40-45 point pace.

If the Rangers could get either, I would be ecstatic.

Completely agreed, I'd much prefer Couturier. Great post. Underrated player this season.

People fail to mention that Sean Couturier demolished the QMJHL in his final season there for some reason. He was 2nd in QMJHL PPG as an undrafted, underaged player. The player ahead of him was an overager.

Since he's stepped into the NHL, he's been entrusted in to defense first and defense only role on a weak defensive Flyers team. The reason he isn't scoring as much as B.Schenn is simply due to his poor zone starts and tougher defensive assignments.

Exactly. Super high hockey IQ and his body is still developing. When he grows into his body, you are going to see a bigger version of Patrice Bergeron.

:handclap:

I was about to edit my post on the exact same player as a comparative. :) Nice catch.

I'd rather Brayden Schenn than Couturier but people pointing out his low stats are being short sighted. He plays on one of the worst defensive teams in the league, he's got to pick up a lot of defensive slack for the Flyers, even though he's only 20. I'd LOVE either of them on the Rangers, but Couturier has far more upside than some of you give him credit for. I'd definitely take either him or Schenn.

Same here. As puckrush mentioned, he is a nice gritty player that is excellent on the PK, but I'm not sure if that warrants a role at 2C.

I see a lot of offensive potential in Ferraro. I see a future player that is the complete package. IMO, i see a bit of Zach Parise in him. At the center position.

He's going to be the kind of player that does everything for his team. If he were a bit bigger/stronger in his draft year he would have gone much higher. Another gem pick by Detroit.

I disagree about Schenn/Couturier. I don't see the Bergeron comparison. Bergeron is a great skater. Couturier is an average-at-best skater and IMO it will always stop him from being a #1. Schenn is going to be a #1. We have penalty killers. We don't have enough high-end offensive players. The package of grit, skill, speed, leadership in Schenn is what the Rangers need. The Rangers don't need more immobile elephants.

You want to roll four lines that can out skate the opposition and keep coming. Couturier is often the last guy in the zone because his foot speed is awful and restrictive. He has good hands down low. But Schenn is a guy that gets in behind defenders. Beats them to pucks and can punish them physically. He wins board battles. And has the high end skill to come away with pucks and make plays.

Rangers don't need more defensive forwards. They need more offensive forwards.

I'll take Tatar + over Ferraro

Just going to have to agree to disagree. Tatar is a good player. I don't see him as what we need. To win you need to be strong down the middle.

Ferraro and Schenn are natural born leaders and have a winner's mentality. Speed to burn. Great motor. Physical. High-end skill. At the center position.

trade mdz to st louis for v-tank.

Tarasenko-Lindberg/Fast-Hagelin would be a great line

I doubt St. Louis wants to move Tarasenko. They don't really need MDZ either, they have an older, faster version in Leopold.

I would also love B. Schenn on the team. Something around Del Zotto, maybe a + going to Philly?

We could have had Datsyuk. We could have had Saad. We could have had Subban. We could have had Zetterberg. We could have Lidstrom. We could have had Parise. We could have had Getzlaf. We could have had Perry. We could have had Weber.

Need I go on?

Parise, Getzlaf, Eberle, Tarasenko were in the crosshairs though.

Not high on Couturier as an offensive player at all. Don't see much skill, and he skates in slow motion. Not a great shooter, not a great passer, he's fairly average in ever offensive skill there is. I see a 40 point shut down center in the mold of Martin Hanzal. If the Rangers are moving DZ, I'd rather see them get someone with a higher offensive upside.

I thought teams could only draft elite positional talent with a top 5 pick. :sarcasm:

Agreed, never been high on Couturier.

Let the Flyers drown in their own arrogance, they've been doing a good Rangers from 2000-2005 impression lately.

It's funny, I've never seen anyone go "We could have not had Hank, Staal, Callahan ..." and so on "if all the other teams made better picks"... ;)

Rangers need size on wingers that can play...id love Beleskey from the Ducks, would add some speed as well.. id love a Peckham tough rugged dman a mentor for McIlrath whenever he is ready. no point putting pressure on McIlrath as the lone tough dman.

Awful. Simply awful. All of it.

Ferraro hasn't been a large producer in the WHL, but to be fair, he did play for the Silvertips and Rebels, who were both bad teams. The reason I prefer Tatar is because I believe he is already a NHL player that is getting held back by Detroit's ripening prospect system. He was very good in his NHL stint this year and put up great advanced stats, but was still held back over grinders and scrubs like Eaves, Emmerton and Samuelsson.

I disagree about Schenn/Couturier. I don't see the Bergeron comparison. Bergeron is a great skater. Couturier is an average-at-best skater and IMO it will always stop him from being a #1. Couturier's foot speed is absolutely slow, but I still think he'll be a better overall player than Schenn. IMO, I much prefer a guy like Couturier's ability to work the boards and slow the game down to begin a puck possession game. I also think his defensive game is a notch above Schenn's, but Schenn is a more physical player. But it's really tough to score when your most common linemates are Talbot and Knuble. Right now, Couturier is already an elite defensive center, Schenn is simply an average 2C with a poor defensive game and good physical play. Couturier's production pedigree in Juniors to me suggest that he's just going through a transition process that early shutdown centers had in their career. Mike Richards and Ryan Kesler for example were heavily relied upon to play defensive hockey on their clubs early in their careers and both turned out to be elite PP players while still being held back with poor offensive zone starts and lining up against top competition at ES. Only few players like Datsyuk can put up high end production in that type of tough role at ES. I think he definitely has the skill to work the powerplay, not as its primary threat though.

Rangers don't need more defensive forwards. They need more offensive forwards.

The Rangers could use both. Their centers aside from Stepan and maybe Boyle aren't good defensively. And besides Stepan, they all resemble a weak puck possession game. Stepan-Couturier would be a formidable shutdown duo and fits in line with the personnel of this team, tough, gritty, defensive hockey.

Hanzal is very good player. I'd move MDZ any day of the week for a Hanzal type player.
