Was that partially because he showed no patience with a young player like Kreider?

Theres a plethora of young players he showed patience with over the past 4 years. Most of them excelled to the best of their ability.

What scared me most about Kreider the majority of last season is he didnt show any attributes that would warrant patience from the staff.

what blows my mind is how so many lobby for young players, rebuilding for 5 years to draft first overall plans, etc. yet kill Krieder, and consider him a non-NHL'er, and not part of the future?

He's the only player in the NHL to score 2 GWG in the postseason. He's one of the few reasons why we even made it out of the first round last year, and won a game against Boston this year...

If you can't tolerate his gaffes as he develops, why should anyone believe you'll have the patience for a full 5-year rebuild, with a team that will suck night after night after night?

you cant. and you wont. you're full of $***!

Let's assume there are question marks about Kreider, although from Sather comments, he sure sounds like he is part of the core going forward. But what about Hagelin, where do you see him?

I think hes a 3rd liner, in a perfect world.

Its funny, now Kreider all of a sudden isnt part of the future going forward, but last year almost NO ONE would move him for RICK NASH... comical stuff. Hate to tell you if Kreider isnt part of the core, we should have moved him along with Dubi and kept Anisimov (perfect 3c).

Fair enough.

I think the confusion in the first place was I was talking about the core right now. Maybe Kreider is part of it going forward, maybe hes a bust.

I'd consider the core right now to be:

Lundqvist
McDonagh
Stepan
Nash
Callahan
Girardi

Maybe Staal if he's healthy - maybe Brassard is he continues to play well.

Thats about it though.

why is Girardi part of the "core" going forward? because he's our only RHD? The "core" going forward IMO is Nash, Hank, Mcdonagh, and Stepan, ANYONE else can be available.

I saw some good things towards the end of the season offensively. To me, it looked like he was overthinking everything and not letting himself play. Not saying that is totally on the coaching staff, but with a kid like that, you have to let him play his game and work on his faults as you go. Especially on a team having such an issue scoring.

Thats just my opinion, not saying I wanted Torts gone for that reason. I can see it from the other side of the fence as well, just not how I would have handled it.

I think this upcoming season will be a telling one for Kreider. He will either show something, or they will trade him to a team willing to have more patience.

I can tolerate a rebuild, I just don't see much upside from Kreider based on his previous production pedigree in college, AHL and this NHL season.

I am talking about the core RIGHT NOW.

I dont know where this core "going forward" stuff even came from or, more importantly, how you can project if young players will develop enough to become part of it. The whole notion of insisting that Chris Kreider will be part of the core going forward is absurd. If he gets there, he gets there.

How much have you watched him besides the NHL?

Ranger fans are absolutely full of **** when they say they can tolerate a "rebuild".. I doubt ANYONE (stepan/mcdonagh included) want to go through a rebuild, and Hank would surely be gone. fans would be jumping off clips in mass unison if the Rangers went through a rebuid.

Do not like how the coaching staff, or even management, handled Kreider last season. If he wasn't good enough to be in the NHL, keep him in the AHL, don't yo-yo him in between leagues, and don't keep him in the NHL as a healthy scratch. At least play him in fourth line minutes consistently with the occasional bump up. Like in the playoffs, and look how that worked out.

If some people don't feel Krieder is part of the core, or at the very least the youth development plan, then they really have no business spouting nonsense about "not signing Lundqvist, rebuilding plans, etc.

seems like the bar for some is if they aren't first round/top three overalls they're busts.

Two goals no matter how clutch don't make a career.

Kreider was a hero for a day because of that OT winner, but now he still has to come to camp and prove he can play at a consistent level throughout an entire season. That's not a core player. Not yet.

I dislike the fact that he was up and down multiple times, and he was mishandled to a degree, he definitely shouldn't have been kept up to keep Torts' "Chateau bow-wow" warm.

:handclap:

totally.

I watched him play a bit at BC. All the scouting reports raved about his physical attributes.

As an NHL'er, I see a kid who has those physical tools, but lacks on the hockey IQ department. The game was simply moving too fast for him all season.

(cue the "so you think hes a bust" crap..)

I will say I really don't like how there seemed to be a disconnect between the coaching staff and the scouts/GM.

Everyone has to be on the same page in order for it to work.

Thats a legitimate gripe.

The whole situation is a microcosm of a Sather-run operation. Things getting done half-assed.

Kreider has all the physical skills needed to play the game at the NHL level, he just needs to play like he did those last 2 games against Boston every game/every shift and give consistent effort. The only thing imo holding him back is the lack of effort from shift to shift, inconsistency

But, stats!

Don't forget the Corsi.

Kreider has shown flashes, which is typical with a young player. Especially one put in an awkward situation by a coach. I agree with the fact that he didn't show enough to warrant more minutes under Torts based on how Torts ran the team though.

A new coach? Well he might loosen the grip a little and live through some of those deficiencies.

Funny, I think it was game 3 or 4 against Boston, probably four because it was his best game where he absolutely blew by everyone on the ice and I thought to myself it was the first time he used his speed like that all season.
