I didn't say I would do it, though I would trade Tyutin straight up for the 11th. And the Flyers like to spend lots of money, even with low marginal returns; they won't mind buying out Bryz and or Briere to fit in the players they need. I might also do the 19th and 20-something picks for the 11th.

The question isn't if you would do it, the question is if JK would do it. I would say almost no chance unless he needs the cap room for something else. Even with the two buyouts you start to get close to the cap again with the addition of Tyutin when you consider that they'll need a goal tender (maybe a starter) and they'll want someone to replace Briere.

I'd probably start looking elsewhere.

With the recent junior playoffs and Memorial Cup action, here's what I think will end up happening at the draft.

Seth Jones will still go #1

MacKinnon might have moved ahead of Drouin

Drouin might fall to #4 or #5

With nearly everyone in action, Sean Monahan might slide completely out of the top 10. He's someone that everyone likes, and some teams really like, but I don't know that anyone truly loves. If someone that they love is on the board, he'll fall.

The defenseman shuffle will continue. It could be only Jones in the top 10. I still think Edmonton will take Ristolainen if he's on the board at #7.

Domi and Horvat will both go in the top 10, barring a disastrous conclusion to the Memorial Cup.

There's going to be some excellent value for Columbus. I wouldn't be surprised to see a very high upside defenseman like Pulock available not only at #14, but wherever that second first-rounder slots in as well. Someone like Valentin Zykov may be there at the third one, or Mantha.

Regrettably, any more actual reports that I might have will have to wait until after the draft. There's a team that is paying for them, so between now and June 30, I won't be able to provide much detail on specific players.

Horvat is making a name for himself in these playoffs. Will it elevate his draft stock? My guess would be one or the other is gone before 14.

The nice thing is, that when guys like this rise up, guys who haven't been playing for the last few weeks (months?) drop ... so, it enhances the chance that a faller occurs - think Hunter Shinkaruk. I like where we sit ... let the cards fall to us, and see what shakes down. There are some damn fine players in that range (12-16ish).

The Flyers might be a good trading partner. Should we offer Nikitin plus 14 to move up to number 11? Not sure Savard would be enough. One of Horvat or Domi would be available at that spot.

I don't really see that much difference in the player we can get at 11 and 14 to make any trade. Now, I am not against doing one, but I just don't think we need to.

I agree, but if you ask Philly fans, they'll tell you they don't need more defencemen, they need better defencemen. That points to something like the 11th for Tyutin and the 19th. I'm not sure I would do it, but it would give us a much better shot at landing both Domi and Horvat.

There is no way I would do that.

here are Central Scouting's top 20 North American skaters plus the 4 top Europeans. I slotted the Europeans in the top 12 becasue that is where most mocks have them. The exact order isn't important here but rather who could be available if the top 12 are supplemented by Domi & Horvat.

1 SETH JONES
2 NATHAN MACKINNON
3 Alexander Barkov
4 JONATHAN DROUIN
5 DARNELL NURSE
6 Elias Lindholm
7 Valeri Nichuskin
8 SEAN MONAHAN Faller?
9 HUNTER SHINKARUK Faller?
10 VALENTIN ZYKOV Faller?
11 Rasmus Ristolainen
12 FREDERIK GAUTHIER Faller?
Max Domi
Bo Horvat
__________________________________________________
12 MIRCO MUELLER

14 SHEA THEODORE
15 RYAN PULOCK
16 ZACH NASTASIUK
17 CHRIS BIGRAS
18 BO HORVAT
19 RYAN HARTMAN
20 KERBY RYCHEL
21 WILLIAM CARRIER
22 MAX DOMI
23 CURTIS Lazar
Morgan Klimchuk he is ranked 25th NA
Adam Erne - he is ranked 26th NA

While some of their rankings seem a bit curious, they have been over the years the most accurate (I think)

So if Palinka's prediction of big moves by Domi& Horvat comes true and the rest holds true to form, we still have some nice players to pick from.

And I suppose we could add Wennberg to the list of availables.

MacKinnon is absolutely dominating this tournament. This situation reminds me so much of the 2009 draft. Tavares much like Mackinnon this year was someone that was talked about for so long everyone started trying to pick at every tiny thing they could. Then along came a big defensemen who was thought to be able to do it all, Hedman in 2009 and Jones this year. Obviously no team will be disappointed if they get Jones but MacKinnon just does it all and is going to be a superstar center which any team other then Pittsburg would obviously love. I always believe you should take the BPA and to me i just cant see how Jones is the better player.

Myles Bell

Myles Bell of the Kelowna Rockets was announced today as an invitee to the NHL's Central Scouting Combine. The reason I bring this up is because, Bell is a 6'1", 210 pounder who was converted to left wing from defense this year, and put up 38 goals, 93 points, and a +46 in 69 games. As a 19 year old, Bell will be eligible for the AHL next year.

This name may sound familiar to those of you who follow prospects fairly closely - Bell was a first round prospect on defense two years ago, however in the days leading up to the draft, was the driver in a DUI crash that killed his then girlfriend, a close family friend of his then-GM (of the Regina Pats). Very tragic incident, though it would seem that Bell has moved on from it and turned his life in the right direction.

As it stands, Bell's a bigger guy, physical, very hard to play against in all three zones, and competitive. He has a good, quick release with a heavy shot, makes smart decisions with the puck, and can play both forward or defense very well. This is a guy that we could get in the middle rounds, that could develop into a top-6 forward or a top-4 defenseman.

As someone who has watched both a TON, I still take Seth Jones at #1. MacKinnon is absolutely the best forward in the draft (hate to say, "I told you so," but I did ;)) ... but, Jones is an absolute beast.

Some of the virtually intriguing storylines out of this mock:

- Blue Jackets draft two key talented forwards from the Dub and a Swedish blueliner
- Leafs think they've landed a potential franchise player - many will beg to differ
- Habs hope they've landed a Ryan McDonagh clone
- Flames a potential franchise centreman, a dynamic puck-moving d-man and a speedy sniping winger
- Oilers with a mammoth blueliner with intriguing upside
- Avs: franchise blueliner or gamebreaking forward?
- Lightning: land a guy who could help Stamkos eclipse 70 goals
- Stars: land an Albertan kid who cheered for them growing up and idolized Mike Modano
- Devils with a "steal" at 9th
- Coyotes benefit from Russian factor
- Flyers think they've put Pronger and Timonen in a human blender with their selection...

Test yourself - how many of these prospects can you guess before clicking to confirm?

Good stuff... Fun read!

Interesting selections in there ... notably the player picked at #1. I have a hard time believing the Avalanche go for another center ahead of the big defenseman, but MacKinnon is definitely not a reach.

I know that. My point is I don't think the difference between those guys and the guys who will be there at 14 is that big (if there is a difference at all).

In the above draft, I'd take Horvat over Lazar & Zykov or Hartman over Hagg.

Agreed Espen. That is a terrible draft for us. No way do the Jackets pass up on Horvat, if he is there. Lazar would be great with the Rangers pick.

For anyone who cares, the HF Mod Mock Draft has reached the CBJ's second-round pick at 44 overall. Going totally on scouting reports and following a run on blueliners that included Muller, McCoshen, Theodore, Bigras, Bowey, and Hetherington, I opted for Swedish defenseman Linus Arnesson.

If you already know those names, you probably know better than I do. I went totally on what scouting reports I could find in a simple online search.

Agreed Espen. That is a terrible draft for us. No way do the Jackets pass up on Horvat, if he is there. Lazar would be great with the Rangers pick.

When I did that multi-part series on Howson on the main boards a couple months back, I went back and tried to micro-analyze the draft patterns of both Howson and MacLean. And in trying to determine the likelihood of continuity, I dug up a bunch of stuff on Ottawa and St. Louis from when Kekalainen was there.

Here's what I figured out. MacLean placed a massive premium on guys who finished their draft season hot. If someone was off the board entirely but had a big last 20 games of the season, he'd get a lot of extended looks. He also placed a huge premium on physical size, the only real exception being Kris Russell. (These are the only two tendencies I was able to derive on MacLean)

Howson and Kekalainen seem to be very similar, and look for similar attributes at the draft. But more important than that is that I didn't see any pattern of getting guys who finished hot. If Lazar was #10 on the team's board a month ago and Horvat was #25, I don't know that Horvat would move ahead of Lazar even with how he's played the last few weeks. Both Howson and Kekalainen were/are guys who seem to be much more oriented on the big picture, as opposed to Dougie's "what have you done for me lately" mentality.

So to tie it all up, I think there is the chance that Lazar would be picked over Horvat. More likely is that, if someone one or two picks back really liked Horvat, a trade would be made to move back and still get the guy they wanted.

Things are getting more interesting with Nichushkin He's willing to play in North American next season, reports are the Dynamo is terminating his contract which seems very strange after they spent $10 Million dollars essentially buying him from Traktor.

http://en.rsport.ru/hockey/20130522/663592291.html (in English)

“We agreed that they would let me go, but if something across the ocean goes wrong I will immediately go back to them (Dynamo),†he said.

The Combine is next week, so that's certainly going to make teams less concerned about him being unwilling to come over. However, the problem is he's likely not ready for the NHL. Will he be willing to play in the AHL or CHL for very little when he could be making millions in the KHL?

He's already flip-flopped quite a bit saying a few weeks ago he would honor his KHL contract, now he says he wants to leave. NHL teams will have a lot to talk to him about at the Combine.

Sure sounds like me may be interested in moving up, here is quaote from jarmo...“Where we’re picking right now (it could change), it’s really hard to say. In my experience, after about the five or six top players the draft scatters all over the place. We might think we have an idea about who’s going to be there at No. 14, but it may end up being completely different by the time we’re up there. We might move up if we see an opportunity to get a player we like…it’s hard to say, but there are always impact players in the draft and it’s the same case this year. From what I’ve seen, there are some very good players in this draft sooner rather than later in the NHL. We’re going to keep our fingers crossed and do our best to make different moves to get one, two or maybe three of those players.â€

He mentions moving up quite a bit in this interview...

Not saying we should or shouldn't, but if Jarmo does deem Johansen a problem. How far could we move up and would it be worth it to attach one of our three firsts with him.

Also not saying we should or shouldn't, but I'd guess Johansen plus the 14th gets us somewhere in the 5-7 range.

If I was the Canes, I would want to win now while the Staal's are in their primes, and I'd look to trade the 5th pick for Johansen and Tyutin. The Oilers are another team that might do that, in their case being sick of draft picks and wanting to trade for defence and certainty.

I probably wouldn't do Johansen and Tyutin for the 7th, but I probably would for the 5th, just because Lindholm has sky-high upside. You don't know if he'll even be better than Johansen alone, but he has a chance to be much much better, and I'd trade for that.

BTW, none of this should be read as giving up on Johansen. I'm still operating on the assumption that he'll be a player of decent character, probably a good all-around second line center.

I do Johansen and the #14 pick ... only if it gets us into the top-4. Why? Because Ryan Johansen has already shown that he can play in the NHL, and has already carved a niche for himself as a potential shutdown center. The guys at the draft have nothing like that, only potential. For me, to trade a young (under-21) NHL player - particularly one that you drafted 4th overall - and a middle-first round draft pick, the return had better be humongous. I'd settle for one of Jones, MacKinnon, Drouin, or Barkov ... Lindholm is a stretch. Maybe with the 19th or 22nd pick in the 14th pick's place.
