The devils had some major breakdowns that resulted in unstoppable goals. The shots number is kinda misleading bc there were a lot of quality shots given up. Dot get me wrong i think Schneider will vastly improve out team, but I don't think he has a .930 sv pct if we play like last year.

As a positive towards the whole Kovalchuk situation, given NJ does not pick up another superstar (which they probably won't), you could say it's good now that there is no one player to focus upon to halt our progress in a game. If the scoring is divided up amongst all lines, and produce at a good rate, you could almost say it creates a better situation then before.

Don't get me wrong, losing Kovalchuk is huge. But if the cards we have been handed can be played properly, especially with Schneider now, then the team could prove to be better off.

Only time will tell, I guess.

Second fewest goals in the league last season and we LOST Kovalchuk and Clarkson. Talk about being screwed. This is a verifiable lottery team, no doubt.

I'm pretty sure I've heard this song before.

I hope Lou doesn't over pay as he usually does when he loses someone.

Just saying. In the past 2 seasons, Ryder has scored more goals then Kovy

Brunner and Clowe combined can score more then Clarkson has

Yet you fail to mention we gained Ryder, Clowe, Brunner(most likely) and Schneider. I guess you can be a ***** and have that **** attitude, not my style tho.

But do you think they are better offensive players (creating offense)? Maybe a healthy Clowe vs. Clarkson. But none of those two were in Kovy's tier, even a diminished Kovy.

And just saying Clowe Brunner and Ryder can replace and even give us more goals then Clarkson and Kovy and Schneider will save us some goals that we need

Does that matter ??? They scored. Thats all we need, scoring. We dont need anything else

I'm just telling you what I see. I'm not letting my heart interfere with the analysis. This team's only hope are some of the AHL projects. If they take large steps, then yes this team could surprise, but the Devils are usually extremely conservative when dealing with their younger players, so I'm doubtful.

Plus to anyone arguing that Brunner would get in the way of us getting someone next year. If he signs for 3.5 , we still have 17 million next year. (Not counting if Volch is bought-out / traded)

All we need to re-sign is Fayne/Larsson/Marty (If he wants back)

We can still make a run for a top FA

I don't know if you didn't notice or something, but we've made major upgrades despite losing 2 players.

An upgrade in goal, but even the goaltending last year wasn't overly bad aside from the Hedberg slide. The other moves were auxiliary when examining what we lost. You also should be reminded that our best offensive player is past his prime. Certainly a good player but he's only going to diminish further at his age. Elias won't be improving.

The team isn't ever better off without Kovalchuk. It's more or less how they respond with what they have.

We lost Clarkson, Kovy, and Poni on offense. Clowe is clearly and upgrade for Clarkson. Poni was useless. And Ryder & Brunner at least make up for the offense lost by Kovy.

The upgrade in goal is enormous by itself.

I'm happier with this team. Fine. Elias is getting older, but he's also one of the most consistent players on the roster. As a whole, it's a more balanced and deep team than last year by far, even if it doesn't have the sex appeal Kovy brought.

goaltending was horrendous last year lol nice try

So horrible. 13th in the league (out of 30 teams) in Goals Against. Last I checked, we have major problems turning on that light in the booth behind the net. When you outscore the bottom feeders in Florida and Nashville by 1 goal you have some issues. And that team had Kovalchuk and Clarkson. Certainly Ryder can help, but more goals left Jersey as opposed to being signed here.
