Do you think that Larsson will be able to play on the PP this year ?? He has been great in the AHL so far this season...

He is able to, the question is whether our new PP coach will use him there.

What strikes me as bizarre is Lou is willing to let the forwards go into the season potentially massively shorthanded on the off-chance that a couple not exactly blue-chip prospects can hack it in top-6 roles, but he goes and ensures that his defense has an extraordinary excess of veteran talent which would prevent any young defensemen from having a shot at the lineup.

At this point, it's not even a sure thing that Adam Larsson has an everyday roster spot.

Which is clearly not going to happen. Lou's comments and Larsson's development both demand that he has a spot. I smell a trade coming. A defenceman, maybe even two defencemen for a forward. Hopefully an impact player, but at least some quality forward.

I wouldn't try educating those fools on the main board dude. We've tried that already, and nobody listens. You point out Jordan Staal's deal, and how the cap hit would have been higher had he only signed for 8 years, and they tell you ''He was only a third liner in Pittsburgh!'' or they start picking on Marty, and our no name D at random.

The conspiracy theorist in me thinks that Lou is still bent on this team being a defensive minded team even though Deboer has changed that. And that's why he's going with all these guys, but they won't help us if we can't score.

The realist in me says a trade will be made eventually. Maybe it will take 10 games into the season, but eventually. I just hope we aren't scoring plenty early, and then fade out later on after some potential guys that would interest us have been traded out.

Ya I don't presume to guess what Lou is planning to do between now and the trade deadline. Very peculiar indeed

I'm still convinced Lou has no intention of going into the season with 8 defensemen and would be surprised if someone isn't moved by Saturday.

It also doesn't make sense to have some of our higher paid guys sitting upstairs as healthy scratches. Or maybe they are assuming no one will be healthy at the same point during the season?

Larsson in the AHL would be as stupid as Tedenby or Butler in the AHL, while Janssen takes up a spot in the NHL.

Considering that half the fanbase was convinced that Travis already had his bags packed.... I'm not too worried about any silence on Lou's end above the upcoming roster.

He's made a few crazy moves, sure, but he's always looking for a way to ice the best roster possible.

Sometimes he signs Rolston to a ridiculous contract, sometimes he picks gems like Poni and Carter out of the bargain bin.

LOL Rolston!

What if we traded away a defensemen for some picks, and signed Brian?!:sarcasm:

Seriously Lou, and the Devils, and Travis did a good job without this leaking. Maybe something else is in the works as we speak that won't be leaked?

The forward lineup does look a little scarce right now, but i don't think it's time to panic just yet, nor do i expect any immediate moves to be made (although i do expect we will see a defence for forward trade relatively soon).

Looking at the forward corps right now, i wonder whether the mentality is to see what we have in our fringe forwards before making any additions. We have three great producers in our top six with Kovalchuk (our superstar PPG player), Zajac and Elias. Throw Zubrus (a very solid role player) and Henrique (hopefully he can build on or at least match his rookie performance) into the mix and suddenly that's not a half bad group of players. Clarkson fits better on the 3rd line than the 2nd, but he can move up in a pinch if necessary, so when Henrique gets healthy i don't think we're as bad off as some people here seem to think.

I think that waiting until after the first 5-10 games or so before making any significant moves might be smart, it will allow us to assess the performance of our fringe forwards such as Tedenby, Butler, Darche and Josefson and make adjustments as necessary if they underperform.

Carrying 8 NHL worthy D does suggest we will see someone moved out (hopefully not Tallinder, i'd like to keep him around as a mentor to Larsson, plus i rate him highly), but right now i'm quite happy with our team on paper. Sure another 2nd line forward would be great to bump Clarkson down, but we have a very solid team overall still even after losing Parise.

Does anyone think the fact Tallinder was on the Albany team mean he might be the odd man out? Or was he probably just put there so they'd have another NHL defenseman on their team?

I don't think that move was an indication of anything. Tallinder very well may be the odd man out when all is said and done, but I think this move was so Larsson had an NHL defenseman next to him, and one he probably has some rapport with on top of it. I doubt it was any more than that in this specific case. I can't recall off the top of my head, but who has Larsson been paired with all week for practices? Was it Tallinder or someone else?

wut

Posted it in the Gomez thread as well... but there's another familiar name surprisingly on our roster

Where did you hear that? I haven't heard anything regarding captains since Rich Chere jumped the gun a few days ago with Salvador.
NOTES: Lamoriello said that C Adam Henrique has been cleared to resume skating. He had surgery roughly six weeks ago to repair a ligament in his left thumb. It will still be a couple of weeks before he starts shooting the puck. ... DeBoer plans to name the Devils' new captain before Saturday's opener at the Islanders. Kovalchuk refused to campaign for it, saying he's been a captain before.
