id rather trade with the islanders who are close to being a playoff team so a package of BERNIER AND MARTINEZ could net us STROME+1ST

Yep. And I hope DL deals up into the last 1/3rd of the 1st round if he's still on the board at that point.
We'd be lucky to get Strome, nevermind a 1st which is likely top 15, for that package.
you can always add but my thinking is quincey went for a 1st, varlamov went for a 1st so bernier and martinez are better right???
what makes strome worth more than bernier and martinez
the islanders can realistically be a playoff team with good goaltending and a better D, and both are players that can help tavares and the rest grow.

dipietro aside they need young building blocks that contract was just bad.but there they are fighting for a playoff spot.
nilsson is the better of the two and i'll say bernier is better still, out here in SB all my swedish buds keep tabs on their hockey so ive seen nilsson quite a bit and he's big and that his biggest attribute.

Well the fact Strome was a top 5 pick and arguably the best prospect outside the pro ranks right now has an impact. As does the fact there's zero support to suggest the Isles are even looking to add a goalie or a D-man.
Additionally, your trade math is flawed. Just because a rental cost a 1st does not mean a none rental is worth at least as much. It doesn't simply translate over. In some cases, teams actually DON'T want a contract that goes past that season. As well, just because one team would pay a 1st for Quincey, doesn't mean that sets the bar on all trades that are similar, as not all teams are going to pay that for that type of player. Paul Guastad somehow netted a 1st as well, that doesn't mean we can now trade Trevor Lewis for a 1st.
Same with bernier. Varlamnov btw also had 19 playoff games under his belt when traded, and was coming off a season in which he posted a .924 save percentage. His performance to that point in his career was superior to Bernier's.
Bernier and Martinez together gets you a mid-round 1st and a depth player/3rd round pick, give or take. It doesn't net you someone like Strome, Couturier, etc.
If NYI put Strome on the market, they could get a lot

IMO, we are going to have a missing gap in our prospect if we keep going this way. Our NHL club is pretty stacked and our AHL team is full with a bunch of guys with not much future of making the team. We then added guys like Pearson last year that jump straight to AHL and created even more log jam
So IMO, draft whoever is the best player but the team need to be careful about spacing out the age of the prospects

My bad. But anyways he does have again a very early birthday. Guess he missed the cutoff date for 2011 draft by 2 days. And he made the jump to AHL, before all the KHL things, which again crowded our minor
Basically my point is, draft guys that we can stick in junior for a few years

With Loktionov gone for pretty much peanuts, Holloway and Moller gone, and Toffoli already with the Kings, we're in serious need of skilled/scoring forwards.
Pearson is pretty much the only one I see in our cupboard that might have a future with the Kings. I'm not yet sold on Vey or Kitsyn, and I dont see anyone else that has top6 potential in the future. I'm all for using our picks for boom/busts this year, especially since we lack a 1st rounder.
A big defensive D, in the mold of a Greene/Teubert also needed.
I have no desire to draft a goalie this year and I dont see why we would. Quick is here for 10 years. Bernier does NOT need to be traded; we can sign him for another 1-2 years then move him if needed. Vet backups are always cheap to acquire. Plus, I think one of Jones/Berube/Martin could still develop into a future backup for us.

Bernier will need to be traded very soon. He's an RFA this off-season, and has already asked for a trade and wants to be an NHL starter. Meaning likely one of three things:
A. Bernier goes to RFA and gets a RFA offer, which forces a trade or that we take the compensation.
B. Bernier signs with us and likely demands to much for the backup position, forcing us to trade him to make the cap work. And we are very cap tight next year. Not to mention it runs the risk of a Luongo/Schnieder situation, which is a sideshow to the team.
C. Bernier refuses to sign and holds out for a trade.
Bernier wants out, that's clear, and his contract is up, meaning he has a lot of power to force his way out if he wants.
With Jones, he's getting in Jeff Zatkoff territory; we'll need to decide what we are going to do with him in the next 12 months. Almost guaranteed he'll be out of the developmental system by this time next season, either up with us as a backup or being ready to the be let go as a RFA/UFA.
So in the minors we will have Berube likely in Manchester and Gibson likely in the ECHL. The way DL has set things up in the past, this is exactly when he'd draft (or sign in the case of Jones) a goalie to sit in the CHL for a few years, then be ready to step into the pro ranks when another goalie graduates.
If you look at the drafting history under the current drafting team (Futa, et al.) the Kings grabbed Linden Rowatt in 2007, Berube in 2009, Gibson in 2011. So every second year. The next year if that pattern holds is 2013.
I fully expect us to grab a goalie in rounds four or five.

Considering it takes 3-4 years typically for anyone drafted in rounds 2 - 7 to become permanent NHLers (and likely longer the way we tyically develop players), we'll likely need almost everything potentially. The only one I'd consider guaranteeing being here that long is Doughty, regardless of who is still under contract that far ahead.

I'm confused why we traded Loktionov for so little, couldn't he have been included in a nice package at the deadline or draft (Bernier + Loktionov + 2nd) instead of a pretty useless pick. It was like DL was sending New Jersey consolation prize or something.

He didn't have much value at the time. He was a risky pick up, as there was the real possibility he'd head back to Europe if he didn't make it with NJ. He has thus far clicked, so he's looking like a good pick up, but no one knew that at the time of the deal. The best we likely could have got IMO was a 4th, so a 5th seems about right.
He was demanding a trade, has a contract expiring at the end of the year, and was threatening if he wasn't playing with a NHL team by the end of the year that he was going back to Russia. Not a lot of value there.
