2013 Free Agency & Offseason Thread II

No thanks to Raymond, too small and not tough enough. I'd still rather have Morrow, who at least plays with an edge, ya know. Some of these deals really are ****ing ridiculous. With that log jam we have at D, I'm wondering if DL is trying to swing some kind of trade for a forward.

Morrow over Penner? I want Penner gone...but rather have him back over Morrow. Not hard to score in Pittsburgh. And at least Penner has shown to be useful in our system come playoff time.

Brendan Morrow is listed as a LW in many sources online. I would take him over Penner. 6 goals in 15 games last year in Pittsburgh. Penner only scored 5 more....in 3 years as a King.

Morrow played with a split kneecap during the playoffs. He is a warrior but I just don't know if I would bring him in. Maybe a 1-year deal for 1.5-2 million?

But but.. I thought Iginla was going to the Stars? Lets stop using Tonellisghost as some rumor guy, please. It's obvious he's hardly ever right.

What how do you expect Toffoli to play second line with Carter at right wing.

Unless Carter switches wing which I think we can, then Toffoli can take rw

I just don't know who else would fit on that line but Toffoli. King? Clifford? I'd rather see someone with some offense there.

Morrow played with a split kneecap in the playoffs according to TSN which hindered his performance. I'd take him over Penner all day long but he'll be too expensive

Keep reaching for the stars.

I don't understand what this means?

We got worse today without filling any previous holes. What's wrong with just calling it like it is? Blame it on the cap or whatever else, but the fact remains we're a worse hockey team on paper right now than we were in game five of the WCF.

I really think one of our RW's is on the move to let Toffoli step up. No way Clifford is a healthy scratch. King has only been scratched 1-2 times under Sutter and Nolan played 44 games last year. So none of these guys are really spares except Fraser. Lewis is a Sutter favorite so something has to give at forward.

Scuderi left on his own volition. He opted to move closer to home. What free agent options do you see that could replace Scuderi? Gaining a healthy Mitchell back would be like adding a new player to the roster considering the fact that we didn't see Mitchell at all this past season. Lombardi's decision to retain Regehr is looking like a smart one considering what free agents are getting on day one and what little options are available in terms of rugged, stay-at-home defensemen.

You are just cranky that the Kings aren't appearing active on the free agent front just to keep you entertained.

Yeesh, everyone is crotchety today.

How today could have gone -

We don't make moves - Dean never does anything!
We do make moves - JFC that is overpayment. Way to go Dean, thanks for giving that scrub double his worth!

Hello Ladies and Gents, first time poster here but long time stalker of the boards. Felt like it was time to get in on the great discussions here.

It sucks to see Scuds go but wish him luck in Pitt ( he's going to need it ) I see some people are not too keen on the Schultz signing but I like it do to the fact he's a serviceable defenseman. This will also keep Ellerby, Martinez and Muzzin honest. It's basically Dean saying don't think for a minute you have a guaranteed spot on this roster now that Scuds is gone, you need to come into camp better than ever and earn/keep that spot. I believe Willie will be back and the defensive group will be ok.

And of course ... GO KINGS GO :yo:

Welcome to boards!

What were the Kings supposed to do, create cap space out of thin air? The most expendable guy we had to create cap space with just had a seizure. You guys wanted a core and you got one, so don't go complaining about this now. The core and prospects the Kings have developed (also what everyone wanted) to become part of that core took up our room.

And no, we're not a worse hockey team on paper. Dean says that Willie Mitchell is healthy. Any Willie Mitchell that we've ever had is better than any Rob Scuderi we've ever had. Furthermore, we traded an excess piece for a forward who can score at a better rate than any of our other bottom six guys. Then, further to that point, we have a young winger in Toffoli who has been getting better at a rapid pace. Matt Greene will also be in game shape once things start this time around.

So no, it's not worse by any stretch, and it is still the best team in the division. Point blank period.

Some people should really, really know what they're talking about before they talk. Iginla WAS basically going to Dallas. Did you hear what Aaron Ward said today? All of those insider guys knew it too. He said it on air. But things changed. They got Seguin. That obviously changed the direction they went with their team. Tonelli was not wrong in the least.

You can look at that way, but that's just not the case. Just how many lw and shutdown defensemen on the cheap are available? We all knew losing Scuds was a real possibility, and he's gone. There was nobody of his quality for under 3 million, and as for LW, this is only day one of free agency. Deals still can be made. This is still a damn good team, the sky isn't falling.

Why would I be crotchety? I don't understand. I have felt like this for awhile and it seemed like the right time to say something. I just thought it was hilarious. I agree with most of his posts. I just think he takes the rumors he spews a little too far.

I think what he's getting at is all the teams that have even less cap space than us are still making big moves and improving their team today and will figure the cap out later. We NEED a second line LW to play with Carter and Richards if we want to compete with Chicago, Detroit, and dare I say Dallas this year. There's still Jagr and Morrow out there I guess and I'm sure Dean is trying to get someone but losing Scuderi, Penner, and Richardson and only gaining Schultz is not the best team in the division, and we are definitely worse than we were in the playoffs. If you can;t see that you're just being a homer

EDIT: Forget about Detroit. Still getting used to them being in the East

We have 5.2m today. We have enough RFA's that we have 1.7m left in the end (and that's if none of them ask for more than their QO). The only teams with less cap space than us right now have nobody left to sign. We have a whole line worth of players to sign and two defensemen. There's not another team left in the NHL who has this many players left to sign and are this low on their cap space.

I am surprised they approved the Iggy deal. So much of the contract was in bonuses just to push the cap hit back a year. Having a GM that doesnt cheat is no fun

Money. Talks.

I don't even know if it was JUST the money that did it. Boston lost a pretty promising young player who had questionable attitude problems that may or may not be true (think Richards and Carter) but in that deal they gained a HELL of a winger. They still have all the other key pieces really that they need to go deep again next year. Iginla deserves a ring more so than a lot of people in this league. If I was playing a word association game with NHL players and the word is class, Iginla is the first in my mind. So you get money and a really good chance at a cup. Gotta be sweet for Iggy and I hope we see them in the finals. :)
