2013 Free Agency & Offseason Thread II

From
Richard Cloutier

Rumors everywhere this morning that Kings forward Kyle Clifford is being dealt to the Oilers. I read one site that suggests the return could be prospects Tyler Pitlick + Mitchell Moroz.

That wouldn't be a horrible return. At first glance I like it, though admittedly I am not all that familiar with either prospect.

I didn't know about them either and read the same 2 reports (above) that you did.
However, Cloutier's column this afternoon, he mentions the rumor and had this to say:

The deal has yet to be officially announced, and some are suggesting Kings people are the ones spreading the rumor in hopes that teams will hear it and offer greater counter-offers. Quite possible this is the case.

As much as the Kings are considering cap issues right now and Clifford could be moved because of them, I don't see Pitlick + Moroz as an appropriate return. Both prospects had disastrous seasons in 2012/2013, and neither have an certain NHL career ahead of them. Clifford is an immediate NHL player who would be a great addition to the Oilers 3rd line.

Perhaps, and this is just speculation on my part, the Kings would want a more certain prospect in return like an Anton Lander?

From that same hockey's future site on Lander

Talent Analysis
A very smart two-way player with excellent hockey sense. Lander reads the game well and makes mature decisions with and without the puck. Plays with some intensity, but his skating needs some improvement. Is a capable playmaker that protects the puck very well and usually comes out with the puck from the corners and along the boards. Defensively aware and with leadership skills.

Future
Lander is a quintessential third line center--he excels at the finer points of the game, has an inherent defensive ability rarely seen in younger players, and has been a natural leader at every level. Expect him to be a fixture on the Oilers third line and in their penalty killing rotation in the not-too-distant future, and don't be surprised if he's wearing a letter sooner than later either.

i agree take the picks. not to mention i think Deano is up against the limit of 50 players on contract. they like to operate around 47 or so iirc. relief on the cap front and contract situation as well

No, the Kings are at 42 players on the reserve list so that's not an issue at all. Technically the team is at 43, but Kurtis MacDermid doesn't count unless he makes the NHL team since he's an under 20 player.

Trading Clifford for futures is about the only option unless we are talking about a bigger package deal.

It just sucks it's the only option. I would much rather do a bigger deal though Clifford + Martinez I think would fetch a nice return.

Some twitter chatter of a rumour of a done deal between the Kings and Oilers of Kyle Clifford for Pitlick/Moroz

It's here.

If I remember, this Richard Cloutier guy was as bad of a source as Dan Cloutier was a goalie, especially during Frasergate

I love this part
The deal has yet to be officially announced, and some are suggesting Kings people are the ones spreading the rumor in hopes that teams will hear it and offer greater counter-offers. Quite possible this is the case.

Rumors don't come out of the kings org. We maybe hear about things 30 seconds before they happen but never a rumor it is going to happen. See Richards (rumors out of Philly), Carter (CBJ writer Aaron Portzline broke it), Williams ( a random blogger found out and Dean had to lie about it)....

Oiler fan here.

Cloutier is not a reliable source at all. Not sure Moroz/Pitlick is much of a return for you guys though. Neither player is that great.

Lander would be a much better idea, or go for draft picks perhaps. Doubt either of the other guys crack the NHL in their career.

If we trade Clifford for these 2 no-names I'll be pissed. If it comes down to it, rather have picks or something or package Muzzin/Martinez for something better.

Do you agree that Richard Cloutier is the Dan Cloutier of reporters?

Listen, the guy writes "I read one site that suggests the return could be prospects Tyler Pitlick + Mitchell Moroz."

Does that sound like he's getting some inside information? He read it on a god damn website :)

Here, the Kings are gonna get Taylor Hall for Clifford and a 3rd rounder, tell your friends you read it on a website because you just did :)

Haha, yeah.

Do you agree that Richard Cloutier is the Dan Cloutier of reporters?

Nope. Dan Cloutier made it to the NHL for a number of years. Richard Cloutier is a blogger in a basement a few hours outside of Edmonton. Dan failed at the highest level. Richard fails at the lowest one.

Put no weight behind any of his "rumours"
