2013 Free Agency & Offseason Thread II

The Kings have a little over $2M in cap space left and have three RFAs to re-sign with Trevor Lewis, Kyle Clifford, and Jordan Nolan still without contracts.

Assuming the Kings re-sign all three forwards, and with the newest additions to the roster, the Kings roster stands at 25 players (14 forwards, 9 defensemen, 2 goalies).

The Kings will have to trim the roster by 3 players eventually, and most of the competition appears to be at left wing, openings on the bottom six, and for the 7th defense slot.

I view the signing of Carcillo as an upgrade over Brad Richardson, in the sense that the Kings got themselves an even bigger pest who can get under the opponents skin. Toffoli or Frattin will be replacing Penner as the #2 LW, and a combination of Clifford, King, Nolan, Carcillo, Fraser, and one of Toffoli or Frattin will be competing for bottom six positions, with the guaranteed locks being Stoll and Lewis. So that leaves six players battling for four positions in the bottom six.

Schultz and Ellerby will be competing against each other to see who will be the next designated Davis Drewiske, and Martinez will be competing with Muzzin to see which left handed defenseman pins down the left side on the third defensive pairing.

Competition is healthy.

Nailed it. Great post. Except we won't have to trim it by 3 unless a prospect makes the team and I'm not sure we see any make the team this year.

After subtracting Clifford, Martinez, and Ellerby and adding Bourque, you're left with $779,000 in cap space for Lewis, Nolan, and any injury call-ups you need during the season.

Yikes! You're right. I thought we had more cap space than that. It's still doable, but it does look like we may have to move an additional roster player that's making something close to 3M.

The Kings likely won't give full time roster spots to any of the kids unless they absolutely play lights out hockey and blow them away with their play during camp and pre-season. I don't think they'd hold back any NHL ready talent.

But until that happens, I don't think Andreoff, Pearson, or Vey make the team yet. Maybe as the season progresses, bodies will be moved to make room, but more than likely I think we'll see a combination of two (maybe three) of those players next season. I don't view Nolan's spot as being a guaranteed one, and Fraser can be supplanted. Fraser as well as Carcillo will be UFAs as well, so they buy some time until some of the kids are ready.

I also like the idea of Andreoff serving a bigger role in Manchester next season, as it seems like his responsibilities and minutes grew as the season progressed, and his play got better as a result.

This is exactly what I've been saying. If any of those 3 force our hand, that's great for us but I don't see any of them doing so this year. They certainly will be the first three call ups out of the forward group. It wouldn't surprise me to see Fraser let go after this year and Carcillo will all depend on how he plays and what the makeup of our team looks like next offseason.

According to the 4th period, Kings are actively shopping Clifford now, but this is the 4th period so...

I believe it, he does seem like the odd man out now, especially with Nolan being cheaper. Its a shame, I was hoping he'd fill the void Simmonds left, but he never really progressed like I hope he would. Guess its up to Matt Frattin to fill that Wayne-hole now. And hopefully Nolan can return to form from our cup run...

I feel 100x better after reading this. Thanks Ziggy.

Nolan won't play on this team as long as Sutter's the coach.

Nolan was a stud in the Cup run with his forechecking and hitting. He had that huge goal vs St Louis and that great fight with Stewart. He played so well that Clifford never got back in the line-up after her recovered from the Bitz hit in the 1st round.

Clifford is my favorite King but the writing is on the wall. Andreoff is the younger version and not younger by much. Nolan plays RW so the competition is really between Carcillo, Clifford and Andreoff. If the Kings deal Clifford, next year Carcillo and Fraser are Ufa's allowing Andreoff to slot in.

League source tells TFP Kings Kyle Clifford will be shipped out of LA but Habs are NOT in mix in prospective deal "No chance to MTL"

Not sure why the Cliffy thread had to be merged with this one, maybe I will make a player discussion thread on Cliffy, but then maybe that gets merged also...not sure how to proceed...I am lost...lost in HFBoards policy...

Meanwhile, I don't think much of "The Fourth Period" but you never know when they may get it right, so...

Odd moves, Schultz and Carcillo. I'd be pretty disappointed if Clifford is moved due to cap reasons (especially if it isn't an upgrade) yet we can afford to pick up these two guys. Nothing against either of them.

We can still afford all 3 RFA forwards. A 22 man roster (11F, 9D, 2G) gives up 2.278 million in cap space. If we get rid of one of Ellerby/Schultz, it's around 3 million for 3 bottom 6 forwards, which is enough space for all 3, and puts us over the roster limit. Cap will not be the issue here

Thanks Ron,

Then damn who are the kings talking to?

We would have a bit more money if DL didn't stupidly sign Schultz, who will be sitting in the press box making 700K. Now we have Martinez making 1.1 million to sit in the box, Muzzin making 1 million as the #6 guy and Ellerby joing Martinez in the press box for another 735K.

Schultz - 700K
Ellerby - 735K
Martinez - 1.1 million
Muzzin - 1 million

All 4 of those guys are battling for one spot! All DL needed to do was re-sign Martinez and he was fine...but no, he had to throw about 1.4 million in Schultz and Ellerby.

Most teams carry 7D. If injuries occurred we could recall from Manchester or sign the 40 UFA D-men still out there.

If true, it stinks to see Clifford go, but he is kind of buried here on the fourth line. I'd rather deal King over him, but I am sure Lombardi has his reasons, though if I had to guess it would be because King is very responsible defensively, and Clifford has been prone to make mistakes in his own end. Carcillo is the perfect fourth line left wing addition, and Nolan is an ideal, cheap, spare forward. Clifford is lost in the crowd a bit. Hopefully we get a good return. I certainly won't miss Clifford's fighting technique. Every time he fought, I thought he was going to die out there, just suicidal.

Carcillo is LW. King and Clifford are LW's. Nolan is a RW. So, right now, Nolan looks to be staying. He is probably asking for less money than Clifford anyways.

Brown-Kopitar-Williams
Frattin-Richards-Carter
King-Stoll-Toffoli
Carcillo-Lewis-Nolan
Extra: Fraser

Or you know, DL actually used logic and knows Willie Mitchell isn't a slam dunk to return, and any setback could be long term. Not to mention Greene and Martinez not having the healthiest seasons.

Keeping 8+ NHL playing D is actually a good idea with the injuries we've had.

We have 9 D now. It is a little extreme. Greene should be fine. Mitchell seems fine. Why carry Martinez, Ellerby and Schultz on the sidelines.

It's July. Nobody's on the sidelines at the moment.

Nobody even has to be traded yet. 1) The Kings aren't over the cap. B) Even if they were, they can be until the end of September of whatever. All the worrying about 9 defensemen or extra forwards just doesn't have to be dealt with for another 2+ months.

Now I'm sure Lombardi would rather not leave himself in a position where he's over the cap and having to get rid of someone, which would give the other team leverage, and maybe cost the Kings something extra to get rid of a contract. However, there are 2 months before anything gets going again, and Lombardi has more information than any of us. I'm sure there is a reason why he signed Ellerby and Schultz, along with Martinez and Muzzin, and got Carcillo in a trade.

Lombardi knows he's not working with a lot of cap space. It's not like he signed Schultz a day after re-signing Ellerby and then all of a sudden an hour later it dawned on him that every dollar counts this year. The Kings aren't playing tonight, they're not playing next week, or even next month. Let it play out. See where it goes. Nobody is a healthy scratch yet.

Ummm...no. The Kings have Lewis, Nolan and Clifford to sign and only 2.2 million to spend. Take away Ellerby and Schultz and we have about 4 million to spend.

Key words are 'should be' and 'seems'. You can't base a roster on the best case scenario. Plan for the worst, and that is a couple of injured D

Take 1 away and it's about 3 million, which is enough for all 3 forwards and gives us 24 players. If it took more than 3 to sign them they were asking for too much.

No what? Lombardi doesn't know he's working with limited cap space? He's just signing guys willy nilly? He doesn't know how much Ellerby and Schultz signed for? He doesn't know who the RFA's are?

The Kings can go over the cap to sign the last couple guys until they decide who will be on the roster. Not sure if that's a DL type move, though.
