The PP in the first period last night with Fasth as the righty shot showed some creativity than the Rangers PP at any point last season. Tortorella was a PP genius with Hawerchuk, LaFontaine and Mogilny. Not so much without the Hall of Fame players.

We saw a lot more of players waiting for the screen to take a shot. Brassard, Zuccarello, Fast, Lindberg look right at home on the power play. McDonagh and Girardi not so much. Shouldn't be wasting Girardi's minutes on the power play.

Rangers had something like 24 PP goals in 48 games last year. Has to be better this year. So does the PK for that matter, and Moore should help with that.

You're really jumping the gun here. Theres a fine line between names of prospects and NHL depth.

You've already deemed Fast and Lindberg to be NHL ready, but just victims of a numbers game? Extremely premature.

I don't think that's what I said at all. On the other hand, I'd be shocked if neither Fast nor Lindberg are on the opening night roster because of the injuries to Callahan and Hagelin.

While I agree that Ferriero brings more than Mashinter, I'd stop short of labeling Ferriero as an "excellent" fourth line player. He's serviceable down there. And he's no real loss.

He brings a very important aspect to a 4th line, he can skate the puck up the ice. Dan Paille has this role on Boston's 4th line and it is very underrated.

Dorsett is a good skater, but he isn't as good with the puck as Ferriero.

Does anyone remember what happened with him last year BTW? We picked him up, he really stood out and was suddenly benched and sent down for no apparent reason.

He only got 35 minutes 5v5, but boy did the Rangers dominate those 35 minutes. :P

I am a bit surprised Nicholls did not get into a NHL game...

thought the same. Looked good in TC, and in the camp scrimage. Surprised they didn't even give him a shot...... do have hopes for him though.

Girardi has no place on the PP. I get that you want RH shots out there, and that is important, but Strålman is magnitudes better and more comfortable at the point.

Girardi struggles to keep in the puck and is very easily pressured. Strålman is cool as a cucumber, and sure he coughs up the puck from time to time but the benefits heavily outweigh the drawbacks.

Youve quite clearly labeled a ton of guys as "NHL capable," which I agree is what depth is.

What I dont agree with is that guys like Mashinter, Lindberg, or Fast are NHL capable right now.

Boston has those hard working skill guys too in Campbell,Paille and Kelly. Campbell and Paille make Thornton look like an effective NHLer. The Wings had them in Draper and Maltby. McCarty became a key member of that line. The 2013 Hawks team took a page from the Wings book. Scotty is an advisor to his son. The 2010 Hawks team had more size with Ladd,Brouwer,Eager and Buff.

Fair.

The question is, do you agree that the Rangers DO have good depth? As I outlined previously, we have 16 forwards on our roster today (including Callahan and Hagelin - not including Lindberg, Fast, and Mash) that are NHL capable.

That says good depth to me. And I believe your first post that sparked this conversation was that the Rangers depth was not as good as I thought it was; but I believe it is is better than you think it is :)

I think the forward group, when healthy, does have plenty of guys that are capable of playing in the NHL.

Succeeding in the NHL is another matter entirely -- because a lot of those guys come littered with question marks.

Who is left in camp?

Off the top of my head?

MZA
Brassard
Pouliot
Pyatt
Boyle
Dorsett
Powe
Moore
Asham
Haley
Mashinter
Kantor
Miller
Fast
Lindberg
Hrivik
Kreider
Yogan
Stepan?

D's:
McDonagh
Girardi
MDZ
Staal
Stralman
Moore
McIlrath
Allen
Bickel
Johnson
Falk
Syvret

Depends on what Vigneault wants to do with his 3rd line -- my guess is hes going to want it to be a little more offensive oriented. I think roster spots will be hard to come by for guys like Pyatt, Asham, Powe, and yes - Haley.

If Haley can pk okay then I'd take him over all of Pyatt, Asham and Powe. He's younger, he's more physical and tougher than maybe even Asham. His skating is up there with Powe who is the best of the rest. Cheaper contract as well. Of the 4 Haley would be my first choice.

a 4th line of Haley-Moore-Dorsett would drive other teams bat****. I'm in favor of giving Haley a shot, he definitely deserves it over Pyatt.

It would drive me bat****. The Haley-Newbury-Dorsett line was an abortion. Don't think Moore is enough to save it.

You're right it was terrible but they existed almost solely to goon it up against Boston. Dorsett is a better player than he showed in that series, and Moore is just eons better than Newbury at the NHL level. It looked pretty good yesterday, lets see how they hold up in camp.
