The Hawks are the benchmark for the NHL. Hardworking skill guys who can skate. Their botton six were Kruger,Frolik,Saad,Stalberg, Bolland and Shaw. Top 6. Toews. Kane. Hossa. Sharp. Bickell. Handzus. Bolland and Frolik were traded for cap reasons. Stalberg left for a big contract in Nashville and fell out of favor with coach Q. The Rangers Swedes fit that mold. Kristo too. He was used in all situations at North Dakota. Does Pyatt fit that mold? His skating is painfully slow. Even Boyle. The other guys like Pouliot,Dorsett and Moore fit. Dorsett isn't a skill guy but he can skate, adds grit/an edge to a team which needs it and can play the game. Moore and Pouliot can skate. Pushing the pace with Pyatt in the lineup isn't pushing the pace. He had trouble keeping up with the Swedes in the Sunday scrimmage and in the game last night. Pyatt adds size but he never uses it. That's all he really adds.

I was VERY impressed with Michael Kantor's game. Very North South, hard-nosed, lots of energy. I was meh on the signing to begin with but he looks like he can easily have a future as a depth energy guy.

There are so many new guys that it was hard to follow everyone. Kantor caught my attention a few times too.

Agreed. I know you aren't the biggest fan of Zuccarello, but IMO he fits the mould very well and always gives his all.

I'm a bit iffy on Dorsett, if only because he takes way too many penalties. Avery took a lot, but drew more than he took. The same cannot be said of Dorsett.

I love the Hawks style too.

Many centers moved to wing. Their D have held on to the puck (ie absolute opposite of Torts hockey) for a long time, it started under the previous coach. They are smart with the puck but play with a lot of speed and takes the puck to the net.

I would rather have Haley in the line-up as a 4th liner than Pyatt as a 3rd/4th liner honestly. At least Haley skates well and throws his weight around.

I think the jury is still out on Dorsett. As a 4th liner I think he'll be great. Good energy guy, throws his body around. Also sticks up for his teammate. It was only preseason but it was nice to see him tell Hartnell that taking a run at his guys wasnt going to be tolerated. Very underrated shot as well, gets it off his stick in a hurry.

He is the ideal 4th line energy player really. He can PK, he has good speed, he will fight, he will create some chances. I just wish they had another 4th line winger like him.

I love everything he brings, except his tendency to wind up in the box. What good is PK skill when you are the one sitting out the 2? He took 2.5 penalties per 60 minutes of play in the playoffs.

I'm not sold on his contract either, $1.6M+/year for an RFA 4th liner?

Then again, I shouldn't expect the organization that gave Jared Boll $1.7M/year to negotiate a good contract...

Depends on what Vigneault wants to do with his 3rd line -- my guess is hes going to want it to be a little more offensive oriented. I think roster spots will be hard to come by for guys like Pyatt, Asham, Powe, and yes - Haley.

He is more than just a 4th liner though. He is more than capable of playing on the 3rd line. I think he will be good for ~20-25 points this year which is VERY good production for a 4th liner.

I am unsure on whether Boyle will be around once the season starts or when everyone is healthy.

I don't see why he wouldn't be. Theres plenty of players that should be on the chopping block before he is.

I think Boyle - Moore - Dorsett would be an excellent 4th line. Experienced guys who will recognize and accept their role.

Really? I don't think so.

Torres' P/60 the past three seasons: 2.045, 1.748, 1.643

Dorsett's P/60 the past three seasons: 1.689, 1.055, 0.968

Torres' Corsi Rel.: -0.8, +5.2, -10.5

Dorsett's Corsi Rel.: -2.0, -6.0, -7.5

I could continue further back but that would be unfair to Dorsett as the two preceeding seasons were his first two years in the league.

Torres has everything Dorsett has, plus an offensive punch. Torres scores about as much as Callahan 5v5.

Dorsett is such a unique player in the league because he does everything so well for a 4th liner. His chirping ranks among best in the league, good for 20 or so fights a year, is fast, has a wicked shot, top 10 in hits, PKer, he doesn't have any real weaknesses except sometimes he can go overboard. I'd go as far as to call him one of the best 4th liners in the league. I'm really glad we have him, even if he's "undersized" or "not imposing".

St. Croix, McIlrath, Mashinter, Yogan on ice with Cally and Hagelin. Suspect 1st four will be assigned to Hartford later #NYR

Yogan was good yesterday, but there the logjam at forward is too big.

McIlrath was never making it out of camp, but his disappointing showing may have bought him an early ticket to Hartford.

How old is Torres? How old is Dorsett? One is on the downside of his prime, one is just entering.

"Wicked" shot? He has shot at 6.5% over his career 5v5. Compare to Torres: 11.39%.

I get that he is fun to watch as he really gives his all out there, and he is a good 4th liner. But he is hardly a player you pay $2M as an UFA. At least I wouldn't.

If he didn't take so many penalties and had a cheaper contract I would have no issue with him at all. But if I had to choose between him and Boyle the choice is very easy: Boyle.

Just comparing how much they earn in their UFA years of their current contracts. The amount they earn in those years should only reflect their value in those particular years.

Torres is currently the significantly more valuable player.

Agreed with the bolded statement, I just wish they were going to keep him around more, keep him around the NHL, the NHL coaches, and the NHL team. McIlrath is going (hopefully) to be a big part of this team's future. I don't think he's ever played more than one preseason game with the big boys in his entire NYR tenure.

I actually loved Mash's fight with Jansen, too. What a beast having to tell Jansen to take the bucket off. You're the man, Mash. But Mash is a guy who is a victim of the depth the Rangers have.

So. Much. Depth.

Torres has a big X on him. He can't get away with any hit. The NHL keeps suspending him and he never learns. Dorsett is under and cheaper. Someday the NHL is going to come down hard on Torres but they will let him concuss a few more players.

You've hit upon my pet peeve when it comes to the word depth and how it gets thrown around.

Are McIlrath and Mashinter really depth? These 2 guys don't look like they'd contribute at the NHL level in any meaningful way right now. How is that depth?
